The hooks I prefer to use most when tying these streamer flies are a (size 6-8) JAY STOCKARD brand “J2 Hooks” 2x Long Nymph / Streamer hook!
The Jay Stockard J2 Hooks are extremely sharp, strong enough if you do hook a big Walleye or other fish, and they are very affordable about $18 / 100 hooks! If you care about having a quality super sharp hook I really do recommend these hooks! I am not sponsored by Jay Stockhard but they do sell awesome hooks and fly tying components and accessories……..

At the time I filmed this video I was using size 4 or 6 Aberdeen or Plain Shank Mustad or Eagle Claw hooks. Those hooks work fine and they’re very affordable , but you may have to take a hook file to some of them to make them sharper. The Jay Stockard hooks I mentioned above are my new favorite hooks for tying these flies!

I've caught countless Steelhead on orange, pink and purple caribou streamers with royal blue flashibou . Best single streamer that I ever used. I even learned to approxate eyes with the blue flashibou just behind the head. I suppose that you could tie them from bucktail for walleye
Thanks for the info, I’ll have to try to get my hands on some caribou hair and see if it fishes differently than standard buck tail. Walleyes definitely love anything orange, pink, or purple , so I’ll probably tie up a few in those colors and give them a try. Purple, red, and green flies have produced best for me so far when it comes to Whitebass and Walleyes, but they go on some wacky color combos sometimes. I'm a beginner fly tie , thank you for your video; your demonstration of fly tie is very detail and I like the way you tie. Last year I try to tie some of them and went up north dakota the red fly seem more effective. This year I may tie some more the way you tie.

This definitely wins video of thr year for me. For weeks on end now ive been tying streamers. So many different combos and options i dont see why a well stocked box of flies cant out fish a gulp or crankbait. In fact i think it can be done its just no one has taken the time to try to outfish the competitors who run lures only.
There are definitely times streamers outfish gulp, crankbaits, plastics etc. I always bring a couple different rods to see what’s getting hit the most. But I’ve found a lot of the time walleyes and whitebass prefer the streamers over anything else.
Just moved to North Dakota right on the Missouri River, we have skinny water and deep channel in the river.
Heading over to ther tying room cant wait to try this in the spring. I have a bunch of size 4 bonefish hooks left over.
So best suggestion is keep it sparse... I like that.
Any Suggestions on the use of Craft fur, I have a ton of it for Bonefish patterns?
Great video, I'll be tying a few dozens of these.
I am actually considering switching over to Craft Fur because a few buddies of mine use it and love it, and the price of Bucktail is going through the roof. They get as many bites as I do on their craft fur flies. There’s a wide variety of colors to choose from, and the flies have a wispy and free flowing action to them in the water.
Hopefully you get chomped on your streamer flies, I heard the Missouri River is prime Walleye water so I’m sure the streamer fly/ 3 Way Rig technique will definitely work out there. Haven’t found a walleye river where it hasn’t worked as long as you have 5+ feet of water to work with in front you.

I used to buy a lot of my materials from a small shop in Milwaukee called Reinkes, but they are closed now. I found some decent deals on Amazon though, I put the links to them in the description. Hope that helps!
How much wood a steramer fly cost
They average about $3.50-$4 a fly, sometimes $5-$6 for 2 flies. I used to make and sell them myself but it’s too time consuming, and the price of materials going up doesn’t leave much wiggle room for profits. But the bait shops usually sell them for the prices mentioned above. I just find it cheaper and easier to make them on my own, I can make the colors I like, and it passes the time during the winter months sitting in front of the TV tying flies. They’re so easy and so much more affordable to make them yourself, I don’t know why more guys don’t tie the flies themselves.
To bad your chest cam wasn't on.
The chest cam footage didn’t turn out as good as I wanted it to, so I just ended up not even using the footage. Next time I may set up 2 cameras on separate tripods.

Learn to whip finish. You can use a tool, but a tool isn’t necessary.
I’ve just been doing the overhand knot type finish my whole life cause it’s easy for me. But I do want to learn how to use one of those whip finish tools I see the fly tying experts use. I bought a little kit with some tying tools so it may help make things easier. But now my tying vice took a crap on me, so I have to buy a new one. A good vice is pretty pricy, and spending $100 on a vice that crapped out in a years time of use sucks. But I love making my own flies and jigs so much I don’t mind spending a little more to get something good. Thanks for watching the video and hope you enjoy the video content! Good luck fishing 🎣!
