It's really great the food industry offers a wide selection of foods. Snickers now sells a bar with a brownie inside the bar. Also reeses sells a cup with pretzel inside.

Bagels - YES! They have been my go-to lunch for over 40 years! Chicken spread or a slice of Spam, or pepperoni are worthy filling, too. In town I buy one for each lunch, slice them, mash them flat, and bag them in a Ziploc, pressing out the air. Great midday calories! I eat nuts instead of candy during the day because I'm a type 2 diabetic (but I have been known to sneak in some dark chocolate M&Ms 🙄).
You killed the miles last year. Looking forward to your 2021 hike 👍

Just a thought to the extent useful- I'd suggest sticking the belt pouch in your foodbag at the end of the day or keeping a plastic bag in it as a liner. I've hiked with people on 2 different occasions that had mice eat into their snack pouch on their backpacks at night. (One left food it, the other just had residual odor in it).

My thruhike was in 98. I tried resupply by post office. The issue I had as did others was PO was not always open. In other words you had to adjust your hike at times to make it work. I went to the PO this week to mail a small package- less than 6 oz. for 200 miles. The lowest rate was about 8 dollars. Had that been food enough for a resupply it would have been 20.00 at least.. The PO in the trail towns were great Also outfitters, hostels and motels were great for holding items.. I found shipping to places other than the PO is usually the better choice because they are open most of the time. Good luck!

go to your local gas station, checkout the "jack link's selections' of jerky meats. beef, bison, venison, chicken, salmon. go good as addition to the ramen soup packs. been toying with reducing the weight on those mac & cheese cups. have found the amount of water is 1/2 cup. another company makes powdered egg. like 2 tblsp = 1 egg. i general use this for when i am cooking for myself an arecipe for 4 calls for 2 eggs. so i can add 1/2 or 1/4 of a egg to the reduce size reciepe.

I like everything you mentioned, except the bagels. Too bulky to carry, and too dry to eat -- especially with peanut butter on them. The last time I brought them on a trip I found myself literally having to choke down the bread/PB combo. I prefer tortillas. I also use a Jetboil, which isn't too heavy and basically allows you to pack everything inside the pot, including the fuel canister. For lunches, I have run across a meal replacement bar called Protein Puck, which is really pretty tasty and packs a ton of calories and protein.

I could never be a thru hiker because I just can't stand the thought of eating a Ramen-bomb. Hate instant mashed potatoes and not too fond of Ramen, either. I like the Oriental brands of Kimchi flavored Ramen. If I ever attempt a thru hike I'm thinking after hiker hunger hits I would probably eat just about anything. Only time I would even try it and I'd probably ask someone if I could taste theirs first. You like hot sauce, you should try the kimchi noodles. Look in the Oriental food section for the best ones (other companies make it but it's not as good). That with the potatoes would probably be better tasting.
