    Lou at sincere is devastating. Especially with Gunnie who has bee n one of his wildest characters. Always love Lou and Brennan working together ❤

      It wasn't until Starstruck that I realized how much Lou inhabits his characters. I kept thinking I knew what he really sounded like, but if you go back and listen, it's not just his killer commitment to sincerity in scenes like this. His "out of character" voice is never the same between series. His rhythm, his tone - the amount he stutters and how, for Gunnie - it all changes depending on who he's playing. That level of commitment is crazy to me - can any of us change whether we pause and how, whether we say "uh" , etc when we're not even thinking about it?
      I used to think Emily was the tear jerker of the group (and she's still amazing). But Lou and Brennan's hardcore commitment to being vulnerable has wrung an ocean of tears from me by this point.

      @@edwardnewtonLA This is a brilliant comment. I think I clocked it as soon I started re-listening to Unsleeping City episodes the first time. It's still my favourite series (both seasons) with Starstruck now as a very close second. Lou plays his characters straight and let the comedy come out of their choices. And I think Brennan as his long time comedy partner loves it because he has always taken his character lead from "Yes and-ing" the dice roll or the other players. I love Emily as a player slightly more than I do as actress. She is brilliant at knowing what will be surprisingly funny or deeply moving, but I never ever not see her as Emily playing a character. I'm sad that I slept on Siobhan for so long. I never really clicked with Adaine and it took me until the fae court to realise how much complexity she brings to her characters with a writer's oversight. Each of them are strong and bring out a strength in Brennan which doesn't always come out when he dms other people.
      Lou and Brennan - the Kings of that one damn scene each season! 😭

    Lou has come a long way in roleplay. I always noticed that he looked down in dramatic scenes a lot rather than making eye contact, and sometimes in earlier seasons he would almost smirk a little bit even when the scene was sad. Like his voice would sound in character, but his face not entirely (mostly as Fabian and a few times as Amethar but only in serious moments). But this, man. Eye contact. Totally fucking genuine. Eyes glistening but no tears falling. This man can IMPROVE. And I’m not just talking about Gunnie 😉 He’s easily moved from my least favorite of the players (though I loved them all) to probably my second or third.

      @GreyAcumen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I think some of this, seeing as how he's a comedic actor in an indie podcast series that already tanked once and had to rebuild from the scraps, may stem from this particular scene being a bit closer to home for him than most of his others.

    • @debran940
      @debran940 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      He's actually talked about it in an adventuring party episode about how he had trouble with dramatic scenes in the early seasons of d20 (specifically about smiling during the family in flames episode) because he was too awkward to show emotion on camera.

    Reminded me so much of Brennan as Ostentatia's dad with that "I can take care you" moment from the first ep of the seven, something about hearing the tears in someone's voice as they say something that almost sounds like they're trying convince themselves more than the person they're talking to always gets me 😭

    My favourite part of this scene is Gunnie's assertion that the Wurst is where he's supposed to be and the final "I was right", but it's also definitely worth highlighting the way that "Ball's up - It's never coming down." so perfectly leverages the silly running joke into a genuinely great emotional payoff.

  • @Justpastawesome
    @Justpastawesome 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Amazing. I have no insight into the lives of the Dimension 20 gang, so it's fully possible that this scene is just excellent acting and immersive roleplaying, and not in any way a reflection of their real experiences. That being said, I do feel like this speech has a lot of parallells to pursuing a career in art. So many people warn you not to do it, and when things aren't working out it can be humiliating and infuriating to feel like you're proving them right.
    Lou always seems so genuinely happy making stories with Dimension 20, so even if it's just an accidental parable I'm drawing it's heartwarming to see his character affirm that he's content with the life he's chosen and the people he chose to journey with, all whilst looking forward to a future where new and exciting things may happen.

    I have no context for this scene, but this was outstanding roleplaying. As a D&D player from the 80s and 90s who was bullied for liking "nerdy" stuff, I'm so glad that the Internet has opened up role playing games to so many people who may have never had a chance to play before, and made it so accessible. Now tabletop RPGs are more popular than ever, and that makes me happy.

    It was real acting. This is why I love this show. These people. They include parts of their personal lives in their roles. Not to assume thing about the actors/players, but some examples are ally’s season 1 religious arcs and siobhan’s panic attack roles, Pete’s sobriety, kugrash’s atonement, kingston’s love for his family, and of course, Gunnie’s struggle with weather his carrier descision was right or not… Again, not to assume things about the character players, but it seems a little too close to not acting to be role play hahaha.p
