At the beginning he says we're backstage with him, but he's clearly in front of the stage. If he's not honest about that, then why should we believe he's honest about the gear?
Wow...very modern set-up..Chris is the first guy I've seen (on a gear tour) to show you his signal chain via laptop..I want that Fractal Axe-Fx unit...sick-
For touring, the Fractals make so much sense. In the studio, my amps are king. But the cost of traveling with heavy tube amps (worrying about tube failures) just doesn't make sense anymore. One Fractal with a line out to the PA and in ear monitors is really all you need. The amp models are pretty good (fine for megadeth tones), the effects are truly amazing. Adding a power amp & cabs onstage is easy. I think he's smart to use this rig.
Guitar>wireless>Fractal (aka "fancy POD")>stereo out to power amps>tap cabinet sim out to in-ear headphone mix, edit/control the Fractal patches with a laptop. I don't see anything overly complicated here. I do a similar setup with a POD Pro, TC Electronic G-System, stereo power amp and a MacBook Pro. The Fractal is like having a POD and G-System all-in-one, so his setup is actually less complex than mine.
@KG739 hes not running an amp head. Hes running marshall power amps. His amp tone and sound is coming from the axe fx out through the fx loop into the marshall power amp. All the marshall power amp does is give him sound through his cabinets on stage.
@Dreamscapevirus actually the reason mustaine used a line 6 amp was because he couldn't get the marshall amp he wanted to use from america to the uk for recording because it was a buddy of his, so he had a line 6 modded after that amp to use. He's always used marshall or marshall-esque amps/clones... except for RIP I'm pretty sure he used Bogner/VHT.
Vox wah, Mayer Fuzzface & Octavia. Not to mention studio fx like phase shifting & backward effects. Hendrix did indeed use equipment to create different sonic textures. Btw, ZeProfezional, why is it, do you think, that SO many guitarists from SO many genres cite Hendrix as a major influence?
The Energyball model is a model of an ENGL Powerball (or is it the Fireball...I dont feel like looking it up) so he is still using ENGL in his tone...in a way.
@Gabriopunk77 I thinkI've read that Mustaine forbids him from using anything but Marshall on stage, so the only way he can get the Engl sound since there is no Engl head for him to use is to use a amp simulation on the Axe-FX.
@metalrhoads man idk what video you were watching, but this is honestly the most simple setup ive ever seen in a guitarworld video hes got a power amp and some computer controlled fx thing (not sure what its called) which is basically your eq and those pedals all in one simpler machine.
Chris seems like a nice guy & he's one hell of a guitar player. Mustaine is lucky to have him. His rig is cool cause it saves a ton in shipping costs. Overseas, he can rent Marshall 1960 cabs & not have to worry about hauling them overseas. I have the Fractal & the effects must be heard to be believed, I couldn't find a pre amp tone that I liked. Cleans are good & super high gain is good. But the subtle in between amps models left me cold. I keep it in my studio.
@momay69 yeah totally, he "was against 7 string solos on the new album", as per an interview I read...so yeah he's been touring with 6-strings for a bit now. Wouldnt be surprised if he still rips up a few on his 7-string once in a while.
@momay69 He stated in a recent interview its more 6 string he doesnt play very much of except when he has to. Offstage he still plays 7 string all the time because his backstage/hotel guitars are 7 strings cause hes a 7 string kinda guy... he didnt specify that in this interview though.
@Pallietime he still does, its jst that dave doesnt like him using them in megadeth because he wants to preserve the "megadeth tone". it was in an interview, cant remember whivh one though.
@Gabriopunk77 Personally I use both. I play with Peavey amps which only have digital effects on the new models. But I do also use my line 6 which primarily use analog based distortions along with some pedals here and there. I like the sound of both. Its not the sound that matters its the sound that you want that matters and who is trying to get that sound.
i agree that you can get much more versatility with modern things like this Axe FX but i just think that the sound of a tube amp cannot be reproduced with digital technology. i mean, yes, you can get a thousand different tones with digital simulators, but i'd just rather have one amazing tone than bunch of not so amazing ones.
@MenaPaws21 I didn't realize they did a gear tour with him recently, I'm sure they've obviously done some pretty good gear tours before, just as of late it's been crap like DevilDriver and such, not so much up with guitarists of the calibur of Broderick and the like.
@TheSweatyfatguy I doubt he uses it at all so I can't imagine he'd have bothered changing it, probably just whatever stock pick up they put in the s series anyway.
I think It's great he has all that equipment and knows how to use it to enhance, and simplify things. Thats really great. Im still trying to learn what little stuff I have, lol.
@Yodan702 chris does use ENGL amps...but mustaine forbids him to use any other amp except for the Marshalls because all of the Megadeth tone zeroes down on the Marshall heads....so chris never uses marshalls in studio with megadeth and live too...
@ConspireToConspire I agree, a very simple setup. I was surprised to see no reverb or delay (maybe he will have that in a solo patch he didn't show). The two guitars were shocking yeah, I can see playing an entire show with one guitar (I do the same), but what if your backup fails? Then you're boned..
@augusrockhouse23 Dave has mentioned in a gear chat with premier guitar as to why this is. He said he was more suited for rhythm guitar especially as he has the extra job of doing vocals, so it was more natural for him to bring in an accompaniment lead guitar player
@dante1amber1 The truth is, he could've shown you a stack of any given tube amp and said, "Here's my gear", and you would have believed him. The way technology is developing is absolutely great for guitarists. I own a Bogner XTC 101b and I would never discard it, but I can't see playing live with it anymore. No one knows the difference.
Every musician has different sensibilities and the equipment he/she chooses are just tools to serve whatever he is trying to produce musically before an audience or in the studio. Broderick's rig might be complicated from a programming standpoint, but really, it's actually pretty efficient to do it the way he is. If you feel that Fractals are too fakey sounding or something, that's a legitimate criticism, but he's gotta do what he feels is best for the situation he is presently in.
@llksk8metal92 Instrumentals don't mean acoustic. Dialectic Chaos and Into the lungs of hell are instrumentals. They only use instruments and no vocals. I think that Megadeth could make a very good metal instrumental album.
@kingfullmetal cool, im goin to the one in long beach, my third concert first was dream theater, second was dream theater, scale the summit, big elf, zappa plays zappa, and steve vai (same show) progressive nation...
@Tangakkai Why is not using a macbook weird? Using a macbook for this type of thing would be a bad idea due to it's lack of program support for a lot of software these guys use.
Wow, a gear tour that was actually really interesting and not just "here is my nice guitars and amps". The only other gear tour I was interested in was steve vai's
@hoang1428 ive been playin a ibanez RG7 for a long time. they make great guitars. been thinking lately of getting a dean RC7. i dunno though, still havent gotten my hands on an RC7 and im not buying before playin :P
@XxSconeManxX They did a gear tour with Richie Kotzen not long ago; he's an excellent guitar player! Altough I hate all the Atreyu and stuff gear tours..
I always wondered what artists like Chris do with their former guitar brands when they go to another company. I know this Ibanez wasn't a signature though. Like say John Petrucci went from Ibanez to Ernie Ball Music Man.
@superjesus117 Is it supposed to be the clone of the ENGL? His tone hasn't shifted too much since he changed to Fractals, and I saw him on Gigantour 2008 when he was still using Powerballs live.
@simpsons2170 if it sounds good whats the difference between using a laptop with a amp simulator and pluggin directly into an amp? that for me looks simpler becuase he doesnt have to use 100 pedals onstage, and theres no way hed be able to do the harmonizer with 1 pedal live.
@Gabriopunk77 I completely understand that. Its like playing acoustic clean and trying to make an acoustic sound. YOu will never get that deep beautiful tone out of it. I understand exactly waht your sayin.
@suihkubad i cant comment on that because i havent heard megadeth with broderick live, but he wouldnt be using it if he didnt like the tone. although the convenience of it could be a factor
I wish he and Dave had there Axe Fx Patches laying around somewhere on the internet.
He only has two guitars to play live?!?! O.O woow...that's some amazing stuff
Chris is such a big inspiration
A good example for great musicians being always nice guys. No strange behavior or attitudes, just down to earth guys.
thats a man w pure talent, alot of fast guitarists have played classical guitar like zakk,Chris of course and Randy Rhoads and countless others
+vapedude66 hell yeah
How many guys at his level do you know of that only have two guitars for the stage. One main, one backup, that's IT. Damn...
At the beginning he says we're backstage with him, but he's clearly in front of the stage. If he's not honest about that, then why should we believe he's honest about the gear?
ok
XD
Stagegate. We know guitar players lie. Look at EVH's bullshit.
He probs said that bcus the tour was in the backstage
love his fuckin' hair so much...
Wow...very modern set-up..Chris is the first guy I've seen (on a gear tour) to show you his signal chain via laptop..I want that Fractal Axe-Fx unit...sick-
his hair is so smooth
For touring, the Fractals make so much sense. In the studio, my amps are king. But the cost of traveling with heavy tube amps (worrying about tube failures) just doesn't make sense anymore. @GUITARRIFIED He is only using Marshall poweramps. His tone is the Fractal AXEFX now. They are amazing sounding units.
3:48 Guitar Pro 5 and Power Tab Editor !!!
Sweet, Broderick using the AxeFX too... you gotta respect the simplicity of his setup!!
@philipkors energyball is stated on the Fractal website as a powerball model. So he's using engl's tone from marshall's power amps.
@KG739 hes not running an amp head. Hes running marshall power amps. His amp tone and sound is coming from the axe fx out through the fx loop into the marshall power amp. All the marshall power amp does is give him sound through his cabinets on stage.

He's always used marshall or marshall-esque amps/clones... except for RIP I'm pretty sure he used Bogner/VHT.
I'm impressed...it's not as complicated as I thought it would be. I like it..simple and straight forward. Chris is a B3AST!
@TheColourLine Megadeth - Headcrusher. It's from their most recent album, 2009's Endgame.
"We're backstage here"
*Stands in front of stage*..
It was custom made for him while he was still with Ibanez, based on the RGA7.
@metalrhoads man idk what video you were watching, but this is honestly the most simple setup ive ever seen in a guitarworld video
hes got a power amp and some computer controlled fx thing (not sure what its called) which is basically your eq and those pedals all in one simpler machine.
@suihkubad indeed, nothing beats the feel and the sound of a propper tube amp
Chris seems like a nice guy & he's one hell of a guitar player. Mustaine is lucky to have him. His rig is cool cause it saves a ton in shipping costs. Overseas, he can rent Marshall 1960 cabs & not have to worry about hauling them overseas. I have the Fractal & the effects must be heard to be believed, I couldn't find a pre amp tone that I liked. @Aashish343 he did check the jackson chris broderick bloodline series or enter the jackson guitar homepage
cant wait to witness his tone live ...july 27th MegadetH !!!!!!!!!
@biten94 I'm not so sure anymore. I know he's endorsed by ESP now, and not Ibanez no more. It really is a beautiful guitar though!
@fedorap97 i know!!!
but the concert is in august, WHO CARES im gonna see them all live!!!
@momay69 yeah totally, he "was against 7 string solos on the new album", as per an interview I read...so yeah he's been touring with 6-strings for a bit now. Wouldnt be surprised if he still rips up a few on his 7-string once in a while.

@Pallietime he still does, its jst that dave doesnt like him using them in megadeth because he wants to preserve the "megadeth tone". it was in an interview, cant remember whivh one though.
@AFtheRocker Actually this is pretty lightweight overall. I'm shocked that he's using only two guitars on stage.
he's right about the d-activators... i've got a pair of d activator X's and they're extremely versatile pickups...
@biten94 Yes i knew he has his new jackson series guitar, but he he stills playing that guitar so i think he uses both!!
What a great guy, great insight, too.
I like how dave makes him use marshall power amps but he's using a Powerball Preamp clone in the Axe-Fx
@MyEverConstantSmile yeah dude its just seems like Chris needs his tech to make sure no bullsht goes down
i agree that you can get much more versatility with modern things like this Axe FX but i just think that the sound of a tube amp cannot be reproduced with digital technology. i mean, yes, you can get a thousand different tones with digital simulators, but i'd just rather have one amazing tone than bunch of not so amazing ones.
fred kowalo was zakk wylde's guitar tech. he was even in that film "Rock Star"
@TheEvilskum
Chris used ENGL on the first tour with Megadeth.
Broderick is one of the gnarliest guitarists out there.
@MenaPaws21
I didn't realize they did a gear tour with him recently, I'm sure they've obviously done some pretty good gear tours before, just as of late it's been crap like DevilDriver and such, not so much up with guitarists of the calibur of Broderick and the like.

Chris's best work is with Jag Panzer. He wrote amazing solos but it seems like he is limiting himself. Megadeth needs to do an instrumental album.
I love that RG Ibanez, if i had that guitat. my life would be complete!!
odes anyone know where can i buy that guitar?
@GUITARRIFIED
He still works with ENGL when not in Megadeth.
@augusrockhouse23 Dave has mentioned in a gear chat with premier guitar as to why this is. He said he was more suited for rhythm guitar especially as he has the extra job of doing vocals, so it was more natural for him to bring in an accompaniment lead guitar player
actually thats just chris' preferances. dave i believe just has the guitar and amp. who would you rather work for?
He doesn't need all these effects he's just sooo good that he bought all these to try and disprove that he is a god
WOOT. Chris Broderick uses Guitar Pro and Guitar Rig! :D
@momay69 they only released two pics of him holding it but you can only see the headstock. Dammit!
anyone hear what happened with his pick-clip thing? he said awhile back that he wanted to mass produce and sell them, but i havent heard anything
Every musician has different sensibilities and the equipment he/she chooses are just tools to serve whatever he is trying to produce musically before an audience or in the studio. Broderick's rig might be complicated from a programming standpoint, but really, it's actually pretty efficient to do it the way he is. @kingfullmetal cool, im goin to the one in long beach, my third concert
first was dream theater, second was dream theater, scale the summit, big elf, zappa plays zappa, and steve vai (same show) progressive nation...
Finally a guitarist who knows what's in his rig. That's a real guitarist.
@Aashish343 Did you hear He switched to Jackson and got his own Signature model?
@9kjamal9k theres a vid that shows james' rig and guitarworld has a vid that shows their entire studio
@AFtheRocker Because you dont do huge tours around the world, neither do I. I dont even have an amp atm and ive been playing for a few years.
@djg0603
He's still with Dean. =(
His V's and Zero's have new finishes, and the Zero is available with a pickguard now.
The tech shows up in the movie Rock Star.
@hoang1428 ive been playin a ibanez RG7 for a long time. they make great guitars. been thinking lately of getting a dean RC7. i dunno though, still havent gotten my hands on an RC7 and im not buying before playin :P
Is it possible that i get one model like that one white ibanez....it is so fucking perfect
@XxSconeManxX They did a gear tour with Richie Kotzen not long ago; he's an excellent guitar player! Altough I hate all the Atreyu and stuff gear tours..
Not so private now it's on youtube :P
I want that RGA. hope ibanez releases one in that color
@kingv911 They do actually have a custom shop??Last time i checked their site i couldn't find it...Anyway thanks for the info
@Aashish343 he has now, he has a signature jackson
Interesting. And having a guy do your pedal changes for you would be SWEET!
when Chris speaks to his guitar tuner suddenly the drum noises...chris is like no one fucking interrupts me..
@Aashish343 I would totally buy a chris broderick signature guitar, Agree??
@kingfullmetal yea, in long beach
are you going?
I always wondered what artists like Chris do with their former guitar brands when they go to another company. I know this Ibanez wasn't a signature though. Like say John Petrucci went from Ibanez to Ernie Ball Music Man.
@Aashish343 chris made his own signature jackson guitar just type it down on google
@superjesus117
Is it supposed to be the clone of the ENGL? His tone hasn't shifted too much since he changed to Fractals, and I saw him on Gigantour 2008 when he was still using Powerballs live.
u guys noticed every single musician on earth r awesome people and funny people
He NEEDS to make a solo album!
@simpsons2170 if it sounds good whats the difference between using a laptop with a amp simulator and pluggin directly into an amp? that for me looks simpler becuase he doesnt have to use 100 pedals onstage, and theres no way hed be able to do the harmonizer with 1 pedal live.
@Emceetem I'm new to Megadeth but do you know if he uses different tunings cos it doesnt seem like it with two guitars.
I love Megadeth, but Chris is capable of so much more
MUST BUY EVERYTHING CHRIS BRODERICK HAS
@Gabriopunk77 I completely understand that. Its like playing acoustic clean and trying to make an acoustic sound. YOu will never get that deep beautiful tone out of it. I understand exactly waht your sayin.
the simpliest gear setup for touring and playing live!
@Sotos7Xania Ibanez Custom Shop! Yeah that guitar is beautiful.
@suihkubad i cant comment on that because i havent heard megadeth with broderick live, but he wouldnt be using it if he didnt like the tone. although the convenience of it could be a factor
I have a X2 i got with my line 6 hd flextone 2 it was deftones old head and gear :) its sick!!
@zetanbow16 he was sayin that chris should be doin even more stuff in megadeth
kirks setup is an amp, a wah pedal and a guitar
im gonna see em live!!!
with slayer and testament!!!!!!
