  • May 12, 2021 we went down the Shafer Trail on motorcycles. This is the full length video of the switchback portion. After this part, we rode Potash Rd into Moab.
I am not an expert rider at all and the pucker factor was high which you can probably tell from this video. Basically just left it in 1st gear and engine braked all the way down.

Great scenery, quite different to where I ride here in Australia. My 2nd bike is a VStrom, an underrated bike, quite versatile. A 2 wheeled SUV that will take you plenty of places with care

Thanks, I’m thinking of doing the same next year. This video gives me an overview of how it looks. But, is your windscreen vibrating a lot here? Are the trails that bad?

The trails were fine. I put a large aftermarket windscreen on my V-Strom and my front suspension was definitely showing its age. My 2 friends on KLRs had no vibration problems.

@@thedriftlessrider I see. How do you feel about taking your VStrom off the pavement? I’m still torn between VStrom 650 and DR for my next bike and weight seem to be my only concern while traveling alone, but can’t beat VStrom comfort wise for kings distance traveling. What do you say?

The V-Strom has been a fantastic adventure touring motorcycle. It's very comfortable on road with 6th gear and good power. Off road it can so most of what you'd want to do. My friends with KLRs definitely could the trails faster but I was able to keep up for the most part. I would recommend a good skid plate and crash bars at minimum if you plan on off roading the V-Strom. The oil filter and exhaust pipe are the lowest pieces on the engine and I scraped the skid plate a few times on the road from Shafer trail to Moab. You can get into a good off-road stance on the bike standing if you're six foot tall or less. Maneuvering wasn't too much of a problem with the weight. I downed the bike three times this year (2 sand, 1 mud incident) I was able to pick the bike back up myself. Those aluminum boxes on the back helped keep the bike from going completely flat on side though.
