Ithaca (Ithaki, Ithaka (Ιθάκη) is a Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, off the northeast coast of Kefalonia and to the west of mainland Greece. Explore Ithaca Greece with us!
Vathy (Βαθύ) or Vathi is the largest settlement on the Greek Ionian island of Ithaca. Vathy is located in the southern part of Ithaca, in a deep natural harbour. The approach to Vathy by sea is truly an experience. Vathy is the capital and the main harbour of Ithaca since the 16th century. Vathy was devastated by the 1953 Ionian earthquake which left only a few buildings standing. Gradually, the buildings were rebuilt in the original Venetian style. Vathy is considered a traditional preservable settlement and in 1978 a law was passed to protect it. Vathy is the most developed tourist area of Ithaca with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Vathy has many hotels and apartments to rent and you can even hire a car if you wish to explore Ithaca. The local bus service has routes that connect Vathy with the villages of Northern Ithaca.
Being the capital of Ithaca, Vathy is the administrative, cultural and commercial centre of the island.
