There was a woman who walked into the bathroom with a journalist, Katy Tur, getting ready to go into the lion's den with one of the many Trump rally's back in 2016. The woman was a hair dresser. She asked to help Tur if Tur wanted help. The start to talk. No hecking. No curse words. They were comfortable talking with the other. When they went out into the arena, it changed. The woman turned into a vituperative, nasty person. She was yelling mild words like "F**k You!". There were nastier words, too. After the rally was over, she found Tur and asked for a photo. She was bubbling over and hoped Tur would come to more rallys for all of the great times. She was separated with the rally vs. her normal life in her own mind. Tragic and very, very dangerous.

This isn't so bad. There are nasty members of congress who are apparently real sweethearts and surprisingly intelligent, but when they're on the floor, they play to the voters. Lindsay Graham has a lot of Dem friends because he's like that, and that means he's capable of doing meaningful work, including finding compromises with his political opponents, behind the scenes, where it often matters. A lot of Dem senators respect him. There just haven't been many opportunities lately where it's been politically advantageous for him to work across the aisle. Republicans are all kinda stuck right now, and it's not because they have two faces. They're just cursed with the most vile leadership they've ever had. And I agree about "vituperative".

NEEDS four guards? I don't think you listened very well, unless there's some back story I'm missing. It's interesting from Jordan himself also that he seemed to lead into the story like we'd understand once he told it, but there was no explanation of any danger or reason for security at all. It's also pretty sad that the entire point behind his story is that when we HUMANIZE each other rather than DEMONIZE, we remember that we're all human, and actually want a lot of the same things. Bravo for taking the traditional bait and bashing MAGA though. I bet you learned a lot from losing this election too.

It's when news agencies were looking for the perfect sound bites that started people looking for those in their daily conversations, and then we got the tech to make it so that _anyone_ can capture those sound bits that made it so that every conversation was fishing for those 'gotcha' moments to 'prove' the other side was full of it.

I don’t think you’ll ever be able to get through to the extreme ones, but the moderate ones who support some of his policies but are unsure of who he is as a person may be more open to discussion. Learn about who they are and their circumstances, why they support his policies or feel that he is the only one who can help them. The events that led to where we are now go back well before Trump announced his candidacy in 2015.
I’ve long suspected that it isn’t so much Trump the man who they support but what he’s saying. He tells his supporters everything they want to hear. Meaning that, if someone else were to come along who said all the same things Trump is saying and more of it, and louder, they’d probably ditch Trump and follow that guy instead.

My boss legit believes that Trump is going to drastically reduce government bureaucracy. When I point out that he had a chance and spent that chance on a bunch of incompetent people who ended up fired or in prison, the compromise we could come to was that on that particular issue, no one in government is likely to do anything about it. But then why vote for the guy of he's not actually going to do the things he said he'd do that you wanted done?

That was a truly lovely, inspiring, encouraging, optimistic, hopeful tale of genuine human interaction without fear oranamocity - and right before the American experiment in democracy ends. It should be a Hallmark channel movie.
Imagine, two men on opposit political vectors, trapped in the same empty airport, with no one to distract them from the small-town blizzard but their nemesis. And that's when they find love was right in front of them...

Some of my favorite , (and yes even very smart) family and friends are that suit-man. We talk to them, and interact with them less-the less they try to meet us in the middle. But i miss them. I look forward to when this isnt such a hellscape...

i had a similar kind of experience. I was going to our local news chat areas and there were obviously the expected mis of personalities. But over time i sort of connect with one of them a little and he offered to teach me how to make pizza since he worked in a pizzaria during his college years. we had a great time for hours that day with a lot of similar interests and opinions but the very next day he was back to sh!tposting at me in th chat rooms as soon as he hooked up with his MAGA friends.

Treat every human like a human.. nothing more or nothing less.. don’t try to extract anything out of it or manipulate anything.. And that’s a fair treatment & it goes a long way !!

There's always an opportunity for a connection whenever you can have a conversation with an actual human and not an actor playing a role. It's just that I've had bad experiences trying to reach the human behind the facade and all I get is bad faith and it's really, really, tiresome. It helps when the alienating and dehumanizing social media structures are removed from between us, for sure, but a live human interraction is still not any guarantee.
