I just had an idea. So what if Shanks is secretly a King or some high prince from the land of MarieJois and from a young age he was trained to infiltrate the pirates and complete missions for the Nobles of Mariejois. Hear me out though. We know nothing of shanks past. Sure, we know that he was on Roger's ship from a young age but how young and what were the circumstances behind getting on the ship? And maybe his initial mission was just to keep a look out for the Gomu Gomu no Mi and bring it back to the motherland if he gets the chance. What we've learned so far is that Shanks is in contact with the elders of the marines. They meet in secret for some unknown reason as far as I know nothing has been said about the backstory of this. I remember there being a report about Shanks and Kaido fighting at some point in time, but if Kaido is working with the government (at least enough that he has CP-0 in his fortress) and Shanks is too... I wonder what really happened. Maybe it was more an exchange of information? But honestly it's also the fact that he had the Gomu Gomu no Mi in is possession. It was told that Shanks stole the fruit from a Navy ship. Now I don't know how much time passed... If they stole the fruit the night before Luffy ate the fruit in the morning then alright sure, maybe Shanks just didn't have the time to choose who gets the fruit or anything like that. But if he had it for weeks or months after that... What was he holding it for? If he is some high prince then maybe he knows the legends surrounding the power of the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Tbh everyone wants to make Shanks this cool great mentor guy but there's barely any backstory on him.
