Every once in a while I take a trip from The Netherlands to Germany to buy... Kodak Gold. My last trip was 3 weeks ago and it was widely available but when i check out the availability on the website it looks like not a single store in Germany has any Gold stock? Do you think it's coming back? I am a bit scared that DM will stop having this 3pack and film in general in their assortment and that would sadden me for real. Or, at least for these great prices. I know there was a worldwide price increase and 10 euro a pack is still a steal of a deal but.. it was only 7,50 last year so seeing the availability in red everywhere makes me... a bit nervous to be honest.
The film is guaranteed to come back! Kodak does not permanently produce a film stock but rather one after the other. Now only the current batch is bought up and you have to wait until the next one is sent to germany again. As for price stability, it can be difficult. Rossmann has drastically increased its prices the same can happen in the DM. So when gold is available again grab as many as you can. 😄
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I really hope they restock. As of right now they took out the gold from their website. As said, i really hope they continue to carry gold for a kind price :)

Currently in Germany for at least the next month and a half. Looks like I’m about to hit up the nearest drug store and load up on film. I have a roll of Gold 200 I’m waiting on development. I’m super excited now.
I have a couple questions. Did you meter these shots at 100 iso? Did you develop or a lab? Not a question, but can’t wait to see your editing process for these.
Hi Antnie. Based on the images I would say they were exposed at EI100. Also, I would err towards over exposing by one stop and developing at box speed 200.
Hey Antnie, aristo was right. meteres für ISO 200 and exposed for the shadows. Its just to make shure that all the shadows have detail. Lab developed nothing fancy. the rest i will explain in the tutorials.
Pretty sure the first roll of film I ever shot that I remember shooting was Kodak gold... In a lomography camera. It was alright but I never thought too much about it. If I had seen this video 6 years ago. Well.
That your first roll was kodak gold is pretty cool.😮 no one in my family was into photography when i was a kid. The only camera i can remember that has film was a mickey mouse camera i got from mcdonals. 😆
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I have no ideas either. I'm assuming more photographers are into film photography in the U.S., so they can't restock fast enough and drive up the cost. Can't get Kodak Gold 200 and Portra 400 anywhere. Amazon sells 3 rolls of Kodak Gold 200 for $42, which is insane.
I also had my issues with the film at first but giving the film another chance was kind of a game changer and I'm not ashamed to say that I rather shoot some Gold or Ultramax instead of Portra. 😂

I used to be $2-$3 per roll in the US but not anymore... I would like to shoot Colorplus instead because it's very similar but without the warm cast which is not ideal for indoor or shaded photos for my taste. I prefer C200 more and actually I never got any of the muddy browns or weird color shift in the shadows. I shot +1/3 to +1 EV using exposure comp on my Olympic OM2n and sent it to a legendary film lab in southern US. I couldn't believe how much better my C200 scans looked than more than half of the samples I saw before shooting it. Either they exposed incorrectly or their lab doesn't handle it as well. These scans are BEAUTIFUL. It doesn't even look like a cheap film
Yes for interiors and plants I would imemr reach for colorplus. There the yellow tone of gold is disturbing. I have really photographed a lot of C200. I just don't buy it anymore because the price is also higher than gold. 😄 I agree with you c200 looks fantastic.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel c200 is more expensive here now than before but it's still not too bad. Its $4-$5. It used to be like a dollar less when I started shooting it. Drug stores here are ridiculous though. Someone wanted $29.99 for a 3 pack of Fuji color 200, $19.99 for one roll of superia 400, $39.99 for the 3 pack of Fuji 400, And $25.99 did a disposable camera! 😱
Is nice return to film, is great because one is in the obligation to send to develop the film for see the photo that's important because in digital era a photo stored in cellphone or memory card is useless unless is sent to print it and sometimes digital image sensors aren't enough for get a higher dynamic range . I will test sooner with a Ektachrome film.
oh damn vladimir, i would never buy kodak gold for this price. you can get the look well with any other color negative film. just buy what is well available and "cheap". 😀
Looks great! How much of that is processing? I always see great Portra photos for example, but every time I try Portra 400 it looks pretty bad, but if it comes down to editing then I suppose any of them would look good
oh hey, i think with any film it's always the post processing that determines the end result. to me, films are just raw material that you can edit the way you want. That means also a portra can look "bad" or gold can look like portra. First of all, the exposure of the film must be correct. Under-exposure rarely looks good. then it also depends on how you scan the images. there you really only have to get the white balance and brightness right. if you get portra scans from the lab and they don't look good, i would change labs. Otherwise I will make a detailed tutorial in the future how to get good results. 😀
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Thanks! I’ve been struggling a bit philosophically with film tones etc haha, it feels like you might as well just use one stock with decent dynamic range and tweak it like digital
@@slothsarecool from the philosophy i say i do not touch the colors only WB and tones. so the original character remains. I don't do anything with the film that a lab couldn't do. I recently got some Kodak gold and I'm excited to use them! They use to be $3 a pack a couple years ago here in the US but now they're around $6 lol.
oh double the price. thats unfortunate. 😅 have fun with you Gold and thanks for the comment!
i bought one today for 10...
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel oh, ja Rossmann ist soweit ich weiß hoch auf 16,95€. Makes me so sad!
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I really hope they restock. As of right now they took out the gold from their website. As said, i really hope they continue to carry gold for a kind price :)
What an awesome video my friend !!! You and your wife both got amazing shots !!!
way too kind. 😄 my wife is always happy when someone likes her photos.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel I love black and white and I love shooting gold and color plus so this video was a huge home run for me ! Lol

Love to hear thatt om,😀 thanks for the support!
You certainly have sparked my interest in this film and buying it in bulk. Great images and your commentary is so pleasant and informative. Congratulations and thank you.
thank you aristo that was too kind. 😄 I bought this quantity because I know what to expect. try the film leiber in peace before you fill your entire fridge. 😄
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Thanks. I buy my film stock from a film stockist in Melbourne Australia, I live in Sydney. Their film selection and rates are great. Thanks again for your great work.
Always thought gold lacks in dynamic range but maybe i should just measure for shadow. Really nice edit btw. Making them golds look like Portra! XD
the dynamic range is actually not that great. if you underexpose then goodbye shadow details. As you say, though, you can get a portra similar palette in gold. thanks for watching. 😄
Currently in Germany for at least the next month and a half. Looks like I’m about to hit up the nearest drug store and load up on film. I have a roll of Gold 200 I’m waiting on development. I’m super excited now.
oh hey mario, i don't think buying gold will be that easy. Gold is usually sold out everywhere. 😅
Great video, also big fan of the Williams's !
Thank you, Willems channel is also one of my favorites!
You are loaded up with Kodak Gold. Leica in action. Enjoy the Kodak Gold 200 and shoot on!
Haha, Thank you for watching and supporting!
Garden gnomes for the win!!!
My first time on here! Really appreciate your channel so far. I have subscribed! :)
Cheers from Canada!
Love to hear that Gaetan, thanks for the support! 😀
57 rolls isn't a lot. nice work! What camera do you shoot with? Leica M?
this video was so good i cant wait to watch your others :) subscribed!
thanks a lot ryan. appreciate you watching and subscribing. 👌
Gerade 19 Euro im DM für nen 3er Pack bezahlt 😢
Dann hast du ja fast schon glück gehabt die kosten nämlich online schon 20,95 €😅
Absolutely love the video and your photos. It's January 2022 in the U.S., and it costs $25 for 3 rolls of Kodak Gold 200. So expensive.
thank you! oh wow that's really expensive. i'm surprised that in the USA where the film comes from the price is usually the highest. 🤔
I don't shoot much with kodak gold but with the results i really need to try the film stock again.
Thanks for watching, please do it. Kodak gold is really versatile. ✌
I also had my issues with the film at first but giving the film another chance was kind of a game changer and I'm not ashamed to say that I rather shoot some Gold or Ultramax instead of Portra. 😂
@@dreamarchist Haha, yeah exactly. Gold and Ultramax are soo good that you really don't need Portra to get a nice look. 😄
Between Gold and ColorPlus, I just stock up on whichever one is the cheapest at the time.
hey, since the two are really similar I would do the same. 😀
That’s exactly what I’m doing lol
Such lovely colors and beautiful compositions! Kodak Gold has some nice creamy colors. I actually have two rolls of Kodak Gold at my disposal but unfortunately, I don’t have a film camera, planning to get one next month. The locations are so pretty especially the retro mall, it would be cool to shoot at a place like that. 6:41 shot was my favorite!
Thank you Rashik 😃 Oh nice that you have two rolls. Just a quick reminder to give the film a lot of light otherwise you won't get creamy colors. Haha, yeah that mall was pretty crazy. 😃 I just should have shot some more pictures there.
Its a great film, what camera did you get? How have you been finding it?
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChanneldo you think I can pull this to 100iso? Im looking for an alternative to silbersalz but can’t find anyone who has done it!
Good ol times...
One year later, at my local DM and Rossman a 3 pack costs 16,99€, so more than 5€ a role...
oh man yes that was not so long ago and the prices have exploded since then.
Hey, love the videos! I would love to see how you scan 35mm and 120 Film.
thanks rich, i am in the process of making the tutorial.😄

Thanks Chris 😀 yes the tutorial will be coming soon. the music was actually just a piece of music i found at epidemic. "what we didn't do -particle house" i think you can find it on youtube too.
There is a great film store in Berlin with a huge selection, but I do admit I'm a big fan of Kodak Gold too
Sometimes the cheapest film available does its job as well as the expensive ones. 😃 thanks for watching.
Did some research on the Kodak Gold and find you taking pictures in Langensalza :D Funny small world.
"The world is always a little smaller than you think."
I assume you are from Bad Langensalza?
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel almost...actually I'm from Großwelsbach (near LSZ) but lived quite a while in Erfurt/Weimar. Quite cool to see there are more TH-camrs out there from this area. How nice, beautiful colors, can you say again what was first camera did you use Olympus what.? Thank you 😉
Glad you like it! The colors really turned out beautifully. And to answer your question, the camera is a Olympus 35RD. It's a nice little rangefinder camera.

Thanks for the tip, the other videos are not so bad mixed. However, it was already too late when I noticed it with these.
I didn't remember that Kodak Gold looks that good. I will give it a try 👌
Thanks 🙏 , you have to scan yourself or have a good lab to control the brightness.

Excellent work. Those scans look so good and Gold really rocks
Thanks Joe, Gold ist pretty nice. 👌
Kodak Gold is my main 35mm film. It’s cheap and has more colour and contrast than Portra.
yes, that's right. i don't even find the colors that different when the contrast and saturation values are similar. thanks for watching. 🙌
I used to shoot weddings with Gold 200 and 400. 200 is my favourite though. Nice video and images.
Thanks simon, I would also like to photograph a wedding with Gold 200. Would certainly look fantastic. 😮
Nice shots! Beautiful colours. I can see why you bought a truckload of Kodak gold, reminds me of my childhood, loading film was such a cool thing to do as a kid. It felt like an important job that dad gave me 😅. Wondering if you’re going to do a comparison of these shots vs a film recipe one of your Fuji camera’s!
thank you jeoffrey. Yes I love that vintage touch that gold has. I bet it reminds you of your childhood since gold was one of the best selling films back then. good idea with the comparison. maybe i will make additional presets for lightroom to dme recipe to achieve certain film looks. 😀

Kodak Gold is GOLD
Definitely! 😆
Nice video! Just curious why you did every photo in portrait?
thank you, i really don't know....i just like it that way. 🤷♂️ the only explanation is that because i'm using 50mm and to get the things in my compostion if have to hold the camera in portrait orientation.

I can see why its the cheapest in your country, don't you folks get a lot of cloudy days over there?
This little film shines with sunlight. If im not shooting Portra its Gold200, and then rarely Colorplus200. Great pics.
Thanks daniel, Yes we have of course very often cloudy skies in Germany. However, more in the fall the summers are usually quite dry. I have tried gold from time to time in cloudy condition but I really don't like the look. 😄 thanks for watching
Difficult to choose a favorite, I absolutely love Germany, they're all great!
Very Nice, Please Try with Ultra Max 400
Thanks, I once shot with Ultramax and it worked just as well. But now Ultramax costs as much as Portra. 😅
You shoot the gold one step over exposed? or normaly weel exposed? NICE SHOOTS MEN 🙏🏼✨
Thanks Daniel, one over and exposed for the shadows. that's the whole trick. 😄
So -- what do you do with all those prints of parts of Buildings -- do you put them onto 'Photo Forums' or not show them ?

Hey! Darf ich fragen, woher du die Abdeckung für die M6 hast? Da wo oben der Blitz drauf kann. Und überbelichtest du dein Film 1 Stop?:) Also ISO 100?

Seems so much like very expensive Portra 400 at times! Well done! I love your videos! Which camera were you using at the beginning? I didn't catch it! I have a bunch of Portra 400 in the fridge for years... so I better get out and use it! :-)
Thanks jason, that was even my plan that I can get a portra result with the cheaper film stock 😀 In the beginning I use an olympus RD there was still a roll in it that I wanted to finish. I even have 2 rolls of portra 400 in my fridge...I really don't know when I should use them.😅
Great examples from both you and your wife. I've been getting the itch to shoot film again, this kodak gold may be just what I'm looking for to use but what b/w film was your wife using because I'm looking to shoot some b/w too? thank you for the video.
Thank you 😃 kodak gold is good but you have to have a little bit of knowledge to postprocess film pictures. A good lab can do the same but you have to tell them. my wife shot my fuji b&w recipe. ✌
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Thank you, something more for me to consider.
Did you push 1 stop also or just metered at iso400? Shots came out fantastic!

Wow, gold I can also imagine well for my model shoots. thank you.
oh yeah skin colors look really good with Gold. 😀
What did you use to scan the negatives?
Oh hey, I have a whole tutorial series on how I create my images. Just look in there I have explained everything. ✌️
I bought 9 rolls of gold today for 12€ per 3 rolls. It was such a deal in todays price range
That's right usually nowadays you get only one roll for 12€. 😅
Loved the church tower.
oh yes the tower was a really great surprise. thanks for your comment. comments are always helpful
Jetzt weiß ich endlich, warum ich bei DM keine Kodak Gold mehr finde.
Das Video ist jetzt 2 Jahre alt. Wenn es einen Grund gibt dann bin ich jedenfalls raus. :D
You're totally right. love to get prints from my rolls of film. 😃 thanks for your comment.
kodak gold and ultramax deserve more than they usually get - on 120 the 'equivalent' for me is the Lomo 400
Yeah its always about Portra but these two film stock can compete if used right. 👌 Lomo 400 is really a good option für 120.
We have a roll of Kodak gold for a 12 EUR :( pack of 3 is about 35 EUR, and it is quite difficult to find :(
oh damn vladimir, i would never buy kodak gold for this price. you can get the look well with any other color negative film. just buy what is well available and "cheap". 😀
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Well, that is the main issue here! Kodak gold is the cheapest colour film we have. :(
Looks great!
Portra looks different for every photographer. it's just that at some point it was agreed that this bright style is portra. What I want to say. do with the film what you like.
What a steal! I don't shoot film but it's definitely much more expensive here 😢
