    So the studios finance the films. Say for example, Sony.
    I worked at a Sony authoring house creating disc's of Sony titles along with other studios like the BBC who want their own produced content put on a medium for home consumption.
    We don't own the licence but we own the "copy" that the studios have implemented in the first place. They want us to have copies.
    Like Paramount, Universal, Warner Brothers and Disney.
    They may sometimes ask smaller labels to put out titles in physical form but yes. The small labels will approach the studios for titles they can make copies of.
    My friend works at the BFI, I might ask him to clarify for me incase I am wrong.
    We do own the "copies" but no, we'll never own the film.
    I think you'll find Cinemas are leant films, they don't own the DCP or the prints back in the day.
    People own old release prints but they don't have permission to sell tickets to people to view said print.
    If you think about it, streaming services shouldn't be allowed to sell us digital copies for a licencethey can lose as it's not really their's to do that with.
    You only really gave half the story, I think it's why some people don't your video.

      Thanks for this.
      Yes I most definitely only know half the story...
      But for me thats what all this is about. I make these videos as discussion points. So that I can learn more. I never claim to know all. I only share what I think is interesting.
      Honestly I never intended to upset or offend people with my discussions here.
      As I learn more. I will make updated videos. And always admit when I am wrong or if I need to clarify something further. I'm certainly no expert.
      Thank you for joining the discussion. I appreciate your input 🙏

      There's still lots I don't know. We are all learning. It's a good discussion. Maybe think about how you word what you want to say.
      "My understanding is.... then put it to your viewers as a question.
      If you're certain about something and done your research (not just passing what other channels might say. I see a lot of videos from well established channels that say things that makes me realise they don't have all the facts)
      I'm guilty of it on my channel on occasion. I'm sure something is right but then question myself after the fact. Like you say if someone points out you might have made a mistake, you readdress it in a future video.
      I hope I didn't make you feel bad. As I said I could be wrong with some of what I said. Hence I'll ask my BFI friend to clarify for me. I can put my own video out but reference your channel in a nice way. My channel is still pretty small so I'm not going to set the world alight by any means.
      Like I said, good discussion, just be careful how you word what you say.

    You actually DO own the media. You own the disc, the box and the copy of the data held within.
    What you don't own is the copyright/distribution rights.

    The point to stress is that you only "own" your copy so long as the license is valid. To my knowledge the only thing between retroactively nixing all licenses on past media is sheer volume and paperwork. People are overly upset about digital distribution because they have a false sense of "owning" physical media.

    • @HydraCollectables
      @HydraCollectables  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I am so glad someone else gets it.
      Alot of people have taken this video as an "attack" on their "ownership". Completey misunderstanding the point I am trying to make.

    Um you DO own the physical media you know why? BECAUSE YOU CAN LEGALLY ONSELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE!!!
    I own transformers on blu ray, noone can legally take it away from me including the media company, they sold the disc to a store who onsold it to me. I own the disc and can enjoy the contents therein. And when i'm done, i can sell it to someone else for them to do the same.
    I dont own the right to make duplicates of that media.

    • @HydraCollectables
      @HydraCollectables  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Please don't get me wrong here. I agree with you. I'm merely saying what the law says. And that too can be different in different countries 👍
      As said in the video. No one is ever going to try and take your discs away. But its interesting to see where the law resides 🧐

    • @devilwarr1or
      @devilwarr1or 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @HydraCollectables I get it, when I buy the dvd/blu ray, I'm not buying the movie itself! As in I don't own the entire IP, I can't just start walking around saying "I own transformers!!" But I do own that disc which includes that movie on it and I own the right to enjoy it for private use only, that means I also can't screen it in a park and charge people entry fees to see it.
      Being a gamer, I have watched as servers close all the time meaning online multiplayer for alot of old games is now gone which leaves single player portions remaining. But lately games that are online ONLY to play it are disappearing and the entire game is gone and the disc which holds the game is now rendered useless (friday the 13th the games servers next year are closing rendering the disc useless). THAT is a legit example of not owning a game even though it's physically there. I feel that is a better example of what you're saying.

    • @HydraCollectables
      @HydraCollectables  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@devilwarr1or I'm going to look into that! And maybe make a follow up video 👍 Thanks for the info!

    • @devilwarr1or
      @devilwarr1or 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @HydraCollectables no problem. It would be a more accurate way to make the same point about discs you own not being yours.
      Friday the 13th the games servers are ending next year due to licensing and the discs will be useless.
      Another immediate example is battlefield 1943 on xbox, the games servers were shut down this month due to low player count (it is an old game but still) and in doing so the game is unplayable. I can start it but that's it.
      I'm sure you'll find more examples and I didn't mean to hijack this video to be about games when you're more talking movies just that it's more relevant to your point.

    Hard to make a case that the physical media owned does not belong to the owner, as it was made available for sale. If the copy is labelled Not for Resale, or you start distributing copies, you are SOL.

    Contents of the film. visual and audio, is intellectual property owned by the studio. Legal copies of the film on vhs, betamax, laserdisc, dvd, etc is yours.

    • @skorpers
      @skorpers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Until the licenses are revoked. You purchased a license to play it from the medium that srores the copy you acquired. The only reason they haven't revoked old licenses relates to the value proposition (nothing) in doing so. And the volume and impossibility of finding them. Napster was deemed too big of a lawsuit to handle for example.
