This is Richard's best album and my favorite Celtic rock album forever. I doubt that there will ever be another quite as good. The critics had rocks in their heads (I don't know what they had in their ears). The Old Changing Way has brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. Seriously.
jacki sterner - that's a hard statement to justify, but I agree that it is woefully underrated and under-known. Thompson has produced so many excellent albums over his career that, to say this is his best work, diminishes such greats as (Where do I start?), Black Lightning, Beeswing, A Love You Can't Survive, Sibella, Hard on Me, Put it There Pal, She Sang Angels to Rest, Down Where the Drunkards Roll, etc. etc. need I continue?
Back in the day LPs cost $3-4 dollars so I would sometimes buy based on the jacket or some other aspect I liked. Hadn't heard of Fairport yet, figured I'd found a novelty record; but when I put it on the turntable pure beauty and strength came pouring out of the speakers and I fell in love.
I've heard it said that he won't play this song live, or at least he declines when asked ... does anybody know what that's about? This song often leaves me in tears if I listen all the way through ...
When this album came out I refused to even listen to it. I couldn't forgive RT for leaving Fairport and posing on the cover with an acoustic guitar. When I eventually bought it 5 years later (after hearing "I want to see the bright lights" ) I realised what a gem I had been missing, and even recognised some great songs that I had heard other people sing and had not realised where they came from. I suspect that other people gave it the same reaction, hence its poor initial sales. I wish he would revive some fo these songs i his live concerts.
Chris Smith - he did The Angels took my Racehorse Away at Celtic connections a couple of years ago - it's somewhere here on TH-cam - excellent version too IMO
Happy Birthday Richard Thompson born on April 3, 1949. He is an English singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Thompson first gained prominence in the late 1960s as the lead guitarist and songwriter for the folk rock group Fairport Convention. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Thompson_(musician)
Tis Richard at his very best. I would really love to hear, The New St George without having to watch the anti Bush video that goes with it. Any Chance? ;-)
Love this album!! Bought it as a cutout at a record store. Even had the Warner Brothers info sheet for the radio station. Got Richard to autograph it a number of years ago. But I have to admit the mixing just sucks.
Verily! I was singing this Rovers song on the way home from Kroger just now. Nipped a mini of Old Changing Turkey 101 on the journey, too... Happy Thanksgiving to ye all. Everyone but me is leaving for Thanksgiving Day. So I might be havin' rum and mushrooms in me Eggnog, dear friends!
Absolutely correct.. I think Mr. Thompson disses this LP is it's too close to his leaving Fairport. I however love it precisely because of that reason.
Richard Thompson at his very best, on his best ever album, pure beautiful genius, I love this album so much...

Deep moody bass lines... Pat Donaldson genius on bass. I am also a bass player.

You have made my week, thank-you so much
J'adore cette chanson et surtout la voix de Richard.
Oui!

Idk... go to iTunes?
the late Benjamin Lo-Fi liked this too, and we post unearthed songs by Benjamin on our youtube channel, for curious ears to hear...

We never agreed to divide our tin. Classic
Supposedly this was the worst selling album in the whole Reprise catalog. Just shows you that there ain't no justice in this here vale o' tears!

Nights in White Satin?
Tinkers in white satin? ;)
I've always thought that as well. Completely different treatment, though.
