So proffessor - this is my idea for a different kind of Modern that will stop WotC messing with it:
Name: Super Standard
Card Pool: All cards that have ever been in Standard or the early equivilent.
Starting Ban List: The Reserved list the current Legacy Ban list, the Current Modern Ban list
The idea is that this will prevent WotC from releasing sets like Horizons, and make the defining aspect of the format cards that have to have been in standard.
There will probably be more bans needed, maybe cards like Snapcaster or Force of Will, but the idea is that the format will be more STABLE.
You can ban cards as needed to make the format diverse and interactive, but decks should be much more stable.

Why the Hell would you want WotC not to print Sets like Horizons? It's the best Thing happening to Modern since forever, especially Modern Horizons 2.
This is just as silly as being against WotC printing "Commander Sets", and yes it's not the same, but Modern should not rely on Standard Sets. Relying on Standard Sets is what was killing Modern. With Modern Horizons Wizards doesn't have to worry about if this and that Card would be bad for Standard
Modern Horizons 2 especially shows that WotC put thought into the Modern Meta, many of these Cards are entirely focused on powering up Modern Tier 2 and Tier 3 Decks. This is the best thing to happen to Modern. Especially for those of us liking Variety in Modern.
Modern needed it's own Set + the "Reprint to become Modern Legal" Cards, we Modern Players have been asking for this since EXTENDED was gone and we got Modern.
I play Competitive and Fun/Brew/Jank Modern and Legacy and i couldn't be happier with Modern Horizons 2
Regarding Price Complaining. Would be nice if the Prof points out that these Prices might be an Issue in North America. I paid for Modern Horizons 2 Collectors Booster Boxes and normal Draft Booster waaaay less than what they apparently are sold for in North America

When it comes to prices of new products I feel like we are being slapped on both cheeks. In a time when scalping is becoming a new pandemic, Wizards decides to raise the price across the board. Like the Prof said, Wizards has no care for a penniless player like myself. I haven't bought a product in a while do the rising prices, but nothing will change cause I don't matter.
I'm fairly sure you're not penniless but that's a bad way of framing it since you would not be their target market since they want money. On a serious note, there is no reason this couldn't be the price of a standard box or even the price of the previous mh box. It's a shame with the price increases but as long as people buy the product they are going to get it if they can afford it and a lot of us can afford it.

My take on the pricing: I am honestly shocked that the whole Magic community isn't in revolt. They jacked up the price on what is essentially a must-have product if you want to remain competitive. They are selling powered-up cards for a premium and the loser is the player, especially the kids that would love to play the game but just can't afford it anymore. I'm all for premium versions and special collectible cards in Magic, but the game pieces, at least upon release, should be relatively affordable. Doubling the cost of something that costs them the same amount to produce, and trying to justify that on the back of "the cards are super-strong" is going down the road of some terrible precedents that they have been setting over the past few years. A lot of people tried to warn the community about where this was going to lead... and now we are here. This is not healthy for the game or for the player. They were told to double their profits, and instead of trying to expand the reach of the game and bring in new players, they are simply setting their sites on fleecing their customers. At what point does it break? It is not healthy in the long term for the game. They are simply trying to appease their shareholders with short term profits. At what point does the house of cards come tumbling down? When do we, as a community, say "enough is enough?" (and if they were just impacting Modern that would be one thing - but a LOT of these cards look specifically designed to impact other formats... especially Commander)
agreed. I am one of those enfranchised players. My first sets were unlimited and antiquities. I am finally saying enough is enough. it does not feel good.

@@Dracinard What is the huge difference between this set and a Masters set? Masters sets are all reprints. If you already have the cards you can ignore the Masters sets unless you want a shiny new version. Masters sets are designed to get new copies of those cards in the market, which depresses the pricing and makes the game more accessible. This is the opposite of that.
Does nobody understand how having blinged out chase cards makes the product more affordable for the average player? Has nobody looked at the price of modern or standard decks recently? This is a god-awful take.

As a new magic player as of summer of 2020. The price for this type of set is the biggest turn off I’ve ever seen for someone. Even if someone makes good money. The price for this particular set is terrible and I feel like it caters to the fear of missing out before it gets even more expensive on the secondary market when people who have business and the cash to buy 50-100k worth of product and control it
FOMO is the driving force for selling this game now. Between collector boosters and secret lairs Wizards are driving the price up to see who pays. Sadly people will buy this.
Because packs are gambling, and gambling more money for more money is what gamblers naturally do. They're basically abusing people with a known disorder in addition to trying to fleece whales.
My group drafted Modern Horizons most weekends while it was available, and it often was available as low as $150 per box. No additional prize support, but it was $20 per entry and we did rare redrafts. MH1 was a fantastic draft format.
Would love to also draft MH2 and see how it stacks up, but if we have to raise the entry to $25 that's already pushing it quite a bit and we'll do other sets instead.
For expensive sets I don't usely buy boxes I just buy singles

I found myself proxying this year (for edh) for the first time ever. I just want to ejoy the game man without getting bankrupt. I love the collecting part too but with the ever increasing price of products and and endless stream of them there's just no way I can get all I need. There are sites that print proxies for 50 cents each that look almost like real magic cards, it's just such a relief, and everybody in my playgroup does the same. I have no problem with whale products like collectors boosters but when a box of regular draft boosters are 300 dollars that's just problematic.

I see the alt version fetchlands being crazy expensive and the regular fetch lands being pretty much the same price.
re: price, the silver lining for me at least is that this is an unlimited print run. I can't afford to buy packs of this set, but I know a lot of other people will crack them for fetches and sell the chaff, so hopefully I'll be able to pick up the cards I like as singles. Asmora and Lonis are both so cool.
That's really the only upside here, whales are gonna blow hundreds of dollars on this product and the value of everything that's not either a fetchland or the half dozen other chase cards is gonna be super low as they flood the market.

The increased pricing of these premium products just hammers home how disingenuous WOTC is about their reprint policy. They'll say and do anything to turn a profit, milking every last dollar from their player-base. Not only are people gambling on what they open, but also gambling on whether or not it'll be playable in months to come... because pushed and overpowered design choices have been rampant within the past 2 years. Also, I don't know how WOTC gets away with claiming they don't pay attention to the secondary market, yet ratchets up the prices on these sets due to the "value" of established cards.

I stoped playing magic when they started rotating modern and the power push we had roughly 2 years ago. I started playing again a few months ago thinking that they finally would stop flipping modern on its head, but that didn't stop. And now we have another rotation with modern horizons, I think the format and the game as whole is no longer for me. I'm happy for those who enjoy it because I remember the feeling of excitement with magic and that was great but I just keep feeling frustrated with power creep and the increase in prices, I played modern because I don't like running after cards all the time and having to go through constant change. I don't think I'll keep playing magic anymore. Great video though!

The rares and mythics aren’t. Maybe some good commons and uncommons ? I’ll just look at the card list once it’s out and grab whatever catches my eye. I’ll snag a pack or two if I’m at the store but not buying a box 📦

That discussion about price is exactly how I feel post-Walking Dead/Universes Beyond. I hate it, I've stopped buying Magic in a vain attempt to do something about it, but WotC's busy printing money, so why should they care? Good luck to them I suppose, but it's sad to think a game I've loved for so long is increasingly not for me anymore.

That is around when I stopped buying also. I used to buy boxes every set and get every commander deck. When there were 3-4 releases a year that was feasible for someone without tons of spare money, but enough to allocate to a hobby. Now there are so many releases, different boxes of each release, secret lairs, it is impossible to keep up without being wealthy. And then their statement well maybe this product isn't for you. Fair, but if they stop making products for me, I'm not going to buy anything, and haven't now for a while.
Wizards of the coast hears our concerns, but they don't LISTEN.

I don't think they _need_ to - the idea for a D&D set has been a thing since they first acquired D&D. It's not at all indicative of them "running out of ideas".
Now the lack of lore being consistently available is a different story... firing the creative team and hiring people like Weissman just tanked interest in the game's history, and while they brought back the online web story format for Zendikar, there's little to no indication of that continuing. We'll have to wait for Innistrad to see what, if anything, they have planned.

Almost seems like wotc is trying to get everyone to forget about legacy, and turn modern into an "affordable" version of legacy. Then pioneer kind of picks up moderns spot. I don't know but it feels like there's a shift going on.
Thing is, Pioneer's power level just can't get to modern's ever. Modern, because of the lack of hyper efficient counter magic and combo enablers, is closer to the wild, wild west format moreso than legacy. I guarantee mental misstep would be a healthy inclusion for modern, whereas it's immensely impactful in legacy, just as one example.

This set kinda broke me on collecting MtG. I like collecting singleton sets, that way I can play what I want in Commander, and I did it with the none Masters products alongside Standard. I've given up on it now, I baught a box of MH2 because of fetches and I wanted to support my local after they reopened but I can't keep shelling out that kinda cash. It's actually silly how expensive this stuff is.

@@registereduser If I may add to this, I feel similarly as it seems ridiculous to me that a couple of cards can cost as much as a boardgame with multiple expansions. And when you are mostly just playing commander like me, is there even a point to buy cards for collecting? Might buy some cheaper new Boros cards as I love them, but the rest, yeah proxing might be the way to go now.

It's more akin to a send off, I suppose. I was set on buying a box but since Eldraine I've felt that trying to collect full singleton sets is impractical (it was before but now there's almost twice the cards per set). MH2's card selection is really good, and hopefully the fetches will make it worth while financially but I've basically told myself that this is the last none Standard set I'll try to collect. My wallet and shelf space will thank me in the future.

Grief is clearly better than solitude. When you start the game you cant ephemerate solitude for any value, but you can play grief 3 times by turn 2 and destroy their hand. But if youre using ephemerate you might as well just play both of them.

I like ignoble hierarch, but I feel like it shouldn't have exalted. I thought exalted was a Bant mechanic, so seeing it on a Jund card feels wrong. Something like devour would make me like it a lot more.
I've voiced the same thing, and the response I've gotten is, "well black has had a couple Exalted cards in the past so it's fine". The point is that THOSE cards shouldn't have had Exalted either!

I really hope that faeries gets some love soon. I’ve had a lot of people mention that we got brazen borrower recently and I tell them the same thing that you, Brian, say about true name nemesis: this isn’t a faeries card, it’s just a really good card that happens to be a faerie. It does nothing for us specifically, and any other blue deck can play it as well.
I love the tools merfolk got in this set. Very true to what the deck wants to do and very powerful.
The 299 draft box seems insane to me. This set looks so fun, and at normal prices I probably would've bought two, three, maybe more boxes of it to play limited and maybe open some fetches. At 300, I'm not buying any of it. Honestly - it feels like buying it is a vote for future sets to be 300/box.

My response to these premium sets has gone from "man, this sucks, I'm not gonna spend this much for a damn booster" to "well, maybe there will be some singles that I can pick up". It sucks, I've just resigned myself to the fact that there's this part of the game that I can't justify being a part of because of the exorbitant price. It's a game, the game pieces are made of cardboard for pete's sake, I can't see any reason why they can't price these things so that everyone that wants to participate can. I really enjoy opening boosters, I know it's not economically wise but I can justify the price for the fun... when the price is reasonable. Of course, truth be told I can think of a reason why they wouldn't do that, same reason as always, greed.

the enemy fetchlands needed them far more than the allied ones, which are in khans of tarkir standard boxes. I was buying up windswept heaths on cardkingdom for 8.99 each during the pandemic, is that not cheap enough? I thought it was a steal considering scalding tarn was 100$ not that long ago

He’s talked about it in previous recent videos, he’s happy they’re getting reprinted but said it was not what the game needed as they’re still going to be premium priced cards from a premium priced set.
I don’t see fetch lands becoming cheaper as this set is overpriced as hell.

Even proxies for fetch lands can be upwards of 10 dollars lmao. They’re so salivated over that they will never be cheap. Luckily I can get proxies for 3 dollars a pop but I’d rather have the originals. But eh

I do watch your streams of modern and legacy as they’re good fun and allow me a little window into those worlds. They’ve really helped me be a better player with learning timings and how cards interact so thank you for that, I really enjoy the content 😇 Keep up the great work!
The issue with Rishadan Dockhand is that the merfolk player usually deploys their threats to attack. now you're in the awkward spot to either hit dem with the dockhand and not being able to tax their opponent, or vise versa
Omg, that intro was awesome. Im new to it all, and probably buying a mh2 pack, bundle, also looked at commander pack to start. Guess im best going to a shop and seeing the guys playing and collecting. I lean towards collecting for fun
Voidwalkers can cast cards exiled with other voidwalkers and that might be too strong

My favorite thing about Modern Horizons 2 is that the set has built upon many undersupported or overshadowed mechanics. My favorite picks: Amass, Eternalize, and keywords from Guilds of Ravnica

What's your opinion on the 3rd Mythic card being removed from White, so that Green can have a 4th Mythic? Regardless I think it's still a well designed set with cards for everyone.
I think it's better for wotc to bring back the original msrp like before to stop the spiking of the prices for MH2 and future products? I may be wrong since I forgot the reason why they took it out in the first place.
they like it better this way, they can charge as much as possible and basically control the floor price through amazon (not saying its good for the consumer)

I started playing in 2012 and the game was an expensive hobby. I now make 4x as much money and yet I feel priced out this set except for a handful of singles
In reference to Kira and Svyelun and the different automatic counterspell -
Don't forget WARD only affects enemy spells. So one advantage that word has is you can cash friendly spells on your creatures for no extra cost. Whereas Kira would counter your own GIANT GROWTH-like spell.

I really want to draft this set but I cannot reconcile the reality that it is a small box of cardboard for almost 300 dollars. Ill pick up singles that I want that fall below a dollar, otherwise we are switching to proxies for commander nights. I love drafting but I can get a lot of other fun out of this kind of money. A cool set that's not for me I guess.

Tide shaper is an Ixalan merfolk. While Rushadan Dockhand is from Dominaria. I like that the art direction is akin to the core sets where cards in the same tribe can be from any of the multiverse planes.
