This is well done and I appreciate that it’s open source. Open source could be the legacy of humanity because of people like you.

So great! What I would do next is to add two stepper motors and by adding coordinates, or by selecting a target on stellarium to drive the telescope there automatically.

very nice Raspberry Pi project. I have an Orange Pi 5 and have plans to do a similar Stellarium, GoTo, PHD2 and this video really helps. Thank you.

a future upgrade you may want to consider would be replacing your potentiometers with stepper motors, that way you could precisely move it by software.

Im in the process of building my own mount. I have a 12 inch newtonian im putting on it. Im hoping to just control it with stellarium on my phone or laptop.

Hello Simon, It is very nice to see your video. I am being thinking of motorizing my hand made 5" Newtonian reflecting telescope with Dobsonian mounting. I love your way of pursuing things without using any sophisticated engineering.

hey Simon, I'd like to have a complete wireing diagram for this set up, I won't be using stelarium though due to having down loaded a copy and finding a "Trojan" in it.
the telescope I will be working with is a 12 inch/305 mm Orion, I will be building a complete new mount including worm gears with slip clutch.. I also plan to up grade the guidance with an auto guide scope.

This is absolutely awesome. I have the same telescope and have been looking for something like this.
How easy, or hard, is it for a complete novice to set this up? Any chance of you emailing me a complete parts list and the best place to get them?
I know I am asking a lot but I'm a bit desperate... Lol.
    Kind regards,
    Daniel

Merci..

  • @himselfe

It would have been nice to see you control the telescope from the laptop, i.e pick an object in Stellarium(?) and have the telescope orient itself automatically.

    • @haydenwhitbread724

I agree that'd be cool but I believe this type of system simon designed will be more functional for the AltAz type mounts in the field. Don't have to wait on slow slew times. Simply explore stellarium and push to. If this were an EQ mount though, it would be more useful to have a lock on/tracking mount like you said.

Fantastic - thx. I'm not familiar with raspberry Pi : why python ? How do you interface with stellarium ? Could you you give a starting point/specs on that issue ?

great stuff. i was considering doing something similar untill I gave up on dobsonians. Your solution came out very elegant, most of the ideas I had were much more clunky, but I had no experience with programing and I was making it up as I went along.
Where are you taking this next? Any new funciton you´re considering?
    once again: good job :)

hello I have a SKYWATCHER DOBSON 203/1200 SKYLINER and I would like advice on which (P U S H TO or other system) and which encoder? And is it compulsory to have a laptop to do the encoders? I am a beginner and your help would be very precious. if you had the links of the pages it would be even better thank you. have a good day.

What a cool project! I bought a 10 inch DOB, I guess the same one as yours and really wanting to give it more functionality. Just a newbie question: will all these electronics survive dew exposure? What about cold weather? All in all, seems like a great project to delve into if the budget allows it.
