This is beautiful Cody. As an artist myself, one tip I use to achieve proper placement of my subject is to draw the inital sketch upside down on the canvas. This cancels out any preconcieved notions about what the subject "should look like" , and helps me focus on the actual shape I see in the reference photo. Once it looks good upside down, flip it over and do the little adjustments. I'm sure uou've also heard of using a mirror? Check your art in the mirror. This helps eliminate problems later on in your work. Keep painting. You've got some wicked natural talent there.
This is such a beautiful painting Cody! You have a new subscriber🎉 I am painting a horse in acrylics for the first time ever and now I feel like I can do it. Thank you for this wonderful tutorial ❤
Wonderful action of the subject and application of color. People who know horses are often very aware of conformation and being an equine artist myself I would like to bring your attention to the left eye which appears to be placed a little too high and could also be moved to the left just a tad. If reproducing a photograph remember the camera can lie so it's up to us to rely on our knowledge to over ride the inaccuracies in photos. It's a great painting! Thank you for sharing.
I've been toying with the idea of switching from acrylic to oils, I think you just made my mind up for me to take the plunge. I've been trying to figure out western style art and your video just gave me some ideas. Thank you Gorgeous piece btw
Love your colour mixing. I mostly use acrylics and it’s frustrating to mix a few colours and come out with a completely unexpected shade. And that’s in addition to the problem of the paints drying before I’m ready to apply them!
How beautiful, I drew a horse a few days ago, and I would be happy if you wrote down the colors for the horse you are painting, it looks perfect and amazing, thank you very much
Great work, Cody; you have mad painting skills and are a natural teacher! Just FYI though, unless you've acquired the rights to the reference photo, you should not be using it on TH-cam; the horse photo image you used is on a book jacket titled: "Horse - Magnificent, Playful, Loyal" by C. Austen et al... I'm not sure who the photographer is or who owns the rights to the photo.
I subscribed to follow your progress. You're doing such a great work now and I'm so curious how your art will look in next 10 years :D Btw I love to paint horses!
When it comes to realist painting, it’s always handy to have some good reference material. While doing painting, I used two to three images. And you can apply everything you’ve learned here with acrylics, you just don’t have to wait as long for the paint to dry.
You have a good talent you are developing. It is a pity you did not get the eyes correctly positioned prior to starting. It would have helped with the end result. Funny, when looking at some paintings, I find myself wondering if that particular horse had very differently shaped front feet, or is that is just how you painted them? Sometimes, with a horse that has a conformation fault, it can be hard to translate it to a painting without looking like it was an ill formed composition by the artist. Such a conundrum. Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting.
It took several days to put together one video, and I found that it was taking to much time away from painting itself. I may get back into it in the coming years. But in the meantime you can follow me on Instagram where I post about all my new work, as well as short time lapse videos😁
