You've opened up an enormous can of worms with FFXIV music. It's an endless selection.
One thing you may be interested to note is that Answers (from base game) and Dragonsong (from first expansion) are from Nobuo Uematsu. At around the third expansion, Masayoshi Soken takes over as lead composer for the game so you may notice some differences. Still very great music, bit of a different style. Soken is also part of a metal band for the game, The Primals, which features a lot of great music as well.

So, a few things about the context of the lyrics, Heavenward is about finding the truth behind the theocratic city-state of Ishgard (the "Children of the Land" in the lyrics). It was once ruled by a king, and they went to war with dragonkind over territory. One day, a woman of Ishgard fell in love with a dragon, and together they brought their people together in peace, ("one true love they did find, bringing land and heavens near") until a king, after 200 years, was manipulated into killing and harvesting one of the elder dragons for power. That dragon's brother went mad with grief and anger, determined to bring pain to that king's people and decendants for all time, as dragon perception of time is different from mortals: after a thousand years, his sister's death was as fresh as when he first discovered her mutilated corpse.
The king's children thought they killed this dragon, and decided Ishgard no longer needed a king, ("a throne lying empty, a reign incomplete") and gave a false account of events to take away their complicity in events. But that dragon didn't die, and instead periodically continued the war, killed thousands of Ishgard's people every few years for the next 1,000 years, with Ishgard changing their doctrine to obsolve them of guilt and making the war with dragons a holy war in order to provide stability and hope for their people, even though it also ensured the people of Ishgard would never want the war, and the cycle of retaliation, to end.
The expansion really delves into themes of how lies create pain far beyond what you initially expect, and the importance of letting go.

The whole thing wouldn't have to be live streamed, but a zone by zone musical takedown of XIV would be absolutely INCREDIBLE. I was one of the 2.0 alpha testers and the first time I zoned into New Gridania and the woodwinds kicked in.... it felt like I was home. Souken is a musical genius, and the fact that the majority of the music is composed on a synthesizer is quite surprising to folks (obviously the lush orchestrations of Answers and Dragonsong were live performances.) I asked him about it once at a Fanfest and it's a custom system unique to SE, likely built to their in-house standards. (Never forget that Sakimoto of the original FF Tactics is the whole reason video games start sounding more like real orchestras and less like the blips and bloops that Uematsu wrangled into something decent. Sakimoto did not like the PS1 sound chip.)

16:41 You ask when this song plays in the game, and the answer is kind of constantly? Just about all the rest of the music used throughout an expansion is based on the main theme via heavy use of leitmotifs, but each track is done in different styles and tempos. The repetition of the theme in this way really cements the vibe of each chapter in the game's sprawling story.

When this theme plays in game, it's a lyrical version of a motif we hear a lot throughout the story, and this version is right at the climax. The song plays right before a matchmade activity, so you have nothing to do other than sit there waiting for the queue and listening to the song. One amazing thing about this song is there's actually two main versions of it. The first one is without lyrics and is played during the first chunk of the expansion story. There's then a really dramatic turning point in the story and the song starts playing again. Only this time, it's the second version and you actually hear the lyrics for the first time and understand. Truly an amazing experience when you realize that and hear the true version of the song that you've been listening to for the entire time so far.
Also, the name of the song is a bit of a key to all of this as it's kind of the song that the dragons sing to humans (children of the land) asking why did they do what they did and asking them to understand/remember what actually happened.

It's really hard to describe how perfectly the sound team inserts these tracks into the game to heighten the emotional peaks. Throughout the entire Heavensward expansion we catch little bits and pieces of this melody but it's always just a small little phrase with various solo instruments. It's only at the end of it all after we've learned the full story of what happen thousands of years past to destroy the bond between dragon and mankind, after our character (a representative of man) underwent a multitude of trials, walked in the memories of the Great Wyrms, experienced the rawness of their betrayal, fury, and forlorn, finally earning the trust of the eldest survivor and being gifted his ancient power to put his vengeance mad brother to peace...that we finally "hear" the Dragonsong in its entirety.

I've been an Nobuo Uematsu fan ever since I booted up my first introduction to the Final Fantasy series, FFVIII, in 1999. I have listened to each FF soundtrack so many times I've lost count, been to Distant Worlds orchestra concerts (cried every time "At Zanarkand" has been played), played every game he's composed for multiple times, and still to this day, this Uematsu-san's music makes me emotional. Each time someone in the music world listens to his work and validates what I have felt for years, it brings tears to my eyes. I love watching people react to his pieces and can't wait to see more from DrumRollTony and others.
So, this was a mushy way of saying, "thank you" for listening to the music that has been the soundtrack to my life's journey for so long and I'm so glad you've enjoyed it so far! I look forward to seeing even more pop up on this channel and will probably geek out every time they do.

Other comments have already covered a lot of the context behind this song, but the thing that stands out to me the most in FFXIV music is the excellent use of leitmotifs. Soken in particular knows how to tug on our heartstrings by calling back to poignant moments in the story and as you listen to more music from FFXIV you will start to notice them as well! Thanks for your commentary, always love seeing FFXIV music enjoyed by new listeners!

Uematsu did the main songs for the original release of FFXIV, and came back for this, Answers from the previous expansion and Revolutions from the 3rd expansion. But Masayoshi Soken is the lead composer and musical director for the game. If you check out more of the music from the game, you’re going to hear more from Soken including his rock styling. He’s one of the guitarists in The Primals, the Square Enix/FFXIV in-house band. Soken himself was suffering from cancer and receiving chemotherapy as he wrote the music for the games final expansion, Endwalker. The man was dealing with his mortality as he wrote about the battle between hope and despair, the reoccurring theme since answers. Check out Flow, and Close in the Distance, two songs from Endwalker that helped them to win the Game Award for Best Score and Music in 2023. And if you watch the Primals version of Close in the Distance, you can see Soken playing his custom guitar. But there are live orchestra performances of both songs as well on the Final Fantasy XIV channel on TH-cam.

13:35 Ok now imagine you're fighting the final boss, and he suddenly becomes invincible, yells at the player while referencing the narrative theme of the song, and then charges up a super attack, timed to hit with the crescendo.
It's fucked up how the FFXIV team can write music this good and also weave it into the gameplay such that if you play optimally, a boss fight will perfectly line up with the music. It makes for unforgettable experiences.
Besides the other tracks suggested, "In the Balance" is an absolute banger.

16:40 It's featured in a certain plot-relevant fight during the Heavensward expansion, so fairly early on as the overall game goes. As with many parts of Answers, there are leitmotifs from it throughout the expansion and elsewhere in the game. The composers also really love to start with songs that develop from one plot area, dungeon, boss fight, etc. to another and ultimately culminate in something larger - e.g. "A Long Fall" (Shadowbringers) and "Scream" (Endwalker) are good examples of the penultimate expression of this concept. I highly recommend both.

I had the absolute pleasure of hearing this preformed live at Distant Worlds (the concert dedicated to all things final fantasy music), and to say it was overwhelming to hear this song sung live with a choir is an understatement. everything I thought it could have been was it and more- this song already gets me misty eyed on a good day so I was holding back TEARS for the whole performance and felt like I couldn't breathe, because I felt like it would detract from the performance. amazing song and i hope you look into other FFXIV music- there's something there for everyone, from hugely orchestrated songs like this, to rock, dance music, and even just silly stuff. :)

Important thing about the role of music in this game: they are very consciously and deliberately placing and using music for everything. Answers and Dragonsong and other expansion intros are not just simply epic cinematics. They are used as frames and returning narrative additions to the story. Background songs for areas also add to narratic change, that is why so many mentioned Closed in the Distance for example: you are in the very last area in the game, at the end of the world, in space, among the stardust, where all species lost hope. After you arrive, you eventually bring hope, and the promise that races, factions, continents, planets can unite and stand together. That is when the music changes PERMANENTLY forever for that character to Closed in the Distance for the final area. Instances have chunks of the music on repeat, depending on which part of the fight you are doing. As your team progresses in the fight, music flawlessly transitions to the next loop. Many bosses even have timed attacks that fit the rhytm of the music! Narrative and music absolutely go hand in hand. They spare no money when it comes to both. I am a proud owner of all the released vynils! ^.^ You must do the remaining 3 expansions songs, too! ^.^

FEELS Uematsu.

Its funny how you would probably nail this as a sort of ballad credits theme....when in reality its a boss track lol. You get an absolutely insane amazing cutscene between the big bad and thier brother, and your character gets thier badass moment, only for it to fade back into gameplay and this track starts. Its just you staring down a large dragon on to of a shattered bridge. Then you queue into the fight....and the music continues into the fight until phase 2.
Also yeah the lyrics being an absolute pivotal part of the track with how its basically a direct plea to the big bad. Also i always get goosbumps during this fight when the uplifting part of track hits in the fight.

Uematsu is still making Final Fantasy music, though! He is working on the new FF7 remake trilogy. Turns out the credits song for 'Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade' features Loren Allred, of "Never Enough" fame! I didn't realize until I saw a TH-cam video of her performing "No Promises To Keep" live with Uematsu. I did a triple take and almost had to pinch myself. Not FFXIV, but I would recommend music from the Octopath Traveler games. It is one of my top soundtracks of all time. The Octopath Traveler main theme is amazing on it own but if you then also listen to Octopath Traveler 2’s main theme, it gets elevated! Some other top Octopath 1 songs would be The Frostlands, My Quiet Forest Home, Decisive Battle II, and They Who Govern Reason. Octopath 2 is so full of bangers that idk where to start, but I will recommend (other than the main theme) Critical Clash II and Battle on the Sea.
FFXIV soundtrack though, my two biggest favorites and recommends would be Ultima (theres a few alternate versions of this but the one I’m talking about is from “The Realm Reborn” soundtrack specifically) and On Our Fates Alight (Shadowbringers expansion). Ultima is an epic battle theme and On Our Fates Alight is a chill, inspiring piece that just makes me happy. (Tomorrow and Tomorrow is another fav but that has already been highly recommended by others)

I guess Revolutions would be the next one as it marks the final main composition by Uematsu and Calloway, who are replaced by Soken and Amanda for Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Flow. You already reacted to Shadowbringers and Endwalker. However other good songs from FFXIV are Footfalls, Scream, To the Edge, In the Balance, Oblivion. Then you have the lyrical replies Return to Oblivion and Your Answer (responds to Answers but it’s not voiced). I think Athena the tireless one is also a response to Scream. If you are into techno the music for the Omega raids and Alexander are great. And Wayward Daughter is a favorite of mine but that whole section is mostly in Japanese with only some English.

Probably my favorite thing about the FFXIV soundtrack is that the big main themes (Answers, Dragonsong, Heavensward, Tomorrow and Tomorrow, etc.) are represented by leitmotifs appearing in most of the other songs of the expansion. So you can often tell when a song came out just by listening to it.
EDIT: Technically not as true for ARR, but definitely more true for the expansions afterwards.

Thirty-five year veteran jobbing muso and producer, and normally one of the most hyper-critical about music. I got completely sucked into the game mostly because of the music. There isn't a note out of place, even in the twee, tropish bits. It has an incredibly diverse sonic palette, and it's all breathtaking.
FFXIV is the best and most complete entertainment experience I've ever encountered. When Close in the Distance plays in the Endwalker MSQ, the combined effect is to suck all the breath out of you and the tears won't stop. Just brilliant.

Cried in this song, cried in answers. Legitimately. There's rarely a song I don't like.
    Semi-spoilers alert.
This song plays twice in gameplay, once at the end of Heavens ward, and once in a great battle afterwards.
I balled first time during the battle, it was not at all what I expected to wander in and just Dragonsong playing. I think I died way more than usual trying to sing and fight at the same time while crying. If you never play, but check out a playthrough, you'll know why it stung so bad.
This game really knows how to make me cry. The only other game I've played off the top of my head that got me this worked up was Persona 4. (Still working on Persona 3)

Bro I know you mentioned you haven't played XiV which is perfectly fine. If you do ever jump into it I promise you, go back and re-listen to the music and while you've done an AMAZING job in unpacking the music, someone like you will truly be able to appreciate the melody's used. They actually reflect the story being played by the player and the notes hit SOOOO MUCH HARDER once you know what they are referring to. You are absolutely not at fault because you are WAY more experienced than I in recognizing the intricacies of music. but my man, you will be enveloped in pure musical bliss if you have the background of the melody. not the lyrics (even though they are immensely important too) but the notes that you already distinguish. it truly changed peoples lives and i want that happiness for all who listen to these legendary tracks.
