Excellent tripod juggling skills Dave 😊
Winston looking good. Another point about legs with just 2 sections: the sections are thicker and stronger making the tripod more stable.
Multi section tripods always end in little spindle sections that I just don’t trust 👍🏻

Yes good point. Thicker ones are easier to use with gloves on as well

Thanks for posting Dave. I just wanted to mention a design you haven't covered. I certainly wouldn't call it the lightest to carry around, but not so long ago, someone gifted me a Libec TH-650 DV Tripod. I realise this twin leg design is primarily for supporting much heavier cameras than a typical DSLR or mirrorless camera even with a super-telephoto lens fitted (anticipated gross equipment weight being one of the major factors in determining choice of tripod leg and head combination), but overall, it's a very reassuring design with its braced legs and video biased fluid head. So much so, I'd almost consider using it as an acrow prop should the need arise. lol. Incidentally, my ideal tripod based on versatility, travel weight and arca swiss compatibility would be a Freewell Carbon Fiber Real Travel Tripod when funds allow. Looking forward to part two...

Thank you for posting. I haven’t heard of that manufacturer here in the UK and I’ve no doubt missed out lots of designs but you’re right, the main job of a tripod is to hold your camera still and that sounds like it would definitely do that! Buying a tripod always seems to be a compromise between sturdiness and weight and everyone has their own ideas as to what suits them best.

@@davepeckphotography 😅 I'm pretty sure Dorset isn't too far from Essex Dave, but I'll admit I hadn't heard of this manufacturer before I was given the tripod. Here's a review of the Libec if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/bJ8IonOf5zE/w-d-xo.html

@mosfear haha! Whoops, as I hadn’t heard of it I assumed you were in the US or Aus. I’ll give it a look.

Nice review. Not a great fan of the huge form factor or video heads. I think I’ll quite enjoy a bowl head but never used one. I’ve got a review of a few different heads in the pipeline for release soon when I try a gear head.

Buy a good tripod instead of dealing with failures like many of us did. A tripod with 3-4 sections is okay when the legs are stiff and/or thick enough. There is a difference between a very stable and rigid tripod and a travel tripod. Most important: the use of a center column is immediately reducing stability and adding vibrations. When you take photography seriously and you have a camera/ lens combination of several thousands of Euro's on it, buy a good tripod. I use 3 tripods to deal with travelling and long walks but my most favorite tripod is the "heavy" Gitzo Systematic 4 series with thick legs and very good vibration reduction for very long exposures, I often bring it with travelling by plane and car. Without good legs the "good" head is worthless. Buy a good tripod once and you will buy different heads anyhow, I use a panoramic head, a ball head and a geared head. Favorite setup is the Gitzo 4 series with a FLM ball head and an RSS clamp. Never regret in 8 years the total investments of €1500.

Personally i would say the tripod is more important than the head. There is no point spending say £300 on a really good head if you have a £50 tripod. You want something strong and stable to mount everything on. I am currently on my 4th tripod and i haven't had a centre column tripod in almost 10yrs. I find the centre column types are not as rigid as the ones without a column. My current tripod is a 3 series Gitzo, although i wished i had spent the extra and got a 5 series. However with the tripod extended and the head on, it reaches around 7ft tall so i need something to stand on to look through the viewfinder. 😂

That sounds like a decent tripod Carl. Re heads. I’m not advocating spending really cheap on the legs but you could reverse your argument and say there’s no point spending £300 on legs and then spending £50 on a cheap ball and socket that won’t hold the camera still. I would buy a better head and just swap it onto different bodies. A good head will last longer than a good set of legs.
