😭 💔Mountain mischiefs destroyed her farm! Homestead Havoc 👩🏼‍🌾

  • As I settle in to my new life in the misty mountains of Northern Portugal my main focus is still on keeping warm and dry. I’m getting to grips with the heating system powered by a wood burning stove.
    Also this week an upsetting event unfolds on my friend's small farm where Free-range cows, descending from the mountains in search of sustenance, leave a trail of destruction in their wake, destroying precious trees. It's a poignant moment that sheds light on the delicate balance between traditions and livelihood.

    This vlog is 2024 not 2023 as stated at the beginning. The sound loss is due to TH-cam muting because of wrongly flagged copyright claim on paid for Epidemic Sound music!!

    We are very interested Lou. You are our eyes, ears and we do love watching your point of view. So glad you are warm and dry. And those views! They are to die for. Sorry about your friends plants but maybe it will make them stronger and fruit better in the long run. Let's hope so. 🙏 Looking forward to your next video.

    Oooh, you need too save (or get hold of some orange peels. If you thread them together to dry you can use them for firelighters AND they scent your house at the same time ! (Assuming you like the scent of oranges ) I am glad your house is warming up for you, and I would definitely enjoy a video on your accumulated wisdom on house types :)

    I am so happy to see your home become more comfortable. It looks lovely, as do the views - wow! My heart broke watching the damage to your friend's trees. Didn't you make your own vinegar using apples last year? It is so easy to make vinegar using spent fruit and sugar. I hope you will tell us about the experience that caused you to be mindful of air quality and mold presence. I rent a house with a lot of mold and it has harmed my health. It is a very serious matter! Where I live, I can't afford to move due to a wildfire (the Camp Fire of Paradise, California, on Nov. 8, 2018) that destroyed thousands of homes, creating a shortage and therefore increased housing costs.

      Sorry to hear your health has been effected by mouldy conditions. THIS is why I take it so seriously and why I am not prepared to live with it. It is not because I don't want to be cold and uncomfortable like some diva. It is a serious health risk. I hope you can find a way out of your situation. Making vinegar sounds interesting....maybe one day I'll give it a go :)

    I’d definitely be interested in a video about monitoring the air in houses. I’m obsessed enough about measuring humidity and looking out for mold in UK houses 😂
    Your experience would be great info to have Luise, before I start my own Portuguese housesitting adventure 👍🏻

    Hi there, if you have a damper on your fire, close it down 1/2 way that will restrict the air flow but keep the fire in for several hours without having to restoke.

    • @Solo50plus

      Thanks for the tip. I don't know what that is but there is a vent on the flue that turn to half way once the fire has got going. I still have to stoke though.

      All depends when the house was built, according to a lot of people. If the house was built without insulation of course you’re going to have issues in the winter, you see many TH-camrs with problems in the winter! So check the year the house was built before buying, there’s videos talking about this! Not talking from my own experience just pointing out what I have seen in videos about mold and humidity issues in houses in Portugal. Even fairly new apartment buildings sometimes don’t have insulation

    I am definitely interested in your knowledge of Portuguese housing, heating, and damp. I have just arrived in Portugal early this month, and I'm also learning to heat with wood, though I'm a good bit south of you (Coimbra District). I love your videos and am primarily interested in purchasing property in the north of Portugal, though I've rented the wonderful little cottage I'm in for a year. Looking forward to your next episode!

    Probably difficult,, to do much about the cows,,, I have a farmer that thinks it is okay to walk his cows through my garden as well "luckily I do not have much for them to destroy" I do not think I am aloud to take them, even if they are on my land 😕 (and I do not have freezer capacity)
    Might be worth it for your friend, to get hold of the farmer, and ask him if he would like to pay for the €1xx damages. In cash or meat at ½ shop prices. (He will propoly not want any of the two),, but it might just be enough for him to fix his fence, so it does not happen again in her direction 🙂

    • @Atimatimukti

      I went to the police because this is not the first time the cows destroy my fences
      In Minho, cows and horses can walk free until they get to a town. The the law says, they need to be with a Shepherd. So not only he is going to pay for 3 years of losses , he has to pay an electric fence

    • @MyPlayHouse

      @@Atimatimukti okay,, I do not like to escalate that fast. But if this has happened before,, and the massages did not sink in, it might be the only way forward. But being the stranger who comes and makes trouble for one of the locals, who have been there for generations, can quickly destroy the good neighborliness. (I only know what I saw,, there might have been happening stuff , that makes this the only way to forward)
      Best of luck with this issue.

    • @Atimatimukti

      @@MyPlayHouse it does not matter if you are not originaly from that place, the law is for everybody. I am not from Vila Verde and still, I have the right to have my farm not permanently invaded by cows. The owner does not live here, he only comes to kill them. Two years ago, the cows destroyed my mango and orange trees, ate all my apples and all my brassicas. This summer, all my corn, japonese millet and sunflowers. Enough!

    • @MyPlayHouse

      @@Atimatimukti of cause you have the right to have my farm not permanently invaded by cows. I do not know the farmer,, and he might be beyond pedagogical scope,, but done right, communication and diplomacy can really go a long way.
      "meadow fire goblet" are toxic to cows,, so letting him know that he should have an extra eye on if his cows,, if they are okay,, after they eate you entire flower bed,, and he should not sell the meet, as they have drunk the 50 liters of used leaden motor oil you had sitting for wood protection.. ( so cows that comes on to your land,, risk dying or becoming unsellable )
      I am sure your village is one where you only has to tell one person, for every one to know 🙂
