I just want to say, thank you for taking the time to make this video series. I have found it very helpful as I am not one for reading instructions. God bless you tube.
This comment is also below (from McKenzie Sunshine). It is really from ME: I didn't realize that I was on the wrong account when I posted it. Hey, I've watched all your videos on the Garmin Nuvi 2599LMTHD and found them really informative & helpful. I've just purchased one of these units that has been refurbished and I have a question for you. At about 10:20 in the above video you mention the fact that the GPS will zoom in when needed, when you're on a route. Mine zooms in to no less than 500 feet (and my big fat car is covering up several streets). Do you know if this is normal? I also have a 2797LMT and it automatically zooms in to as close as 200 feet, where you see only the road you're turning off and the one you're turning onto. This is very helpful, especially when you're at a particularly confusing intersection. So far, I love the 2599LMTHD, but I would prefer that it zoom in closer. If it can't be done, I'll still be satisfied with it but I just wanted to find out for sure. Thanks a lot!
You really should be paid by Garmin.... I tried to figure out how to use my new 2529 LMT-D using Garmin resources......tried calling them...... then I found your videos.... could we start a campaign to direct people here? Its a decade since I last had a sat nav so a lot of new things to find out but feel much more confident now. Having watched part 5 where you apologise for the potholes after a hard winter..... hate to think what it will be like after the recent snow storm has done its worst !! Many thanks from St Andrews, Scotland
+Susan Fleming Thank you very much for your kind words. Best way to help direct people to these videos if you found them helpful would be to give them a thumbs up. That will help they show up more when people look for things that match the videos. Even with the last big storm we got the roads still are not as bad yet as they were then.
Really enjoyed the reviews. I found that while using the phone feature, and calling my sister on the way to her house through the nuvi, I could hear her but she couldn't hear me all that well unless I shouted. I wonder what your experience has been with this. Also with the split screen example you showed right at the end of this video, does that come up automatically depending on the road you drive on or is it something you can select in the setting?
Very excellent Review videos! Is there any option to display the Current speed along with the Posted speed limits so we can see how much over the limit we're going? Also have you tried to use the PhantomAlert Red light and Speed Camera warnings with the MicroSD memory upgrade?
Chris St James Yes the GPs can display the current speed that you are going as well as the posted speed limit. The current speed by defualt is located in the lower left of the GPS dash board. I have not heard of PhantomAlerts before, but it does look interesting and worth looking into.

The zoom effect it in part based on how close you have your zoom set for the general map. So if you start with the zoom set to something like 200 feet away when it zooms out then back in it should zoom back to the 200 feet look. I like mine set at about 500 so that's why it looks the way it does.
Hello, thank you for all the information on this GPS, would you know if any of the other Garmin GPS systems also let you select route like this one and the 2555lmt. Again thank you!
Yvonne Bray-Bonnage As far as I know all the Garmin GPS should let you select from at least two different routes depending on if you are set for fastest time or shortest distance.
Hey, great review(s). One thing I'm trying to work out - can you set your destination by browsing the map and pointing? I can on my very old Garmin but did not see the option there. Thanks.
+Lee Smith You can, first you have to click on view map. Then touch the map once to change it to a navigation mode where you can expand the map and select the location you want to navigate to. Hope that helps.
+Wanderer001 Helps a lot. Thanks for your quick response. Essential functionality for me and I was struggling to find out. Think I'll go and get one tomorrow.
Thanks for the reply. I was not clear re my question. On my current Garmin I can go to Tasks and Plan A Trip. I service ATM machines so I may have 15 to 30 different locations or addresses to enter. I enter them and a route is calculated in the order entered. However, then I can select (using the hamburger) and choose "Optimize Route" and it recalculates the route and is sometimes half the time and distance. Is this feature available ?
This was an awesome tutorial video! I live in Anchorage, Alaska and am wondering if it has the map of Alaska on it. Again, excellent video! Makes me want to go out and buy this model. I'm looking and researching for a GPS.
It is supposed to have preloaded maps for all US states. So, i am going to assume that would included Alaska. However, I am pretty sure that would be for only major roads. Some of the smaller off the beaten path ones might not be included.
Hi Wanderer001, many thanks for the very useful tutorial videos regarding the Garmin 2599 which I have just purchased. I have a few quick questions which you may be able to kindly answer for me. Is it possible to check the percentage of power remaining in the battery? Can the battery be charged with the unit switched off and how do I know when the battery if full? The unit looks great going by the videos you have produced but I am amazed that Garmin did not supply any details with the unit! The downloaded manual is also lacking the useful things. I am sure however that I will enjoy using it! Many thanks Steve
Sorry to say there is no real way to see what percentage of power is remaining. It just shows the green little battery icon to give you an estimate of remaining battery. The battery can be charged even if the unit is off. Again there is no way to tell when it is done charging. You would need to power it one and see how far the battery icon is filled up. Not the best, but for the most part you would leave it plugged in any way.
Thanks for these videos. Just got mine and am disappointed that I no longer have the X-Wing and 'Tie Fighter' icons to choose... but I see that you do. Any idea why they wouldn't be on my device? Bought in the UK. Also... I can't find a way to add a password to the unit. Does it not really have the option to password lock!? Thanks in advance...
+Ron Festejo I am not sure why they took off the X wing and Tie fighter. Might have to do with the new movie being out and licensing issues. I have not seen a way to lock the GPS. If I find out how I will let you know.
Thanks. I'll also get in touch with Garmin to see how it works. Perhaps they can disable the satnav unit remotely if it's stolen or something. Very strange about the X-Wing omission. My son loved it on our old Garmin unit :(
+Wanderer001 Hey... I tried the sat nav out again yesterday. It got a little confusing when driving in a city where you are doubling back on yourself because the navigation line (pink/purple) that shows you where you need to go shows you the whole route, if that makes sense. I wanted to see if you knew of an option to have the navigation line show you where you need to go - so, as you're driving along the route, the pink/purple line disappears behind you?
+Ron Festejo Sorry it took some time to get back to you, I was trying to recreate the issue. The closest thing that I could get similar to what you were describing was caused by being in an area with tall building. It had issues getting a lock on the GPS so crazy directional things would happen.
can u setup navigation from a different start point then your current location, would that be something u can do in trip planner? when wanting to determine the distance between two set points? When u input multiple destinations in trip planner, will it automatically optimize the routing and select the order in which u should make the stops or it will just route you on the order you input the destinations? example is you had to make allot of delivers and want to make them in the fastest order but not familiar with location. Favorites Can u filter/search/organize them in a certain way? display by name/most used/proximity to your current location? Traffic when there is traffic present does it color code the streets on map advising of traffic or just noted on the side of screen? Does it advise you of the current MPH on the road with traffic? Thanks so much for your reviews, i watched all the videos. Can u recommend the stand that you are using? Is it the one that came with the device? Do you also have a case you use that fits device?
+ToNeSpOT Yes you can, it is done in the trip planner. It will give you an optimized route, but is dependent on the order in which you have added them. The order can be changed and then the route recalculated. Favorites are organized by distance from your current location being on top. This can not be changed. When there is traffic in route there will be an audible indication as well as a icon that appears on screen. It does not tell you about the MPH of the traffic only that there is some coming. The stand is the one that came with this GPS. I do not use a case. It lives on the stand in my car all the time.
When I select a destination and ask for an alternate route it'll show me the route I really want to take, and it'll use that route. However, it seems that I can only Save the default route, and not the alternate one that I always want to use. Can I Save the alternate route?
+Stuart Carlow When you say save what do you mean? Save like under the saved with the heart icon? If that is the case you can only save the location and by default it will try and route you using the default method, either fastest time or shortest distance.
+Wanderer001 Thanks for the explanation, Wanderer001. Is there any way I can have it remember a route that I prefer to take, rather than it's default route (given that I've already chosen the fasted time option). In other words, if I drive from point A to point B, can I tell it to remember my path from A to B and bring that up whenever I tell it to direct me to point B, starting from point A?
+Stuart Carlow There are two options you can try. First if this is a trip that you take a lot if you enable Travel History, the GPS will learn your preferred routes and use those. The other way you might be able to do what you want is under the traffic option if you turn off Optimize route from automatic to on request it might let you do what you are trying to do.
Hi there, I just bough this wonderful GPS and I had been seeing your nice and educational video, I have a question ,, how active Lane Guidance in Nuvi 2599 ??
does the screen have a dim screen feature like on the smart phone navigation so that if I am driving 300 miles til my next turn, I don't need the screen on the entire time?
I only saw you type in addresses. I never heard you say computer navigate to 401 W Kennedy boulevard, Tampa,Florida Does it actually work for such a voice command??? It was not clear as no such voice command was given. I have been able to do this with Google maps but not on my GPS
To get your 2599 to show up on a computer you will have to access the Diagnostic Tools. I made a video of this to help someone else out who was having the same issue, it can be found here: th-cam.com/video/nkcYY1sUIJY/w-d-xo.html. As for moving these icons over to another device you will need to access the GPS like it was an external hard drive then look through the folders till you find the folder for icons. Here you can copy them to the new GPS. I hope that helps.
Wanderer - I just received a 2599. According to your videos, there should be a button provided for weather, but mine doesn't show that availability. Did Garmin change that availability since your video was produced?
+Ken Sobel If you are talking about the button that can be seen from the map view, you may have to turn this option on. To do this click the wrench in the lower right of the screen. Then make sure that weather is select. I tend to turn every option on when doing videos so everyone can see what the GPS an do.
Hi ....Wanderer001 I just bought garmin nuvi 2597 Could you tell me please is there any option on this device to set sound when you are over speed limit, or you can just see on the display red color without any alert? Thanks.
I just bought this garmin 2599 LMT-D and has audio on the speed it beep's 2 seconds constantly, kinda like it no talking to much on the road and its very accurate.
Thanks for your response. I am getting a Garmin 2599 refurb from Amazon for $125 and a new Drive Smart 50LMTHD from Costco for $200 . Which is a better buy ? What has improved in the 50LMTHD ?
Hi and thanks for the informative videos. Do you have any idea of how much data gets used while its paired to my Garmin Smart Drive 50 LMTHD which is made for Costco? I'm wondering about that versus just using google navigation on my phone as it too is burning data but I wouldn't need to have spent $200 on the GPS unit. If my phone is already on am I just being redundant? It would take a long time to use up $200 worth of data running google navigation on the phone bill. I've been a Garmin user since the early 2000's and have bought at least 7 units total. I look forward to your opinion.
+Clint Price The data use would depend on what you were using it for. Weather and gas might only use kb worth of data. While looking at live traffic will eat up much more. If you ask me it is a little redundant to have a smart phone linked to a GPS when you can just look at these things on the phone itself. I hope that helps answer your questions.
I plugged in my germin its been plugged in for four hours and it still won't work . How long does it need to juice up I bought it from Costco and this is my second one .the other one won't even put the name up at least I got it this far? It has no instructions at all.
+sally Lindgren Really it should only take about 2 hours before it is usable. However if you are plugging it in at your home you will need to unplug it before you can use it. If you are plugging it into the car you could use it while plugged in.
I transport people all day and my dashboard info. is important. This is a minus on Garmin from me. I do like the display. Now it's more like heat sensed, rather than pressure.
If you are outside the coverage area the traffic system does not work as well. Garmin GPS will talk to each other and try and determine what traffic is like but it is not as good as the actual traffic services.
Thanks - I recently purchased this model about a month ago. This past weekend I took a trip from Houston to New Orleans and encountered a major traffic jam on the interstate. The GPS did not notify me of any traffic conditions, which resulted in me sitting on the freeway for over an hour without moving. The congestion occured in a remote area of the state with no exit ramps for miles. I was about 20-30 miles from the nearest city. I used the smartlink app (with the LiveTraffic app purchased) on the return trip, but was not sure if using it on the first trip would have helped me avoid the issue. Will I have to use the GPS and Google Maps on my smartphone for future trips through remote parts of interstate systems? Do you know if it uses a backup traffic system when HD Traffic is not available?
The name hamburger button is just a description of what the button looks like. Top bun middle and lower bun. In most cases it is used to access an options menu. Depending on what screen you are on is what options menu will open.
It is so annoying to search for street name first across all the states.. Street names are long and complicated often. isn't there a way i search for State and the town first then select city ?
+Neeraj Sharma Select where to, then in the upper right of the screen you should see Searching near; and by default it will be your current location. Select this option and it will let you pick from other items, such as a different city. Putting the city in this location will then let you search for your address in that location apposed to having to find it in the list.
You need to go into setting and then voices. There are only a few that will give you turn by turn directions. Make sure you have one of these selected. Should be American Jill or Samantha, for USA.
I'd avoid to waste money on these navigators (nuvi 95xx). Long response times (even if normal details level is selected), a lot of and messy features ( not so easy to use them whenever one needs them).More, waypoints editing has been another pain in the ass: After some hours I stumbled into forum where one comment suggested using app for it. My sincere advice: move to another model (or better still another branch ). I dont know many navigators ...just a couple but would switch back to my old and good MIO ... definitively!!
I just want to say, thank you for taking the time to make this video series. I have found it very helpful as I am not one for reading instructions.
God bless you tube.
+Steve Harris Happy to help. Even though I do read the instructions I would rather just watch a video and have someone explain it to me.
Well done, thanks. I was surprised that Garmin did not provide a paper use manual. Your videos helped a lot.
Great series of videos. Very helpful. Thanks
Happy to help.

I have not heard of PhantomAlerts before, but it does look interesting and worth looking into.

great video... How did you get the starwars icon???
I moved them from an old Garmin GPS. The icons are no longer available from Garmin.

Hi there, I just bough this wonderful GPS and I had been seeing your nice and educational video, I have a question ,, how active Lane Guidance in Nuvi 2599 ??
It will turn on automatically if you are navigating from point a to point b.
*Can you use this for walking, and does it rotate orientation when you rotate in place?*
You can not, and it does not.
If you put mulitiple destinations, will it prioritise ?
+benimsayfam1000 It will create a list which you can then reorganize as to which POI you want to travel to next.
Thank you. :)
does the screen have a dim screen feature like on the smart phone navigation so that if I am driving 300 miles til my next turn, I don't need the screen on the entire time?
It does not. However, you can change the screen brightness using voice commands. So you will not need to touch the screen.

Well it worked lousy for me. It barely works
Do you recommend this GPS? What does everything think about it? I'm debating if I should buy it because its on sale for $100 refurbished.
+David Ha I am very happy with it. For $100 I would be even happier.
Thank you for the videos! I just bought a refurbished unit on Amazon for $112.
I have some old icons, but no idea how to move them over. How do you do it? My 2599 does not show up on my PC.thanks

Does this GPS unit display a map and listing of multiple turns side by side similar to Ford does with their built in gps?
It does not. You either get the map or the turn by turn directions.
Hi ....Wanderer001
I just bought garmin nuvi 2597
Could you tell me please is there any option on this device to set sound when you are over speed limit, or you can just see on the display red color without any alert? Thanks.
There is no audio to let you know if you have gone over the speed limit. There is only the visual of the speed showing red.
Thank you very much for a quick replay ... a big imperfection, I thought that this device have it.
I just bought this garmin 2599 LMT-D and has audio on the speed it beep's 2 seconds constantly, kinda like it no talking to much on the road and its very accurate.
Is there a way to put a security code into nuvi. My old unit I could but I can't seem to find how on new unit
It does not have one.
Thank you for the information, but Does it comes with trackback feature and do you think the 2599 good for off-road and deserts .?
+Baheej Ibrahim It does not and this model is meant for navigation on roads.
Any recommendations for GPS systems that has Trackback feature for off road and work properly as well inside the city with a reasonable price ?
+Baheej Ibrahim Can't say that I do at this time. I will do a little digging and see what I come up with.
Wanderer001 well thank you so much !
Does the 2599 have Red Light and Speed Camera Alerts like the newer Drive Smart series from Garmin ?
It does not.
Thanks for your response. I am getting a Garmin 2599 refurb from Amazon for $125 and a new Drive Smart 50LMTHD from Costco for $200 . Which is a better buy ? What has improved in the 50LMTHD ?
I could not say for sure. I do not have the Drive Smart 50, nor do I have any experience with it. So I can not give you my impressions of it.
How do I change the dashboard view? On my nuvi 2595, I had option to change this. It had about 5 different views.
I had the same on my old 2555lmt. With the 2599lmt HD it can not be changed. I am not sure why they did this.
I transport people all day and my dashboard info. is important. This is a minus on Garmin from me. I do like the display. Now it's more like heat sensed, rather than pressure.
How does the traffic system work when outside of HD Traffic areas?
BTW - HD traffic works well for me when inside Houston's city limits...
Have you ever add a memory card mines is pretty full 95%
Yes, its not hard at all. After you add the card if it gets full when you update it will give you the options of location to down load the map update.
Wanderer001 thanks
would you please explain just what is a "hamburger button", looks like three lines on a screen and doesn't even say what they are for
The name hamburger button is just a description of what the button looks like. Top bun middle and lower bun. In most cases it is used to access an options menu. Depending on what screen you are on is what options menu will open.
+Wanderer001 Moving on to DeLorme
What address you are about to type when you put the GPS in portrait mode (123)?
123 fake st. is normally what I do.
On my 3590, I was able to adjust the speed limit when it was wrong on the GPS. Am I able to do that on the 2599? Thanks
+John Chandler No the newer models don't let you do this.
Does this have 3D buildings view in citys
+bruce e It dies not.
Often times I want to know what town Im in, is there a way to do this?
+hvac01453 Sorry to say it can not show what town you are in only the city.
I have a Garmin but it hasint zoom in or out.
Can you add memory card, and if so what is max size?
+Fun1PRN You can. Max is 64gb.
Wanderer001
Thanks!! Great review btw!!
+Fun1PRN Thank you.
my problem is that the lady stopped talking to tell me when and when to turn, how do i turn her back on
You need to go into setting and then voices. There are only a few that will give you turn by turn directions. Make sure you have one of these selected. Should be American Jill or Samantha, for USA.
16:25 mate, there was a stop sign
Kind of did a rolling stop. Not right I know but glanced over to the one side street there and no one was there.
And why after putting name you put capital letter for the first word of the reply
+Chandramohana Babu I am responding through an app on my phone. It adds the + and automatically capitalizes the first word I type.
Why when you put our name in the reply, you put +. Example if the person name Alan, You put +Alan
it's the Old way youtube reply's work.
