You should definitely check out King Diamond's Live At The Fillmore where the album Abigail was performed in its' entirety. He was in his early 60's at the time of the event, and he straight nailed it. His beautiful wife even sings backup for him. As a long-time fan (since the late 80's), I waited decades for an official live high quality dvd release from the band, and I was not disappointed one bit. Great reaction! Stay heavy and long live the King 🤘
Yeah, King Diamond (the singer and the band are both called King Diamond) was the first singer I had heard that did multiple vocals like this. I often wondered how that worked back in the day when musical editing didn't have the technology. I think I would have lost my voice after 3 songs. Who am I kidding? As a bass/baritone in high school choir, I would have torn a vocal chord trying to hit some of those high notes, lol. Andy LaRocque is always killing it on guitar for me, so I'm super psyched that you enjoy his solos! He's been with King Diamond for every album, so the skill level from one album to the next is very consistent. Story-wise, for this album, it really starts to take off with the next song "Family Ghost" so its only going to get crazier! I'm really happy that you are enjoying the album so far, and I really look forward to seeing what you think as it progresses. Thanks, Randi for yet another killer reaction and, as always, it was a ton of fun!!
I loved the language, it harks back to an age of Dungeons and Dragons in it's hey day. The horror theme deepens, and grows ever darker. The vocalist really gave his all for keeping this band different from the stereotyped expectations of metal bands of the day. It's a clever thing to have so many changes happening within the verse, and the solos. Not only keeping things interesting, but make the song feel longer than it is. Growing on me, as I wasn't exactly overwhelmed by the last songs reacted to. Yet this one, even though similar in it make up, somehow resonated better. Lovely reaction Randi, and good one King Diamond.
The next song "The Family Ghost" really gets the story going at a faster pace. I am requesting it, so hopefully she'll be able to get around to it. By the time that next song ends... You have a firm grasp on where the story is heading! There were plans for a graphic novel for the story of this album being available this month, but not sure if the pandemic is delaying it. It would also make a really good horror movie too (or a Call of Cthulhu RPG scenario to piggyback on your D&D sentiment).
BED, you gotta in know…..when I hear these songs….I can feel the next intro riff of “The Family Ghost” in my bones. Please don’t stop. The entire album is a masterpiece.
Hey there Great review KING DIAMOND does rock If you want a really good one KING DIAMOND - THEM is really good great guitars and of course the vocals are there and a creepy story.Keep Rocking 🤘
I said it before, I'll say it again, Abigail & Them are 2 of his more seminal works. 90% of his albums are outstanding. As a 17 year old high school Jr back in 1990, I was captivated by Abigail. Although Fatal Portrait dropped in '86, Abigail in '87, Them in '88 & Conspiracy the following year, I didn't get into Them until '90, w/Abigail being the 1st album for me, & those 1st four albums were nothing short of iconic. The first 2 lineups: King(vocals), Andy LaRoque-pronounced La Rock(lead/rhythm guitars 1), Michael Denner(lead/rhythm guitars 2), Timi Hansen(bass), & the infamous Mikkey Dee(drums) on Fatal Portrait & Abigail; w/Hal Patino & Pete Blakk replacing Michael & Timi on bass & guitars 2 on Them & Conspiracy respectively. After a while, you can tell who's playing which solos based on their individual styles. KD are among my top 3 metal bands
A lot of concept albums in 1987/1988... there was this (King Diamond's Abigail), Iron Maiden's Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, and while not really "concept" albums, Helloween's albums Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I and Part II kept up the "seven" thing going around at the time.
Masterpiece song :) Can’t wait till you get to Sleepless Nights and A Visit from the Dead from Conspiracy! Maybe his second best album after this one :)
Almost any song by King Diamond (written, recorded, performed) is a mini-Play. I liked your term "dramatic". Yes. So many voices, so many characters, so many transitions, so many unusual and unexpected twists and the plot. Its rare to find a real plot in texts. An album by King Diamond can be considered as literature, a story with chapters and you can actually read it and be satisfied even without listening to the actual musical arrangement.

Glad I subbed now. Saw King Diamond November 2019. He's 65 now. Hard to believe but he sounds even better live.
