I just started learning to use Blender this weekend and I've been playing around with Dragonff, would this be doable with it too or is Autodesk a requirement?

It's possible, but it requires a lot of slicing and adding a ton of material copies, like in the video for the branches. When I made the house breakable it took a long time to add a new material for some reason.

I've never used it, since this is a dff extension data I don't think it's possible. It might work with GMax.
