I really appreciate that! And yes, there’s a whole other range of expression you can get from the drums in this lower volume realm. It’s not “limiting” … just a whole different palette of options!
Teachers allways recomends relaxed playing. I believe that manipulating a drumstick requiers very, very little force - if you hold it by the fulcrum. If you hit hard with the drumsticks, you have to grab and catch the stick, else it will jump out of your hand, so you miss the rebound. Steve Smith is an example of a drummer who uses extremely little force . Drums are an instrument, and most instruments you use very little force to master, like guitar, electric bass and violin. Problem is it looks like drummers use force - but they dont. If they did, they would not be able to play a gig for 2 hours or more. This is the first video I have seen regarding this aspect, and I believe it is paramount to playing drums that you can control the amount of force you put on the sticks! And feet! Thank you Kris.
All touch, touch, touch. Learn this technique & you then have a full range of dynamics. 1 in a 100 drummers understands this. Bounce, bounce, bounce. You are learning to bounce the sticks.
Mladja Radovanovic thanks! This kit itself is just warm and low so I don't have to do much to it :-) But on the toms, I have the batter heads really loose and the resonant heads a little higher (minor thirds or something close). The snare batter is very loose with that little towel on top to get the fat dry sound. The reso is very tight and the snares are very loose. The kick batter is super loose.... just above finger tight. And the batter is quite a bit tighter.
Fantastic series. This kind of playing has so much nuance and range of expressiveness. I much prefer it.

Nice. I get a deeper appreciation for drumming as I watch your short lessons.
Great lesson! The pencil is a great way to explain this
Unique approach. I was looking at low-volume cymbals, mesh heads, etc, and I found this.

This is the best drum ever!
my ears are happy!
The human perception of volume is closely linked to pitch - so drum tuning is an important factor in low volume playing.
Low Moller is the key to quiet playing
