He started off with the type of break shot (there's a reason the game is called 14.1 - whenever there's only one ball and the cue ball left, the other fourteen are being re-racked) one encounters every rack during any game of Straight Pool (the original term for 14.1 or 14/1), what you're seeing is not the break-off first shot of a game (or match = same thing in this case) of Straight Pool.

Straight pool is usually played to 100 or 125 points and a game can take well over an hour or two. You clear off all the balls until only one object ball and the cue ball remain on the table. The other 14 balls are racked, and your turn continues until you miss or win the game.
