EASIEST Way to Rake Fallen Leaves

  • Most people use a rake to rake up the leaves and then make piles, bag the leaves, and then throw them away. That is a waste of a lot of organic matter. The easiest way to rake, shred, and bag leaves at the same time is to use a mower. I use a low powered electric mower which does a great job in picking up the leaves. You can pickup the leaves from grass, gravel, and even concrete.

    Do you use fallen leaves? What other ways do you use the leaves?

  • @toosense
    @toosense 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I usually just rake the leaves around my fruit tree, shrubs, and beds and let it serve as winter insulation. I leave grass clippings on the lawn to feed the new grass, no bag attachment. A couple years back I hired a gardener to help with my lawn maintenance. He mistakingly raked up all my leaves from my beds and even took from my compost pile, bagged it up, and threw it all away. He thought he was "cleaning up". When I got home I nearly had a heart attack! They say not to cry over spilled milk, well I actually cried over spilled dirt. Im still sad about it.

    I have done this for years even without the bag on the back in order to add organic matter into the lawn. My lawn loves it! It is a good idea to wear protective lenses especially when mowing over rocks - at the off chance a rock or stick flies out from under the mower. Better safe than sorry.

    Am so glad you made this video. I have lot of live oak on our property and gas mower didn’t do a good job. I also am of the same opinion and hoard on fallen leaves to make compost. Although I just got a leaf vacuum to bag and collect them. I still have to make piles of leaves though. Am wondering oak leaves are so small do you think electric mower is worth it??

    Thanks a bunch for video I intend on raking soon I want to avoid them blowing back onto my lawn but I will throw some into the flower bed by the house and I put all of my pine needles onto the bottom of the three huge pine trees in the yard because the needles have not all fallen off but my dog enjoys playing in the piles too...

    if I were to store some extra autumn leaves in a tote or a old Rubbermaid trashcan would I have to put holes in the bottom or on the sides for air ventilation especially if I’m not using them right away? That would be a good way for the worms to get in there too wouldn’t it?

    The batteries on that mower are too heavy for me to mow the 45 degree angle slope in my front yard. I found that the electric mowers are lightest for me, plus don't have all that exhaust that comes with gas engines. I don't mow with a bag, but I mulch with the mower, and let it go back on the ground. It does decompose. We also enjoy raking, it's good exercise, and fun for the kids to help and play in the big piles. I compost the piles, and you are correct, in my experience, the piles are 6 feet tall today, but a year from now are 'gone' back to ground level. Thank you!!!

    I like the idea of using fallen leaves in my little raised bed, and we do have one tree in our yard and there are a couple of trees in our neighbor's yard. My question is about the Kentucky coffee tree, which has leaves and pods which is toxic to children and animals. Are they also unsafe to use in my organic garden?

    Love this, sent to my hubs. With you showing how to use it on the gravel was so super helpful. I am assuming that we can use that process for limbs that fall, we live in a very windy Northern Wisconsin area. We have tons of trees that we love, well I love! Now my hubs might quit threatening every fall to cut the Oaks and Maples down. Thanks for the video!

    Growing up we used to burn them, not entirely sure why to be honest. I grew up on a farm and we grew our own produce, so I'm sure we easily could've mulched or composted with them. For us kids, though, the burning was fun because -- well, I think we were secretly little pyromaniacs.

  • @elisabetk2595
    @elisabetk2595 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    When the mower bags get full the suction drops a lot so you can't pack too much in. But, you can use two bags and a friend to run the full one to the compost pile, or just dump each full bag on a tarp so you can carry a big load all at once. Also, if you have too big a pile, add some organic alfalfa pellets from the feed store to break them down quickly.

    Don't you have to worry about whether or not the yard your getting leaves or grass from has been treated with chemicals?

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Grass, yes, you have to be careful that grass is not treated with chemicals or pesticides. I mention this here th-cam.com/video/HVWOpB8g0AM/w-d-xo.html However tree leaves if you can gather without getting grass in the process, then you don't have to worry about the bad chemicals.
