The first time I told my friends that I am furry, one of them said, “WHY WHYYY” and then left the group of friends that I somehow made, but the only other person in the group TURNED OUT TO ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN A FURRY THEMSELVES! and my other friend said he has been doing alot more research on furries, and now he is suporting me :D

The fact that the government needs to ask whether or not there should be litter boxes in schools. Proves our government doesn't know what they're doing
Talks like a fury….? You mean talks like a normal person talking about FURRY STUFF. not TALK likes a furry. If they say they are not a furry they ARE NOT! (this is coming from a furry)
@@starburstedart Not yet! I was thinking of doing that once I got around 1k subscribers. I have no idea how to run a discord server, so it is a bit intimidating.
There is actually a reason why some schools do have cat litter and it's for a much darker reason than politicians/media personalities would have you believe. Classrooms keep small amounts of litter on hand along with "go buckets" in the case of an emergency lockdown situation, such as school shootings. They're emergency toilets for really bad situations.
This is true and I found that out very early on in my research! I feel so silly not including that in the video! I'll be sure to include it in the follow-up video where I release all the interviews in full (including some not seen yet)
The funniest thing about being an anime fan since 2005 and a furry since 2012, is that people treat furries the exact same way they did anime fans in the early 2000s. All these people do is take the absolute worse things the minority of the community does and afflict it on the community as a whole. It's bad faith and has no logical bearing.
In regards to massive dildos, the answer is yes - they are not novelty items. People who are in to it literally train to be able to use those things and they do. This isn't strictly related to furries, though. It's just how humans be. Furry circles aren't homogenous, but typically they are very open minded, very accepting to LGBTQ+ and much more open about their sexuality in general. I've no doubt that contributes a lot to the overall image of furry = fetish hanging like a shadow over the whole lifestyle / 'fandom', but that's a side effect at best, rather than the foundation.
@@axolotlaristotle Well, pretty much all of my social circles consist of furries and furries are nothing if not amusing! I daresay that's the whole point of being a fur - to have fun. I've had many open and frank discussions on sexuality and associated stuff like that over the years, which has been highly educational in details you don't typically discuss with friends. Furries really do tend to be very open-minded about topics like that. Perhaps owing to the high concentration of LBTQ+ folks within their ranks, which makes topics on sexuality quite relevant.
@@axolotlaristotle I was told the litter box in the classroom was for kids who become so scared they needed to pee during a school shooter incident. Then again that could also be totally false
Gotta eat dinner now, but just from watching the first bit, I will say that the "furries force schools to install litterboxes" rumor is the only culture war conspiracy that I have heard multiple times in the wild without any kind of prompting.
I think maybe people got confused between the furry community and otherkin/therians? I could be wrong maybe? Regardless, kids don’t need any help finding weird places to go to the bathroom in school, I can recall a rumor in my old elementary school in the early 2000’s that a kid had peed in her plastic pencil box during class. No animalistic excuses, just did it. Kids are extremely strange.
I went to a furry convention with my friends who some were already furries and some were not. One of my friends came out of the experience as a furry. It changes people.
It is certainly an interesting convention. I enjoyed my time with it and I could see how it could easily let someone figure out they're a furry or want to be one
@@axolotlaristotle that is hilarious!! Yeah he's fairly well known, even outside of the Fandom bahaha. There's quite a few other furry musicians, but I feel like he's probably one of the most popular. :3
@@dinosaysrawr I commissioned Fox Amoore for a piano cover many years ago, and he did a fantastic job of it. If Cosmik is the one I'm thinking of, I didn't know he did music. The others I've not heard of, and I'll check them out.
lots of people make very biased "interviews" saying "is it about the shreksual things" etc etc. You did it perfectly, thank you so much for showing the fandom in a non-biased light! You earned a sub!
I feel like if i were to go to a furry convention (or really any convention) i would both get lost within 5 minutes in the chaos and probably be mentally crushed with introvert brain pain
It was really refreshing to see a non furry willing to learn about the fandom and go to a con. You came without bias and it’s interesting to see you learn about the community in a new light compared to many social media standpoints. For me personally being a furry helps me express myself creatively and socially. Although being a furry is “odd” or “weird” it’s helped me find online friends that I have close relationships with, which I have struggled with in the past. Being a furry though is a personal choice, someone can have an anthropomorphic character and enjoy animal characters and still not identify as a furry, and I respect them for that. It’s all choice. Anyways great video, there was a lot of effort put into this and I appreciate that.
4:42 As someone who works yearly at an anime convention, and has worked public safety and the whole baggage claim line for a weekend night rave - to my detriment because I didn't actually get to my hotel room until 3am to make sure every attendee and their things were accounted for - this is generally a thing at most cons. Glad Ruby explained it.
Yup, had no idea but then again, I am a boring bland boyo, no 'fun stuff' for me haha. Glad there are people like you that are willing to take time out of their cons to make sure others are safe.
tbh i thought it would be so ppl dont get robbed or get strangled by the bag given that in raves it is hard to see whats going on it would be easier to get away with some crimes
@@criesinvariable2493 Oh wow, I didn't think about that either though from my experience at the convention I can guarantee that something like that feels very unlikely at a furry con unless accidental.
I absolutely love the commentary on this vid! Thanks for being so respectful, I know a lot of people aren't. It was really cool seeing your first reactions to the furry fandom :D
This fandom literally has saved my life. It sounds a bit sappy or cliche, but without the fandom and the people I've met within it, I am very certain I would not be here. It's allowed me to explore myself and express myself in ways I wasn't able to before. A lot of us are not just LGBTQ but we don't have a way to express ourselves as being that. Many of my trans friends, and myself, use our characters for gender expression. For me, that's seriously helped me become more comfortable with who I am.
Awh that's so awesome! I never thought to make a connection on how Trans peeps could actually make their sona their chosen gender. That's so cool, I love it!
@@axolotlaristotle It really is a big part of my life yeah. I was able to safely explore ideas I'd had for years, seeing my characters dressed in ways I felt I couldn't. Now I'm openly nonbinary and happy with who I am. I have many friends that aren't able to do so outside the fandom for many reasons. The fandom provides a safe place for them, and helps them be themselves. Another aspect of the furry fandom, especially with VR and fursuiting, is that people are able to push past social anxiety, and become more extroverted. Many of us really don't do well in public spaces, but when we can be those characters, we shine!
In answer to your question about the oversized objects, I'd always seen them as novelty toys, but I know those within the kink community that claim that at least most of it can be used in some form or fashion. I haven't been involved enough with the kink community to confirm or deny that claim. I think that far too often the sexual nature of furry get's downplayed as if it isn't an aspect, and that's largely I suspect born out of a fear of that being used as a weapon against furries. In many ways it almost has to be used as a shield to demonstrate that while yes there are sexual elements there is far more too it. Speaking personally, having gone to FWA, I remember the moment that really struck me was the large wall dedicated to those lost as a result of COVID-19, a memorial that I think in a strange way was reassuring that there was a community in place that did what it could to watch out and remember those who had made it what it was. I remember the conversations being mainly focused on consent and appropriate behavior which compared to other cons I have been to showed very little interest outside of "Please don't touch the cosplayer" signs occasionally, where as nearly every furry convention I've attended there's been lanyard colors, and 1000 other elements in place to help establish boundaries. It was refreshing.
Wow yeah. That's tragically wholesome. I mean I've never heard of a community doing that at conventions it really feels like the furry community is a tight knit group and I am glad that I went (will probably go again in the future tbh). And yes, I agree about the consent thing. It is such an important aspect of events with massive amounts of people that I don't know why it's a rarity instead of the norm.
Woah! Your content is so underrated it's crazy! After I watched your video I honestly assumed you would've had at least 200k subs! Amazing content, I thouroughly enjoyed it! Thank you for being so respectful about the furry community, I know it means alot to alot of people!
This comment meant so much to me, like thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and no problem the community was incredibly kind there was no reason to be disrespectful at all.
Thank you for coming into this so open minded ^-^ I love seeing more people explore the fandom a bit for themselves and get to see that at it's core, the furry fandom is just a group of incredibly friendly and creative people, who happen to love anthro art. Videos like this one really do help to strike down some of the stereotypes we as a community have to deal with and it's always appreciated! Keep on doing what you do, your production value is awesome for such a small channel, and I can tell you will be huge one day! ^-^
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only not completely left leaning furry. Edit: those protesters outside the convention look ridiculous!!! Do they think they’re going to stop us from having fun?
I know a few right leaning furries. Though yeah, mostly left. There are many reasons to lean left or right. Certainly there's currently an intersection between right leaning groups and anti LGBT (especially anti trans) groups, and I imagine that's creating a bit of a filter, and the effects of that filter are probably being amplified by friend groups often sharing politics. But there are biggots on both sides and the community is decentralised so everyone is welcome if they don't suck.
@@docopoper Yeah I found there was a Naz1 furry that got a con cancelled a while ago when doing research. It amuses me. They would not hesitate to Roblox him once they get in power lol, you'd think even if it's for the most selfish reason of self-preservation that he would stop being a naz1. but no, I guess hatred is that strong.
@@docopoper Look, if you actually want to stop the divide on the furry fandom... the first step is NOT to care about what happens on each other´s households or what they think inside their heads. Furry is a hobby, not an orientation, not an ideology, not a club with x requirements... be yourself and thats pretty much theres to furry.
I used to hate on furries, and then I realised I might’ve been a furry since I was 3, which was LIGHTYEARS away from the time I found out what the heck was a furry, so I did some more research and found that the vast majority of furries was actually pretty kind Moral of the story is: *You might’ve been a furry long before you even heard of the fandom*
This was sorta me too 😭 Hating furries, started seeing more videos of furries, starting adopting “as long as it’s not hurting anyone”, decided it looks fun. Anyways I spent $850 on a partial recently 😭
I was a bit weirded out by the one person saying they wanted to see more politically active and radical people get involved in the fandom. When I'm looking at drawings of cute cartoon animals, the last thought in my mind is "we need to politicize this".
I can understand that but on the other hand, furries have always been a target of the culture war (the whole Joe Rogan thing and Politicians making bills against them thing. And the Chlorine attack a few years ago) It's sort of like. They didn't choose to be political, politics were thrust upon them.
@@axolotlaristotle This exactly, but additionally and speaking as a furry? It's as you said in the video: A good majority of the fandom is LGBTQ+ in some shape or form. There are multiple studies out there that have been done on the topic (I'd recommend looking up FurScience if you're curious, they've done several interesting studies on this) and it's been determined that only about one third of the community is straight. It's predominantly been that way since the fandom's inception back in the 80s. The furry fandom is a very accepting community not only for those who are queer, but an abundance of other minorites (POC, disabled people, neurodivergent people, etc) because it's largely a community that above all else is based on the acceptance of what is considered as nonconventional. Being a furry is often considered as a nonconventional interest and all of those minority groups are wrongfully considered as "nonconventional" in the eyes of a lot of people, and when given how much scrutiny all of those groups face politically due to that? It's difficult to separate the fandom from politics or turn a blind eye to that scrutiny without fundamentally going against the foundations of what the fandom itself was built on, both because of the abundance of minorities who are furries and because of what many people (myself included) would argue is the very nature of being a furry itself. Sure, liking cute cartoon animals is definitely a part of it, but I'd argue dismissing being a furry as exclusively that is missing a large part of the whole picture for a lot of people. People have definitely tried to separate it, but ultimately in my experience it's rarely perceived well by the majority of the fandom save for those within more centrist or right-leaning circles.
I saw it as more of "I want to see us be more politically active and not passive because the far-right is doing their best to slander us all the freaking time, and we need to counter that shit in our normal lives because it matters". I didn't see it as "Let's politicize Funny Animal characters". The ACAB sticker was just our usual Furry humour.
Okay, so, first off, thank you so much for being kind and respectful to our community and not following the fake rumors about us. Second, I am extremely jealous that you got to go because I don’t hold the patience to wait until December to go.
As a moderate right leaning furry It appalls me that there's bad apples on my side that would do bad things to people who aren't doing anything wrong but being themselves. I know pretty much all factions have their fair share of bad apples. but all in all, let people be who they want to be as long as they aren't hurting anyone in the process. I love how actually welcoming this community is and I just wanted to say thank you. regardless of what political viewpoints we have. Thank you all very much for welcoming me into the community with open arms.
Consenting adults are entitled to weird stuff! So long as it's not harming someone; grown adults should be able to be as goofy and silly as they want, gotta find your joy and shenanigans! Might not be everyone's cup of tea but it is for someone else and it's just nice that people find a community where they can enjoy themselves make friends find love even, have fun and express themselves!
This video was absolutely awesome! I'm glad it was on my recommended! Thank you so much for keeping an open mind and treating the community with respect. Obviously there are always going to be bad people who take things too far in any space furry or not (and we don't claim those bad ones / we work hard to fight actual abusers), but as a whole I'm glad you got to see it's mostly just people having fun being/having cute animal characters. I also LOVE seeing how much we raise each year for the charities!
The axolotl Aristotle character is a brand character used to grab attention A furry is someone who is infatuated with anthropomorphic animals If he's not interested in anthropomorphic animals then he's not a furry

Amazing video. I have been noticing a lot of these types of videos. These videos do warm my heart and I don't even care if you're just getting content to get more views (even tho I know you are most likely not doing it just for views, but I know some of it is for that) Honestly very more open minded than the others still. Great job on the video. Thanks for "shedding" some light for our fandom ^^
To be truthful it was one of those, 'hey I'm hearing about this in the news and social media things' which while that isn't a new way to make content, being a video essayist, I know my stuff will be incredibly late to the party. So, in addition to it being a 'relevant' topic, I only pick the relevant ones that interest me because if I am devoting at least a month or more to it I want to actually be engaged. And in this case, I thought going to the convention would be fun! And it was!
Speaking of furries being political... Pepper Coyote has supported a Russian think tank that supports the invasion of Ukraine (CPIUSA)... It's neat you got to interview someone so noteworthy (his music is well known) but the fandom has kind of turned against him since then. Really awesome video though! I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and it's always cool to see a "normie"'s reaction to all the furry stuff!
I don't think its good to take part in just something so wrong ukraine must be free all nations should be allowed to live without fear of being destroyed etc as long as the following the good laws to protect them and humanity etc so no war criminal actions & horrible acts
Eww... I *really* hope this is just a rumour and isn't true. I like Pepper, and he always seemed like such a cool guy. Supporting anything that backs Putin is just fucking sad.
I used to be a furry, and I still think the fandom is great and a fun place to hang around. However, I will say that your experience of being a furry will greatly differ if you are straight. Unfortunately, straights are treated like dirt by a lot of furries (not every furry, but many of them in my personal experience). I ended up leaving because I felt like I wasn't welcome, just because I'm straight. Now, I just consider myself an anthro enthusiast, but I still interact with the community. I just personally don't want to label myself as something that doesn't support me just because I am not LGBTQ+. Furries definitely do not deserve the extended amounts of hate that they receive. They are, for the most part, a wholesome community. They don't cause any harm to anyone, so I don't get why people have a problem with them. As for the litter box thing, I want to say that that isn't even furry, and yet it is of course labeled as such. Furry is a fan of anthro animals, and nothing more. They do not think they are animals or use a litter box. If a person believes they are an animal, that is called "otherkin." It is 100% different than furry. Furry and Otherkin are NOT the same thing, but it IS possible to be both.
Jeez I'm sorry you had to deal with that.. but well I support your choice in gender preferences in my opinion you don't need to be gay bi or any of the above to be a furry! Just be you and enjoy your life as you see fit! ^^
I'm sorry you encountered rudeness just because you're straight. I haven't seen much of that in my time in the Fandom, and I've been in for many years. Most LGBTQ+ people don't behave like assholes to straights, we know better, having been on the receiving end of abuse from the straight crowd.
Hey sorry you had a bad experience with some people in the fandom, but there’s so many of us who could care less ab sexuality. As long as you’re accepting of others we’ll be accepting of you

I'm glad you had a good time; I was at this con and I remember there were relatively few issues compared to what you'd see at other large cons or even previous years (the line situation used to be so much worse) It really is just great to be able to spend a few days in the safe, judgement-free zone a furry convention creates, whether or not you're actively trying to "blend in", though clearly you won't be having that problem in the future :P I've seen a few videos like this and while for some, the main theme is making jokes of the attendees, this one was a refreshing, honest look in what a furry con has to offer, treating the people as people with stories to tell and not as props, very refreshing to see; this was a great video and I will definitely stick around for more in the future!
Yeah! I'd rather show things as they are and not try and dunk on people unjustifiably for clout (see some other lefty video essayists as of late). I just wouldn't feel right doing that
Excellent video, very well put together and informative. Its always good to see someone shedding a positive light on the fandom instead of just trolling and perpetuating stereotypes.
I don't know if your question was already answered but the reason some cons do not allow bags is for safety reasons. Weapons and drugs can easily be stored in them and if some cons don't have enough security, it's expensive to hire alot of security for hundreds if not thousands of people. So they opt for a no bag rule to work with their already sparse security forces. I go to a local anime convention and they have water coolers in the rave. So they also have a no bag rule and a security guard at it just to ensure no one goes around spiking stuff. There's always a risk of these kinds of people at all kinds of events even outside of conventions. Spiking the water cooler at a con in a rave would be pretty bad. Furry cons are also targets of harassment and the fandom is also HUGELY LGBTQIA+ like around 80% is LGBTQIA+. So you can imagine that some cons have alot of worries. One even had some dude try to gas it. It depends on the con though. Like I said I first encountered it at an anime con so I automatically assumed the no bag rule was normal at all cons. But the small local furry con I attended allowed bags. I guess the size of the con and attendees require these rules because it's harder to catch or find perpetrators at these massive ones. Lmao nevermind they explained it immediately after lmao. Really great vid though!

To add onto the talk about harassment, there was something that happened in Vancoufur 2023 just a bit ago. Someone called in a bomb threat in an attempt to SWAT the convention. Thankfully the police found nothing and no one was hurt. The whole convention took it pretty well though, with making badges that said "I survived Vancoufur 2023."

Like hentai? Ew get away from me.” When yes, there are people who like that kind of stuff, but theres sfw parts too. Same experience with furries.
Heck, being a Sci-Fi fan wasn't cool at one time, too, and I remember *those* days with less than fondness. To me, Furry is pretty much the same: a niche interest that's at base harmless and fun. I've been a Furry (well, a dragon) since I was a teenager, and I'm 55, now.

Ok so the reason they don't allow bags goes back to mff 2014 when there was a chlorine gas attack at mff so they stopped allowing bags for security reasons and as not to have to search guests and attendees
Mmmmmm many other people (my editor included) told me it was because people could sneak in the dr8gs, get accidentally strangled, and also have it stolen. I did mention the gas attack later in the video but I don't think that would be the reason why since no one checks bags anywhere else at the con and the last attack happened in a random stairwell of the hotel.

Thank you for sharing, I think the community is actually incredibly wholesome. Your explanation is the perfect showing of that!

Haha thanks, I had a blast. Was not hard to be respectful, the majority of people there were incredibly nice!
@@arvurebantra7639 Fantastic!
I mean, there are other uses too, like decorations. Plus I'd much rather cuddle up with a massive D than a daki to fall asleep.

Sometimes I feel like I’m the only not completely left leaning furry. Edit: those protesters outside the convention look ridiculous!!! Do they think they’re going to stop us from having fun?
That was their intention yes.

And the Chlorine attack a few years ago)
It's sort of like.
@@Solarmyr Very well-articulated. this was an interesting and informative read.
I saw it as more of "I want to see us be more politically active and not passive because the far-right is doing their best to slander us all the freaking time, and we need to counter that shit in our normal lives because it matters". I'm a furry myself and your really kind as I watched the entire video being a furry is not a bad thing when I first look at the furry community this was a couple years ago I thought furrys was weird and was stupid but thing has changed sense then and now I'm a furry myself being a part of the Fandom is a nice place to be and be yourself and it's also a good place for creativity and much more one thing i know is to never let anyone get in your way and be yourself never let anyone push you down and never be scared to be yourself and be you ❤.
I'm glad you feel that way! It's always good to be part of a community that is willing to accept people from all walks of life
Amazing video. I have been noticing a lot of these types of videos. These videos do warm my heart and I don't even care if you're just getting content to get more views (even tho I know you are most likely not doing it just for views, but I know some of it is for that)
Honestly very more open minded than the others still.
Hrm. If that's true (as I don't really know him or his takes so I can't say for sure) that isn't great. Ideally his mind could be changed.
As long as you’re accepting of others we’ll be accepting of you
Im actually planning on going to one soon. Glad you had a blast there!

@@pineapplephill7934 That is good for you, but I don't see how that concerns me, specifically…
I'm glad you had a good time; I was at this con and I remember there were relatively few issues compared to what you'd see at other large cons or even previous years (the line situation used to be so much worse)
It really is just great to be able to spend a few days in the safe, judgement-free zone a furry convention creates, whether or not you're actively trying to "blend in", though clearly you won't be having that problem in the future :P
I've seen a few videos like this and while for some, the main theme is making jokes of the attendees, this one was a refreshing, honest look in what a furry con has to offer, treating the people as people with stories to tell and not as props, very refreshing to see; this was a great video and I will definitely stick around for more in the future!
Yeah! I'd rather show things as they are and not try and dunk on people unjustifiably for clout (see some other lefty video essayists as of late). I just wouldn't feel right doing that
Thank you for being so respectful to our fandom!
Excellent video, very well put together and informative. Its always good to see someone shedding a positive light on the fandom instead of just trolling and perpetuating stereotypes.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah idk why people get so mad at furries
LMAO I was about to say Ruby told me, but you saw it. Thanks for the watch and explanation I appreciate it!

Damn that's disgusting. What is the law/penalty around swatting in Canada?
@@axolotlaristotle Honestly, i'm not sure. the difficult thing about it is that most swatting things use throwaway numbers and other methods to make it harder to trace back to the caller.

Get out of there, dont get groomed like I did. That fandom is NOT safe for minors. It is sexual in nature.
I like furries, and i don’t want to see anyone who likes anime or anything like that hating on furries, because like 2010 liking anime was genuinely not cool, that was something you wouldnt tell people because they would be like “oh so like tentacle girls? Like hentai? Ew get away from me.” When yes, there are people who like that kind of stuff, but theres sfw parts too. Same experience with furries.
Heck, being a Sci-Fi fan wasn't cool at one time, too, and I remember *those* days with less than fondness. To me, Furry is pretty much the same: a niche interest that's at base harmless and fun. I've been a Furry (well, a dragon) since I was a teenager, and I'm 55, now.

I’m kidding, if you want to be a furry, that’s fine, if not, that’s also fine
Ok so the reason they don't allow bags goes back to mff 2014 when there was a chlorine gas attack at mff so they stopped allowing bags for security reasons and as not to have to search guests and attendees
Mmmmmm many other people (my editor included) told me it was because people could sneak in the dr8gs, get accidentally strangled, and also have it stolen. I did mention the gas attack later in the video but I don't think that would be the reason why since no one checks bags anywhere else at the con and the last attack happened in a random stairwell of the hotel.
