  • In this video, knife maker Walter Sorrells demonstrates the making of what you might call a tribute knife -- a skinning/hunting/pack knife inspired by acclaimed bladesmith Jerry Fisk's Sendero model.

    Minus the time it takes you to normalize, heat treat and temper... how long did it take you to make this knife? It’s beautiful

    Just curious why you don’t clean up your bevels before gluing your scales on. Don’t you have to dip your scales in the water to cool as you’re finishing your bevels ? I only use wood scales and would hate to be over soaking them. Nice video still. I’ve always loved your channel. I’ve learned so much from you. Thanks 👍👍👍

    If you only harden the blade, and not the tang, does that create an area where the blade is most likely to snap? Where hard meets soft?

    • @mcphailsa5810
      @mcphailsa5810 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Some form of stress riser would normally be necessary for a weak spot to be created between hard and soft areas of the steel (blade to tang junction in this case). This is not directly caused by the difference in physical crystalline structure of the two areas, but if a stress riser already exists in this area it can be worsened by this difference in structure. Stress risers in this area are generally a result of a “square” joint between the blade and the tang. To help reduce the likelihood of a crack forming at this location when the blade is quenched, it is best to radius this joint as much as possible. In other words, if the design allows, create an arc of as large a radius as possible when forming the junction between the blade and the tang. The ability to do this, often depends upon the material to be used for the handle and or finger guard if so equipped.
