    Once a year I buy 12 pairs of the same socks. They were the same socks I bought last year. When one gets a hole I throw it out. There’s always another one to be a pair. This has really simplified my life. I can get dressed in the dark.

    What i have found incredibly helpful is i got a rather nice basket for donations. I keep it by the front door, lined with a trash bag. So now I'm aware of things and my emotions around those things. When something no longer serves me, it goes into the basket. This makes decluttering a more attractive daily concept, i think.

    I feel like the 90day rule - getting rid of stuff you haven't used in 90 days - should not apply for seasonal clothing. This might cause probelms in winter ❄️😅

    • @edsouth5415
      @edsouth5415 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The idea of the 90 day rule is that it is 180 days all up. So it includes all seasons. These rules aren’t 100% some things you do use every now and then and you still get rid of it. Then some things you don’t use often (like thermals for me) but when you need them you need them so you don’t get rid of it

      I think common exceptions should be Emergency Medical kits ,Tools , seasonal important clothes , kitchen items which are great when guests come . Some items can be in storage but it's needed just not when or where .

    Projects - My constant anxiety here is spending money then doing a job poorly. I am not a carpenter!
    Cleaning - ROOMBA! Love it. I have it run each day while I'm at work. This does two things: I am forced to pick up anything on the floor each night, and the amount of dust this thing can find is amazing.
    Storage - Putting large, simple shelves in my utility garage (lawn mower, etc.) was a game changer. 2x4s and plywood. Very easy because as long as its level, you are good. Doesn't have to be pretty.
    Capsule wardrobe - Black, various greys, white. I can dress in the dark (often do because I get up an hour before everyone else, 4:30 a.m. #teacherlife).

    2) X amount of time rule, get rid of unused/no longer used items
    3) less, but better (quality)
    4) have a plan, build systems to stick with new habits you're creating
    5) complete your projects around the house
    6) use storage (find/make a place for everything so its simole to clean up)

    At first, I thought I didn't have a system for decluttering as I'm in the early stages. On a second watch, I realized that my two-week experiments were a system. This is how it works: I'll try a rule for two weeks and record the results in my reflection at the end of that period. Sometimes I keep the rule. Other times, I change the rule or just try a different focus.

    I also tend to look at the price of stuff. If it’s worth selling (the time expended with taking pictures, posting it, dealing with people and messages, meeting somewhere, the fuel, any other factors) then sell it. Another thing I add on to that is, after I make the profit (deduct all the things from above, make sure to include your time because your time is valuable) then I compare that to working. I’m lucky that I make good money, but it it’s something that will take me less than an hour or two of working, it’s just not worth it, either donate it (and get the good karma) or just let it go.

    i'm recently divorced and after finally getting all my ex's crap out of my house I realized just how much nicer it was to be rid of that stuff and actually have space again. I recently did part of the wardrobe "hack". My work uniforms are gray pants/shorts with black polo style shirts. I picked up a 20 pack of black socks. My off day outfit is black shorts and solid gray shirts. I typically work a little late on Friday, so I just do 1 load of laundry Friday evening when I get home and my laundry is done for the week. I haven't put anything away in my closet for about 3 months now. I hang and fold out of the dryer and leave it in the laundry room. I figure anything still in my closet at this point can go, as I haven't worn it in atleast 3 months.

  • @Wendathena
    @Wendathena ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Love shelving and improvements, and the messy hair too! But the first question is, for stuff you are getting rid of, how did the stuff get there in the first place? Minimalism on the front end (like not buying or collecting anything) is probably the biggest factor in not having a lot of clutter. I think you might have OCD, as do I. My husband likes to keep everything "just in case" but having stuff everywhere makes me anxious, and having it all clean and organized makes me feel like my life is in control. I will get rid of stuff and then he will decide he needed that thing I just got rid of for repairing something, for a Halloween costume, or because he just needed it. So then I will get in big trouble from him for giving the item away. (It actually happens to me too that I realized I could use the thing, but then I rationalize that I'd rather buy a new one than have the old one around cluttering up my space for 10 years just "in case" I needed it).

    • @Wendathena

      Unless you live alone, it is important to not declutter things that a housemate might want to keep. I know the challenge (I used to live with a hoarder) but respect needs to go both ways. Maybe he needs to rent a storage unit somewhere if he won't declutter?

    • @Wendathena
      @Wendathena ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SHines-qk9qj Very good point and I love the idea of renting a storage unit to get the stuff out of the house/garage, although that would challenge my frugality, as the cost of renting the unit might be the same in the long run as what it would cost to replace the item if you actually gave it away! I am often doing that calculation in my head.

    Our son has a similar method with clothing--he wears ONLY black. Black slacks and jeans, polos, tee-shirts, shoes--all black, all black. He started it several years ago as a statement that he was "mourning" for the state of U.S. politics. He continues it now because he likes the simplicity of it.

      Lol, how cute. Of course, I guess your son could be a lot older than I originally pictured. But still, I like him ;)

      Awesome idea, I've actually thought of doing this myself and it reminds me of being a teenager, I only wore black. 😊

    I procrastinate soooo often 😭, it's with things that i need to do but don't like to do, haven't found a solution yet, just the old " JUST DO IT AND BE DONE WITH IT" 🤣, this is what my Mom always tells me 😉

    I don't fold laundry that doesn't need to be folded. Rags, towels underwear etc. I just put them in bins. If it needs to be folded, like shirts and pants, I just quickly put them on hangers. Saves much time. I have as few things as possible.

    It's hard for me to be clutter free because I'm a stay at home Mom and make money in selling curb side pick ups and thrift store finds. I thrift and flip items as a source of income.

    Pay 1-800 Got Junk,
    I am 80, living in Queretaro since 2021. I remember A&P, but Walmart shut down all the Mom and Pop stores.
    I would tell people to read Sam Walton life. Leave the USA, stop killing each other, and open your online business.
    I have shopped on line for decades for groceries etc. to be delivered to my home, and I love it.
    I was raised by adopted great grandparents, when my married parents were not responsible, and GG died at 106, and she trained me very well on paying. my rent, bills etc, and health issues.
    Sabrotones is a wheat based skins, that tasted just like pork skins, which I do not eat pork. I am 6 months stocked up on groceries and cash when the shtf. I have a daily limit on my bank account, and my saving is locked. I can just the limits, and my bank will not pay out of my area purchases. They hold purchases payouts for 4 days, so I let my rent come out 3 days early as a nice tenant to nice landlords in Queretaro. My rent includes everything and a maid.
