So glad a search for Deleuze led me to your channel, and found this video. I started my TH-cam frag channel wanting to treat perfume as art, but have since come to a tentative conclusion that perfumery can’t- at least at the moment -be fine art, as opposed to the decorative art that it has traditionally been considered as. It can’t be art because 1) for something to be art, there must be an artist who will posit a piece as such, and (that is the case since Impressionism) and 2) as Salmon suggested, perfumes are produced by corporations. Art as it has been recognized either eradicates or hides its interest in money; while perfumes are, well, products. A commodity. (I should add that that doesn’t make it a lesser thing.) Discussing things like this could be so tedious because most people can’t regard fragrances beyond the terms imposed by the hobbyism of their interest. So that you’d get people saying “oh but perfume X & Y are art to me”, missing the point of questioning entirely.
Always love when art meets philosophy - enjoyed the exploration of the aesthetics of scent and the ways we interact non-linguisticly with others and the environment
I wonder if you can learn things by smell. I think the brain can be trained to do this. I am thinking of braille, which we use to read by touch. Can we learn to read by smell if somebody could teach us fragrances. They would have to flow somehow in a direction with a sequence. Maybe that's why Kant had a problem with it, that it cannot be organized...yet. So fragrances now seem more like an entertainment art, but can we learn from them too, other than be entertained by them? Thank you three for another great episode!
Your questions taken as points make sense to me. I’ve been thinking that perfume (as opposed to odors/scents-let’s say, “olfactory data” ) is a form of language itself, but a language that does not require the unidirectionality of time, and one that (therefore?) can convey information other than the prosaic kind. But I may have misinterpreted what you meant exactly by the word “read”.
Great series! Thanks for doing these interviews. I work in machine learning and am now trying to imagine how I could build a model that describes scents based on the chemical composition, or the other way around. Very interesting!
