    What I love about Daniel's demos is that its more about creating melodies and showing ideas which you can create on a synth , unlike other peole who just keep on aimless knob twisting which devprives you from being inspired of what a synth can do

    • @thirfytash7286
      @thirfytash7286 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The knob twisting tells me what a synth can actually do, the playing on the other hand just shows me what the player can do, but that's just me :)

    I like watching Daniel's videos. He would have a blast demoing a MIDI cable and I would probably get that one. I think this thing will sell for people that want to get some old-school moog into their sound with a self-contained unit. Like if a band wants to add synth basslines/leads/fills, guitar people's studios or for a live looper person, w/e. IMO, it's the right price for a moog keyboard and it does sound nice. As for me, I think DF had even more fun with grandma and the matriarch, so I would make the money jump and roll with granny before I got this little beast.

    I’m glad moog still has plans for its subsequent technology. I hope those plans include a subsequent 44 with 1 more oscillator, lfo, envelope, and stereo filter from the voyager. They haven’t made anything to fill the “flagship mono” gap when they gave the voyager the boot.

    Opinion on this synth seems to be pretty split. Personally, I like it. I’ve wanted a Sub Phatty for a while and I’ve played one many times. They’re really well built, intuitive, and sound great. This takes that, adds duo mode, harder distortion, and more head room. Seems like a win from my point of view but I understand the criticisms. The only thing I wish it had is the second LFO from the Sub37, or at least the same features of the 37s LFO for the one on board. That is, the extra mod buses and sources/destinations. It would add a lot of modulation for not a lot of extra money or space. That said, I’ll still probably get it. There really is some magic in Moog’s synths that you have to hear in person.

    Damn...Dave makes the 25 sing! I can’t make up my mind now. The 25 and 37 have a buzzy modern quality that also manage the unmistakable Moog sound, where as the Grandmother sounds more vintage with brighter tone. I can’t decide. I think I prefer the edgier sound of the 25/37 but the Grandma has the reverb, arp and sequencer for slightly more than the Subsequent 25. I would have bought any of these by now but I’m left confused on what is the best sound & best value for the price. I can only have one of them for a while. 🤷‍♂️

    • @nicholasloyacona4560
      @nicholasloyacona4560 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you ever end up with a Moog? If so, share your story a bit please? I’m having a difficult time choosing between the Subsequent 25 & grandmother. I’m a bass player in a funk/jam/rock band and would love a mono synth for some extra flavor. I know I would be satisfied with either. 25 is probably more gig friendly, but I’m highly interested into going down the (semi)-modular road…and I’m sure the GM will be able to provide the bass I need. I also feel that the GM will be manageable for my gig needs with some notes/prep, because it will be used sparingly being that I’m the bass player and we are only a trio.

    Any idea if patches created on the 37 will map on to the 25? Would be great to be able to program on the big boy and bring this one out for performance. Of course not all would work, but even if a large subset would it could really be nice.

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Glen. The Subsequent 37 is an upgraded Sub 37. The Subsequent 25 is an upgraded Sub Phatty. The architecture of the 25 and 37 have always been different such that there isn't a way to load a preset from one into the other. But... you certainly could do it by hand, matching the parameters that *are* found on both models.

  • @rars0n
    @rars0n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I'm so freaking torn on this synth. For a little more money, there's the Grandmother, which sounds awesome and has a layout that I really like a lot. It's also got the arp, sequencer, and spring reverb. At the same time, the spring reverb to me seems a little bit one-dimensional. That is, you get that spring reverb sound, and the ability to mix it dry or wet, and that's about it. And I'm sure the sequencer is nowhere near as comprehensive as that on the Subsequent 37. But then again, the Grandmother is actually a really cool option for feeding audio through, and it's got that LFO that can be used as a third oscillator, and I love hardware that offers that kind of flexibility.
    But man, the Subsequent sounds so much more raw and unapologetic. I love it. It can do smooth, creamy vintage sounds just fine, but it can also go to 11 or even more. And it does so in a way that sounds like a Moog. If only the 25 had the sequencer, or at least an arp, I think I'd buy it immediately, because I really like the implementation on the 37. It gives it that extra edge. I can live without the reverb, since I'm pretty sure I'd prefer the variety of settings an external effect gives me (love that you used the Source Audio Nemesis, great stuff), but it's kinda cool that the Grandmother has it there to throw in on a whim, if for no other reason than ease of experimentation.
    Having said all that... yes, the sequencer and arp are really what is throwing me for a loop. I love the styling of the Grandmother, its sounds, and the semi-modular capabilities. But I like this synth engine better. Am I willing to make the compromise of fewer keys and knobs, and forego the Grandmother experience, to go with the 25? Without the arp and sequencer? Argh, I can't decide! The Grandmother is absolutely an instant classic. But man, the duo mode on the Sub is awesome. Lots of people want to push one over the other, but I think they're both great synths and it's awesome that we have the opportunity to buy them!

      What'd you end up going with?

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joelsilva6689 I still haven't decided (it's a lot of money for me either way!). But I will say this: the sequencer on the Subsequent 37 is pretty awesome, albeit to get maximum use out of it, you need to use the computer software. That said, that's kind of the thing with the Sub 37/25, they're more "modern" synths that benefit from having the power of that software.
      The Grandmother is the better synth if you want a stand-alone, hands on synth and I love the semi-modular qualities, but I'd more than likely end up sequencing it using something other than the on-board sequencer. I'd say the same thing about the spring reverb.
      Ultimately I think the Sub 25 will be the more interesting synth for me, because it's not dead set on recreating a classic Moog sound. Both sound phenomenal, don't get me wrong, but I think I already have Grandmother territory covered with the Model D and other effects. Hence, the Sub 25 would be the winner, if only it had at least a few more keys and that sequencer. Really, it's the sequencer that kills the 25 for me. If it had it, I'd probably have already bought it by now.
      I will likely either just save up more to get the 37, or consider a different synth altogether (maybe an Argon8 or Hydrasynth or something like that). But honestly, if the 25 or Grandmother suits your needs, I think either one of them are pretty great for the price (I feel the 37 is a bit too expensive).

      @joelsilva6689 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rars0n I completely agree with you. I was in the same predicament as you, my friend. I ended up going with the Subsequent 25 and a Keystep 37 to get the extra keys, sequencer and arp. I was able to get all the features I wanted and stay just under the $1000 mark. I'm very much in love.

    It sounds nice, but, it's a bit pricey for a 1 lfo/mod bus synth with only 25 keys and no arpeggiator or sequencer. Also, some of the functions inside the editor could have had a dedicated button. There is space for some of these under each envelope pot - of course that would require a re-design of the board, something that they have partly avoided. It's a shame that this synth is priced so close to the Subs37 , yet, it differs so much in terms of interface design and important modulation features.

I'm just basing my opinion on the videos I've seen so far on the sub 25 and to me it doesn't sound as alive as the videos I've seen of the subphatty (and also playing with my subphatty) , maybe it's the change in headroom? Even once they lowered it, after a few years, it was still $799 and stayed that way until a few months ago. No one complained about its price all this time, but now Moog releases an updated version with duophony, better and grittier distortion, and more headroom for smoother sounds, at $150 less than the price of the original, and all of a sudden it’s exorbitantly priced.
