STUNG by a Bulldog Ant!

  • Mark Vins is rolling up his sleeve to enter the sting zone with the dreaded Bulldog Ant!
    Since the Bullet Ant sting no other insect has been requested more for a sting test than Australia’s Bulldog Ant, aka jumping jack ant. Armed with massive jaws and a stinger filled with formic acid, these ants attack in swarms and are avoided at all costs by locals throughout Australia. Tales of their stings are legendary and reach far from the golden coasts of OZ.
    Will this jumping terror live up to the hype or fall down the ranks of the insect sting pain index?

      I live in Perth (where this video was shot) and while in the urban areas we never see them, I've seen a few when I was camping. It always astounded me how fast they move for their size, a good half a meter a second I'd say. The ones I saw never jumped and I'm pretty sure only a select few can but you can easily tell how super soldier esque they are compared to typical ants regardless. They usually hunt alone too, basically the epitome of quality over quantity

    • @dgmt1

    Fantastic video, Bull Ants are quite the amazing power houses of the ant kingdom. Also as someone who is an antkeeper in Aus I just wanted to clarify that this was a colony of Myrmecia Gratiosa (judging by size/colors), video identified these as Myrmecia Brevinoda which are larger and a dark maroon color. Nonetheless worthy specimens for a sting test 😂

    • @SofiThePyro
      @SofiThePyro ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also Myrmecia Brevinoda is only found in the eastern states and he said they were near Perth in WA 😅 Gratiosa is mainly found in WA though so I'm 100% with you! Fascinating creatures, I stopped to look at a nest but moved (quickly) away when I realised the ground where I was standing was covered in bull ants haha

      Can i ask you two questions?: what is the most venomous type of bull ant?
      And what is the biggest type of bull ant?
      Thanks

    • @jordanverhoeven3156
      @jordanverhoeven3156 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@akrilla5929 No worries, mostly easy questions to answer. So for the Guineas Book of world records Myrmecia Pyriformis is considered the most dangerous ant in the world. Thus it would be safe to assume its the most venomous of Australia's Myrmecia, however a close second would probably be Myrmecia Pilosula (Jack Jumper) as it stings people more frequently and causes anaphylaxis in people yearly.
      As for largest bull ant, that easily goes to Myrmecia Brevinoda, however since bull ants can be monomorphic it means they can vary in sizes. So the largest Pyriformis queen can be larger than the smallest Brevinoda queen, but the largest Brev will be much larger than the largest Pyriformis queen.

    I have never heard them called “Bulldog ants”. Here in Australia we call the “Bull ants”.
    When I was young, probably around 6 or 7, I was on a drive with my family. We stopped on the side of the road for some reason and I got out to pick some wild flowers for my mum. I didn’t realise there was a bull ant nest nearby, and by the time I got back to the car I had them all over my little body stinging me. I had to strip off my clothes and sit naked in the car while we tried to find a doctor.
