    1. Shoulders back for Open Chest and Breathing.
    2. Head Position, good posture - looking forward, not down or up.
    3. Elbows tucked in slightly.
    4. Too much Hip movement side to side. Use Core more.
    5. Landing on the Balls of your feet NOT HEELS.
    6. (FREE TIP) Lean slightly forward and let "gravity" help you with momentum.
    Can't wait to try everything out on my run tonight!!!

    Great job! Starting with running posture to improve your form has always made so much sense to me as a coach. Fix a runner's posture, and so much of the rest of their technique will fall in to place nicely.

      A very common cause for shin splints could actually be shoes that fit you well or have poor support, keep a lookout for the condition of your joggers every now and then. I also had shin splints after intense running, and after recovering briefly, I decided to change shoes, and I never had shin splints again.

    I am so glad I stumbled on this video. I just started running about two months ago to improve my health. I've never run in my life other than when forced to in high school (and emergency situations, lol). I watched a few videos, started off doing the interval thing (I have since started using a C25K app) and am slowly seeing my endurance increasing. But the things I struggled with was form, breathing, foot pain, etc., which I know has impeded my progress. This video has been the best one so far in addressing all those things in such an easy to understand way. I realize I've been hunched over and elbowing a lot of doors (sorry to all the dead people!). I've subscribed to you page on here and FB. I'm also stoked you post about your vegan lifestyle as I'm trying to move in that direction as well. Thanks so much! I will definitely try all of these tips on my run tomorrow.

    • @derirosswriter
      @derirosswriter 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes, definitely. I have a host of health problems including depression, metabolic disorder, and severe sleep issues. I've been frustrated with doctors brushing off my problems so I decided to try tackling things more holistically (I am absolutely not advocating avoiding doctors or taking meds because that's very important). I've noticed the lows with depression are less intense and I bounce back faster. I'm sleeping better which means I'm not sluggish and napping all day, and my appetite has improved, which has helped me not eat as much junk food at the wrong times. I think all this can happen with any exercise, but something about being outside to run has also helped me. I hope this helps!

    For over 15 years I’ve struggled with running and thought I was just not cut out for running, that I wasn’t built for running, that running was hard for me, that I would never be a good runner. Then I saw this video and watched your breathing video, and afterward I went outside and put it all together and had the best run of my life, even though I only jogged/ran/walked intermittently, running had never been so easy. Now I realize that going forward, it is my mind that I am going to have to master, because I can run now, and I felt great, and I had a lot of energy after I got done with a 45 minute jog/run/walk. I’m excited, but at the same time now I know that there are no more excuses anymore. I think the biggest thing that helped me was the breathing because I already kinda had everything else down except the forward lean which I had abandoned out of ignorance some number of months or years ago I can’t really remember, but now I will be conscious of it to do it and it works! I am also glad to get clarification and experiential verification of the mid foot strike. For me the 4 count breath worked, and I did a 3 count, and a 2 count, and even a 1 count. It helps keep you steady and OXYGENATED, which I think before I wasn’t getting enough oxygen to my body and was getting cramps in my calves, feet, etcetera, but the deep diaphragm breathing and complete inhalation’s and exhalations really helped me. I tried breathing through my nose but because of my narrow nasal passages I am not able to employ that method so I utilize strictly mouth breathing, I have to, and it works great for me, as my mouth never gets dry, I suppose if I was dehydrated or if it were particularly hot and dry I might but I would figure it out. Anyway I have hope now that I can actually be a runner! I’m really hoping to see a significant increase in my mileage, and I’m excited to see how my run times improve. Thank you so much.

      Steven Arceneaux wow. Please tell me how. The most I can do without stopping is 400m. And that is at a trot. All I want is to finish 1k. I actually want to run nonstop through a 5min song (slow tempo song). But I feel like my heart will give up. An I'm so sure it will implode in my chest.
      The running track I use is demarcated at every 100m. And I use these marks to push myself.
      What can I do to slowly increase my stamina?
      I'll be grateful if you replied.

    I joined a gym about 2 months ago. One of the instructors has the class run two laps around the building before class starts (getting that heart rate up). I haven't run since 8th grade! It has gotten better (knees and hip don't hurt as much), but I think I could use better form.
    I will try these techniques next class.

    Today i tried your tips at landing on front foot which means my stride needs to be reduce, and i lasted 4.3km in 23mins n step count 3.6k before down to crawl speed. At least with identical energy capacity as previously i can go further 😁

    1: 1:05 *Shoulder blades* (Bring shoulder blades slightly back)
    2: 1:36 *Head position* (Head slightly up, don't tilt it towards the ground nor the sky. Imagine a string attached to your head pulling you upward)
    3: 2:48 *Arms position* (Arms at a 90° angle, Arms slightly touching your rib cage. Imagine running between two walls placed shoulder width, don't touch them or you'll scrape your arms)
    4: 4:19 *Activating your Core* (To minimize hip rotation while running, helps you save energy and thus you can run for a longer period of time | Check Matt Camas video for activating core)
    5: 5:36 *Feet position while running* (Land on midfoot not heel)
    6: 6:40 *A slight forward lean with your body* (Allows gravity to help you run, also going to allow you to land on the midfoot

    My tip is don't run when you're obese for weight loss! Just walk, walking at a very fast pace is more sustainable (even if you're not fat) and has less impact on your knees. If you're obese the impact in runs is really unhealthy and disincentivizing. You could also consider biking which is zero impact and can either be almost as much or more than when you're running.

    • @PaperSlyPika
      @PaperSlyPika 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey! Thanks a lot for such a great video...I absolutely love how well you communicate in it! ;) I have been running for 3 months now, did my first 5k official run over the weekend and I notice my upper back gets really stiff after a run. Looking back at the pics from the run my neck looks too far ahead and my shoulder towards the front. I will implement in the upcoming month the techniques you mention in this video... I think I tick too many of these boxes =S will let you know how it goes ;)

    I watched this while on the treadmill, and I immediately incorporated the top about where to land on my foot. I can’t believe it, but I was immediately able to run a bit faster - and it felt easier than before! I’ve also been experiencing heel pain, and I bet this will help that a lot. Thanks!

    Dont feel embarrassed if youre watching this ive been a 400m and marathon runner for the last 6 years im 22. I have to watch it because all my life of running without proper form has given me a knot invetween my shoulder blades and i have to start from scratch rebuilding my whole form. Russian schools teach this and many other techniques early i don’t understand why we dont here in the west the sooner you learn this the less chance you have of doing irreversible damage to yourself as i almost did.
