Over a 2.5 year period in my CA County/City the count was 2500 to nearly 4000 and they insisted 80-90% were locals... But I myself was out and near the largest homeless zones nearly every day and many evenings- I watched, listened, and directly engaged. I came across TWO homeless that were actually even from this region, let alone locals to the city they were in. Many MANY are not. But they will say they are to get help or qualify for services
Reno has changed in the last 6 yrs for the better. I'm a frequent Reno visitor from San Francisco and the difference is night and day. But the anchor said something stood out, Reno has the intend for change.
There is more homelessness in Reno now. But the people are nicer and very respectful. Back in 2020 winter, while I was there I tried to give sandwich and cookies to an old lady. She was shivering in cold.she was old and frightened but her smile and appreciating I will never forget. Winters in Reno is extremely cold. Glad the city of Reno and the county is doing something. Where as SF, I don’t wanna talk about it,
I live in a different region in California but the transients here are spoiled, entitled, rude, and nuisance. Everyone in the region has given up trying to help because of how it just contributes to encourage more transients to abuse the goodwill offered to them. The region is an area that was heavily affected by a horrible wild fire that caught a portion of the city on fire, there’s a huge difference between the attitude of those who lost their homes in that fire compared to this in as toon of transients. I’d say Reno ironically is more relatable to the area I’m from culturally than any other area of the state, more down to earth attitude that pushes back when a line has been crossed. Reno is at least in a state that is working to focus on helping the community and citizens of those they represent, unlike California that imposes so many unnecessary legislation that any chance to improve one’s life goes through so many hurdles to get 1 job done. Screw the politicians and the idiots who put these people in the position to abuse the power that is supposed to help the state, not be a leach.
Can vouch Kate is 100% facts on our "homeless". Add we get regular waves of travelling criminal rings recruiting homeless and preying on rebuilt homes and residents 😡😒
Reno is trying they have built micro housing and more shelters but, however our homeless issue is still a arise and our homeless population is growing bigger there are camps still over by where I live. It's sad, I smell constant campfires and meth smoke. Honestly, best thing would to be build more rehabs and hospitals. We are running low on resources.
Was going to say did Reno deal with the homeless like many areas of the midwest do? Just give the homeless a one way bus ticket to San Francisco? I also want to know do they also have a constant barrage of special interest groups (aka homeless advocates) suing the city every time they attempt to clean up an area or move people into housing? One benefit of having an area where it regularly gets deadly cold is that the homeless are more willing to accept housing too, not to mention I got to imagine the cost of land around there is cheaper as well as much more available so also a lot easier to do this sort of thing like building shelters.
My family works with a lot of homeliness here, and no they do not give ticket to other states. If people need help or shelter we help, humans are not trash to us !
I think they sue only if the homeless are harassed and prevented from camping if there's not enough shelter beds. I think the vast majority of homeless people *want* to be housed. Those that don't have probably long since given up, which is sad.
If SF is serious about homeless publish an audit of all funds that went towards to help the homeless and prosecute anyone taking advantage of the funds.
Great strategies all around. Mod Pod designer did great...... 5:20 an Emergency Exit was included !!! Looks like a heater and A/C were included, too. Great job!
How about opening up all those closed business buildings in the Mission district that you leave the lights burning in 24/7. The homeless at least would have a roof over their head.
A lot of funds have been going to homelessness in SF. Those funds are just being “mismanaged”. 😒 Hopefully they are getting job placement and training to get their life on track and not just sent to a shelter…
Fake News 😂😂😂 I lived in Reno for the Last 7 years from the East Bay Area , Reno is filled with homeless all from California , Near the train tracks off the Vista Blvd Exit huge encampment, all downtown by the Cal Neva , Behind and Under the Reno PD police station next to the Reno Aces stadium , there still Everywhere !!!!!!!
Stop blaming SF. Reno only needed 600 beds to resolve its homeless issues. On top of that the freezing weather takes care of preventing homeless from staying. In contrast, SF has over 7K homeless (5x more than Reno), and more arrive every year. Many lured by their drug addiction. And the moderate climate doesn't impede encampments. SF doesn't have as much available space to build more shelters (unlike Reno), in addition to the higher construction costs in SF. So, comparing homeless budgets between cities is wrong, due to the huge cost of living differences. Also, not having to deal with crazy drug addicts has allowed the Reno project to succeed.
Just fearing of turning into another San Francisco with its homeless population; Reno took drastic action to prevent itself from the homeless problems that SF has.
Great work! Nice to see everyone working together to make it work for each person to get permanent home if they want to. California needs to learn from Nevada
Reno looks like a nice place to retire if you don't mind the four seasons of weather. Property tax lower, no state income tax, stricter homeless policies, buffets, gaming, shows, not too far from the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe nearby, a bit of remote work, etc. Probly tougher on crime, too, than in SF. Interesting.
What snow ❄️ 🏔, and cold 🥶. Yeah, my body not adapt to that kind of weather since California been my home land like forever and besides I don't like freezer burn even for a second it felt like 3rd degree burn to me. Maybe God will probably give us better body to adapt to freezing cold but since I not mutate to withstand cold weather I will stay in California.
Stop giving the street people options. Arrest them if they don’t want housing. If they don’t want to be in shelters? Go back to your state or get arrested. Compassion is being abused and their exploitation of using in the streets is ridiculously embarrassing.
Yes, our city/county has been proactive about homelessness. It does take working together to get real results. Don't agree that Virgnia Street was riddled with tents or even other busy streets downtown Reno. Those were more centered towards the east side of the Truckee River, along the freeway, and other areas. We have ambassadors that walk downtown who will help the homeless get resources and off the streets which has been a great service for the homeless, the public and businesses.
A lot of the homeless *are* hard-working people. They just can't afford the outrageous housing prices/rents. And before you say "So move!", where can they move to? Prices are going up pretty much everywhere and it takes money to move. Otherwise, boy, that'd be great!!
As I recall they tried enforcing a no camp policy in California but a judge said you can't enforce it unless you have enough shelter for everyone? So since they have enough 'beds' they can keep people off the streets then? So is this just a matter of space?
Yes, the ruling is Martin v Boise (2018) and applies to many states (including Nevada) which are part of the Ninth Judicial Circuit (a ruling from a circuit binds all states within the circuit, but not the entire country) You got it correct, the ruling says you can't enforce camping bans unless you have shelter available for ALL the homeless individuals. Reno doesn't actually want to offer support, and should not be celebrated for doing so. They're not doing it out of compassion. If they had done it in 2010, 2011 etc when homelessness was spiking from the recession, then you could celebrate that, but now, they're only doing it because their hands are tied. It's cynical. Previously, Reno handled the homeless by bullying, intimidating, abusing them, and shipping them out of town. Nothing changed wrt to their compassion....it's the legal landscape that changed, with Martin v Boise
To reduce homelessness finger print these ppl before they are given any state benefits. Large number of them are not "homeless" to begin with they have family in other states they just look to get high as a cloud on taxpayers expense. Nevada has not reduce homelessness they traffick them into California. That's how Reno actually "reduce homelessness".
San Francisco is doing the same thing. They just have a bigger population. Like the people of Reno found, you have to have the mental health providers and shelter for every single person on the street. It took us a decade.
I Live in Northern Nevada, but I feel your problem is real estate. You value cost of your estate more that its people. Until you value human life and dignity over real estate and valuation assessments, SF will continue to have that problem. I do not feel bad for your homeliness problem, I feel bad for the humanity you lost.
@@larrym2434And therein lies the problem - capitalistic solutions for a social issue. Housing started to be seen more as a means of accumulating wealth rather than a basic human need. And when that happened, it became more about profits and value, with supply being deliberately limited - even as demand skyrocketed - by those who stood to profit from it, thus inflating prices out of reach for too many people and leading to skyrocketing homelessness rates. People's lives and well-being should NEVER be reduced to mere dollars and cents!
if folks refuse shelter, there should be the option to move them. we dont have to have people live on the sidewalk with no facilities. we have tried it and are just over it. clean it up. many just dont want to follow some random rule.
Fed money? If that money went to SF 95% will still go to administrative costs and 5% to actual homeless housing. At that rate the fed had to give SF $100 billion to make a dent there.
@@catmer9460 Homeless are immune to all non violent laws in california. dozen camps around me are built out of 10 plus shopping carts. that being felony possession of stolen goods, and cops wont even confiscate them. death threats, arson "accidental fires" as the cops call them. pulling knives and machetes' on people, nudity and pissing and pooing out in the open and the cops just say they cant do anything. or the district attorney wont press charges so they wont bother. they choose this life, theyve told me themselves. jail or worse will have to come.
San Francisco is like a spoiled rich kid. The more money the kid has, the worse they behave. The kid who has to grow up poor (ie. Washoe County) has to learn to be resourceful and make the best of what they have. Almost always the poor kid succeeds in a meaningful way far more than the rich kid. This is all to say that money is not the problem here. It's simply a matter of will to solve the homeless problem. I'd argue that if SF was less funded, they'd start acting more resourcefully and actual solve the underlying problems instead of throwing money at everything into oblivion
I kind of agree - I feel finger pointing and fake it to make it's run your state a little bit not really knowing how to fix things or get along to make real change just doing what congress our government does argue over things and accomplish nothing and pay real people to solve their problems.
I used to live in Reno. I don't think many of the Bay Area commenters here appreciate how bad the homelessness became in Reno (and probably still is - I haven't been back in five years). Everywhere in downtown Reno, I'd always come across three or four panhandlers. Some people would sexually harass and follow my ex girlfriend. I was robbed and violently beaten once. You couldn't enjoy the waterfront, because the only people out and about were creepy as shit. I hope this video is actually true, because Downtown Reno was honestly downright scary. I wish the bad Winters scared dangerous street junkies away. It did not.
I'm confident that once the government sees this report, that they will give large amounts of money to the "san Francisco nonprofits" to continue solving this problem as they have been doing for the last 70 years.
If it's just a housing issue (it's not, but argument's sake let's say so), why not rezone some of the now-empty office buildings as residential and convert them to very small, individual living spaces. At least that aspect of Reno's solution could be reached I think.
it is a good idea! how long can this idea run, if there is no program to permanently help the homeless to reintegrate back into society and making sure they dont fall back into poverty?!
Hi guys, I been homeless in both Reno and San Francisco. The difference is, I legally carry a gun. Its a hell of a lot safer for me here. I never used Reno services. @Twoplywatson What you don't know is, homeless flock to SF because they get more money from your tax dollars. The government CAN'T bus anyone anywhere. Where do you think the enormous homeless population of homeless in Hawaii come from!?. I know a homeless chick who moved there. She gets free food and partying every day LOL. Being homeless in San Francisco is better than owning a home in most parts of Africa and the middle east. Liberals won't let you bus them home , lol 😆 🤣 😂
Yeah I find it hard for California to ever be able to pull something like this off. My guess is in Nevada they probably spent the money they were given on what it was supposed to be spent on and in California the money just gets wasted to companies that are friends of the politicians!
So this requires a massive push for infrastructure change, because its not just about creating the living space. San Francisco, and Oakland have both have done this heavily creating "liveable" space for the homeless, the issue it policing the space once its been created. By putting a concentrated amount of homeless into a space you create a hotspot for pushers and dealers, and if not heavily monitors even the "security" will get in on and basically becoming tax payer funded security for these dealers.
What SF has learned about homelessness is that it is a huge revenue stream keeps increasing every year. That much money creates myriad opportunities for corrupton and influence which the SF government has become dependent on and is loathe to reduce or lose. Clearly the homeless spending - $90K or so per person per year - is more than enough to take care of the homeless. But the government continually cries poor, wrings their hands, and raises the budget and taxes.

They can pitch a tent in Reno because Nevada is part of the Ninth Circuit and bound by Martin v Boise as of 2018. However, 90% of homeless people in California are from California, and 75% are homeless within the same county as when they were housed (USCF California Statewide Study of People Experiencing Homelessness)
Bullshit on most being locals.
They SELF REPORT TO ACTIVIST COUNT TAKERS.
Absolutely zero verification is done on those claims, and they think it makes them seem more worthy of funding help.
Over a 2.5 year period in my CA County/City the count was 2500 to nearly 4000 and they insisted 80-90% were locals...
But I myself was out and near the largest homeless zones nearly every day and many evenings-
I watched, listened, and directly engaged.
I came across TWO homeless that were actually even from this region, let alone locals to the city they were in.
Many MANY are not. But they will say they are to get help or qualify for services
Anyone who says homeless aren’t pitching tents in Reno is boldface lying to you.
not rocket science, glad they are figuring this out.
Reno elevation is 4,600 feet.
San Francsico please save your city its such a beautiful city😢!!
Having subzero conditions in winter helps.
This!
Cold Winter solved their problem.
Yip, those homeless migrated to California when there free bus ride.
Washoe County is not corrupt like SF County. Huge difference.
Send this video to the city leaders ASAP.
Proud to be a Nevadan! Silver State FTW 💪🏻
Naive
lol
Nevada resident here. We're ranked very low on education spending and mental healthcare in national rankings. Nothing to celebrate.
By FOX 'News'.@@Imgonnabeastarstarstarstar
@@WeylandLabsThank you!!!❤
I think they sue only if the homeless are harassed and prevented from camping if there's not enough shelter beds. I think the vast majority of homeless people *want* to be housed. Those that don't have probably long since given up, which is sad.
Cruelty to the homeless will certainly reduce homelessness. The problem is NOT the homeless, it is the economy.
NO open drug use.
Easy to reduce homelessness in middle of winter in Reno. It’s cold! Come back in summer it will be full again.
Great job!
Thank you, this is good reporting. And it gives hope San Francisco can change how it handles its homeless people for the better. 👍
How about opening up all those closed business buildings in the Mission district that you leave the lights burning in 24/7. The homeless at least would have a roof over their head.
Grew up in SF, living in the peninsula now. My family goes to Reno for so called long weekend vacations a few times a year.
That’s because Reno is not allowing “homeless advocates” dictate policy.
A lot of funds have been going to homelessness in SF. Those funds are just being “mismanaged”. 😒 Hopefully they are getting job placement and training to get their life on track and not just sent to a shelter…
And in march there's another ballot initiative to float another bond issue for more funds. I'm voting no.,
Making illegal drugs legal, to solve homelessness? What you sow you reap?
Great work. Everyone should watch this.
"Work will set you free"
German prison camp slogan...
Great work! Nice to see everyone working together to make it work for each person to get permanent home if they want to. California needs to learn from Nevada
Awesome Reno!
Love ABC Bay Area news. Good reporters. The 4 at 4 is my favorite.
Thank God they have a good Governor. Other states need to follow his lead.
I live in SF...they, we, don't like being told what to do...so people quietly just leave.....And i don't blame them...
Eventually you will have to be in one of these places. So be open to the idea real fast. Project 2025💯
@@smoothoperator1083Dear God, I hope they don't implement that "Project 2025"! Sounds like an absolute nightmare!!
@@denisemayosky1955 It's coming. And if successful in 4 years. Bye bye Democrats until 2036!!!!! 💯
I tried living there and the cold and snow is not livable. I'll stay next to the beach in my expensive apartment
If you are from CA, don't come here, we do NOT want your politics.
Reno tough on crime? rofl. Reno is a slum and it's not because of the homeless people
My late husband , me and our kids lived in Reno for eight years, I loved living there
if you leave for two days well you don't need shelter or a place to stay do you?
Empty beds and a whole bunch of social workers
Reno Is 29 degrees San Francisco is 50 degrees where would you want to be homeless?🤔
15 degrees.
….Santa Barbara
sf should just bus all of the homeless people to reno
Stop giving the street people options. Arrest them if they don’t want housing. If they don’t want to be in shelters? Go back to your state or get arrested. Compassion is being abused and their exploitation of using in the streets is ridiculously embarrassing.
DO YOU THINK THAT SHELTERS WILL AUTOMATICALLY STOP CRIME AND DRUG ABUSE?
CAN YOU PROVIDE US WITH YOUR RESEARCH ON THIS?
Good job. Housing first is a proven first step to get folks back on their feet, solving their own problems.
NO, wanting to WORK, and having SKILLS is the first step. Cali people have NEITHER.
The problem has always been letting non profits take the lead $$$. We trust these non profits too much in SF. Good job Reno/washoe county.
Good. Now San Francisco can bus all the homeless back to Reno.
Send your homeless to Reno. They know how to help them.
There’s no solution for lazy people. Support hard working people who need help. America has too many funds.
A lot of the homeless *are* hard-working people. They just can't afford the outrageous housing prices/rents. And before you say "So move!", where can they move to? Prices are going up pretty much everywhere and it takes money to move. Otherwise, boy, that'd be great!!
@@denisemayosky1955 Move south, go where the illegal immigrants are coming from. must be lots of empty houses down there by now.
Please do this everywhere! And allow pets. 🐈🐶
So San Francisco should just ship some homeless to Reno.
Junkies are not victims they are volunteers.
See what could be done when you don't allow all the money to be stolen
Excellent reporting. Coordination ! Enlightening. Well done.
As I recall they tried enforcing a no camp policy in California but a judge said you can't enforce it unless you have enough shelter for everyone? So since they have enough 'beds' they can keep people off the streets then? So is this just a matter of space?
Yes, the ruling is Martin v Boise (2018) and applies to many states (including Nevada) which are part of the Ninth Judicial Circuit (a ruling from a circuit binds all states within the circuit, but not the entire country)
You got it correct, the ruling says you can't enforce camping bans unless you have shelter available for ALL the homeless individuals.
Temperature in Reno tonight: 22ºF
Temperature in San Francisco tonight: 50ºF
They didn't head towards Lockwood and see the homeless camping by the river just out of town of reno.
San Francisco is doing the same thing. They just have a bigger population. Like the people of Reno found, you have to have the mental health providers and shelter for every single person on the street. It took us a decade.
criminalizing the homeless is a crime
If SF wasn’t so damn corrupt, the vast homeless funds could have built huge alternative housing for the homeless instead of lining pockets.
Reno puts them on a bus to SF.
i was in Reno one week ago but still see people sleeping in de middle off the sidewalk at nighttime.Nobobody care !
Better than their last solution: a one-way ticket to San Francisco. (Look it up.)
yes, they are sending their homeless to San Francisco. very simple.
The capitalist market economy determines the value of the real estate .... supply and demand.
People's lives and well-being should NEVER be reduced to mere dollars and cents!
they keep building single family homes when we need soviet block housing. big old projects but no million dollar houses make more money.
This is in large part due to Costa-Hawkins. We can't make significantly progress without repealing Costa-Hawkins
Thanks, this is good reporting.
if folks refuse shelter, there should be the option to move them. we dont have to have people live on the sidewalk with no facilities. we have tried it and are just over it. clean it up. many just dont want to follow some random rule.
Fed money? If that money went to SF 95% will still go to administrative costs and 5% to actual homeless housing. At that rate the fed had to give SF $100 billion to make a dent there.
Oh , come on , San Francisco is incapable of learning anything , never have and never will !
What a good program, we need the help…!!! 💯💯💯
Nevada law allows the uncooperative homeless to be Jailed. Does California allow this?
I believe a judge decided that this is illegal.
Which goes a long way to undermining the whole idea of this supposedly novel "solution" to the homeless situation.@@catmer9460
That's interesting perspective.
it isnt money its criminals not going to jail.
All social security should have available housing if needed , its a sad state of America.
Welfare does housing. or just use cash assistance to rent a room. but housing has rules.
If it's just a housing issue (it's not, but argument's sake let's say so), why not rezone some of the now-empty office buildings as residential and convert them to very small, individual living spaces. At least that aspect of Reno's solution could be reached I think.
Good idea!!
Musk said he tried with twitters office and got shot down. problem is there will never be enough beds, more will come to fill the streets.
it is a good idea!
how long can this idea run, if there is no program to permanently help the homeless to reintegrate back into society and making sure they dont fall back into poverty?!
Because the casinos didn’t want it. Even during covid the guards would not allow the homeless within blocks.
I feel very sad for the homeless dogs 😢
How is the permanent housing paid for ? What program ? How much ?
Wow fascinating story!
SF & Oakland will now ship all their homeless to Reno & Sparks
I'll buy some tickets for anyone that wants to go
Hi guys, I been homeless in both Reno and San Francisco.
The difference is, I legally carry a gun.
Its a hell of a lot safer for me here.
I never used Reno services.
I parked my car in different places, worked and had a gun to protect myself.
6:07 oh yeah, 100 percent sober. I miss SF but your policies and laws really suck.
"I left my ❤ in San Francisco"
so bus the homeless back to where they came from... it just might work.
@Twoplywatson
What you don't know is, homeless flock to SF because they get more money from your tax dollars.
Reno's real strategy to get rid of homeless is to send them to SF 😅
“It’s my time to shine and to rise. I’m like the dirt, still I rise!”
Can we talk about how hard that quote goes?
Good segment.
It also looks like they didn't legalize drug use or have Dean Preston to get in the way
ABC7 News touted APEC as being some great success for the city and we all saw how that turned out.
Yeah, they do need to use it more wisely...
