    Thank you for the excellent and precise detailed explanation. The shop wanted to charge me $600-$800 to do this job. In total it cost me around $280 for the alternator I wanted with good warranty (keeping the car). It took me around 50 mins total being super careful with the belt and threadings on the alternator swap. My savings bought many Christmas gifts.

    TCCN-thanks for the video. I am currently assisting my son with his 2013 Camry alternator replacement, but I am coaching him via Snapchat and we are both watching your video simultaneously. So between your video and me, he is successfully replacing the alternator as we speak. I thought the GoPro angles were perfect for me, as I understand car maintenance a little better. My son; however, needed me to explain some things from your video. All in all, I think your video is top-notch, Sir. Some background on me, I am a retired (29yrs) Army Blackhawk helicopter mechanic. But I firmly believe I get more satisfaction in doing my own car maintenance as opposed to paying someone else.

    I changed out my alternator this morning with your help. Thank you so much for making this video. playing your video was just like having you right there at my side, giving me directions. replacing it seem fairly simple, but watching you do it helped with all the questions I would have been googling as I went, and especially not breaking any of the clips, again thank you SOOO MUCH!!! I thank you and my Camry thanks you!!!!!!

    Thanks for the video. My alternator went out today and it was making the same whining noise you described. As I get older I despise working on a vehicle now but after I watched your video, I had the alternator out and back in in about 30 minutes. Thank you!

    The GoPro view was great because it is the view that the "mechanic" (you) actually sees. Also, you are "sharp" enough to know when an additional or alternate view is necessary to make the video explicitly clear. Thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge with all of us DIYers!

  • @KenDombeck

    Thank you for the tip about unplugging the alternator to confirm that it is the issue. I did this and confirmed that it was the alternator making the noise. Saved me from just throwing the parts cannon at the issue.

    • @KenDombeck
      @KenDombeck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@driverman9528 After replacing the alternator I am guessing that I could have just possibly replaced the one-way alternator pulley but that required special tools to take off and it cost less to just get a rebuilt alternator.

    • @reasonablySmartIdiot
      @reasonablySmartIdiot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KenDombeck tool is $35 pulley is $40, how did you find a rebuilt for $75? I have replaced the pulley on mine twice.

    • @KenDombeck
      @KenDombeck 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reasonablySmartIdiot The pulley tool I found was $135 not $35. But I admit I didn't search very hard for a cheaper one. RockAuto had a Denso for $140 but I didn't want to deal with a core charge and mailing it back so I got my from Napa and it was on sale so I got it from there.

    • @reasonablySmartIdiot
      @reasonablySmartIdiot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@KenDombeck yeah the tool rock auto sells from gates is absurdly priced. It's basically a two stage socket nothing too fancy. OEMtools makes one that can be found for around ~$35 and then you'll always have it anytime a pulley on any alternator on any vehicle you ever have goes bad and you'll only be spending $50 tops of repairs buying pullies instead of alternators. I'm just a big believer in investing in tools. Cost more the first time but then saves you later, and I find it almost always saves me a bit that first time too.

Just to confirm when this happens the complete alternator needs to be replaced? Not some other general source? @davenaatz8078 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great tips, thanks. At about 1:30 into the video to see if the noise stops you remove a "little connector" which I assume is a black plastic to wires off a wiring harness. It does not show well in the video but if the entire plastic is supposed to pull out I cannot budge it on my 2.5L 2012 Camry XLE. I'm getting a howl varying with rpms coming from the alternator area so other than the tensioner I cannot tell what else it could be. After just a few minutes running the alternator body is too hot to touch (in 40 deg F weather) so I'm suspicious it could be the alternator bearing but would like to pull the connector before I spend $250 on a new good quality alternator. I don't want to force it or I may cause more problems. Thanks if you (or others) are monitoring.

      Well, the alternator itself is almost $200. I’m gonna go spend an extra 120 bucks to put it in. What’s the difference now I ain’t have to deal dealing with the crap the video is very informational, but it’s very hard when you break the top lobe off the tensioner so now you have to have a special tool to get to the other 14 mm bolt
