If it hasn’t been said, there are other videos in that channel that are SIMILAR. however, this is one of a kind because Chad is the ONLY one who didn’t listen to it all the way through before jumping in. Other listened, even took notes and had time to think about how they wanted to play. What’s impressive about this is Chad just jumped RIGHT IN after listening for 15 seconds!!

Sugarfoot jumped right into Linkin Park as well. His technique really changes the song. Where as Chad is amazing and fills right in similar to the original, Sugarfoot takes a whole new spin on a linkin park song and it's pretty dope. Good dude.

Chad Smith is without question one of the greatest in the pocket, listening, groove drummers of all time. He LITERALLY could play with ANY BAND and make them better. Arguably a top 10 drummer of all time

Other drummers who have done this, usually listen to it all the way thru take notes to structure and attempt to play multiple times.

MJ's drummer, Jonathan "Sugerfoot" Moffett was the first and only other drummer who started playing right away. Though his version was not really close to the Linkin Park song he was hearing/playing along with.

RHCP has some of the greatest musical Prerormers of all time from the drums and Chad Smith to John on the guitar and flea on bass it's crazy how all those top talents ended up in 1 band

The drumeo video with Larnell Lewis hearing enter sandman for the first time is amazing too.
The best thing about this one in particular is that Chad went right in on the very first listen WITHOUT the drums in the mix. Typically on these videos, the drummer hears the full track WITH the drums, makes some notes, maybe listens again, and then plays through what they kind of remember. None of the other drummers that have done this with Drumeo have EVER done it this way, just jumping right in on the first listen with no drum track. As a drummer myself, this is pretty difficult to do on the very first listen. Yes, you'll get the timing of the song but the trick is where do the breaks come in and what is the structure of the song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc). Chad Smith is the drummer for Red Hot Chili Peppers for over thirty years now. And as for the stick breaking, it happens a lot when your playing, that's why you gotta have a stick bag that's easily accessible. LOL. Knew you would enjoy this one. This was like watching the creative process in real time.
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that the whole point of this, is that the drummer DOES NOT hear the drum part and makes up his/her own, then compares with the actual drums on the album, otherwise hearing the drums would defeat the purpose, am I wrong?
no you aren't wrong, most of the time the drummer would not hear the drum part, but drumeo has done some videos of a different kind where the drummer can listen to the track like enter sandman with larnell lewis@@reactionsaccount3955
@@reactionsaccount3955 you are correct, the other drummers listen to the song for structure and timing but they aren't hearing the drum track, just taking notes and developing an idea for what they might want to do during their take.
There’s also Dirk the drummer from Megadeath who does Mr Brightside by the Killers. Dude seemed so chill and humble. Plus, his version of it made it feel deeper than the original by far.
You gotta react to "Larnell Lewis hears Enter Sandman for the first time" from the same channel. He listens to it once and then plays but still really impressive. Really cool to see drummers tackle challenges like this.
Yes breaking sticks happens ALL the time! Every drummer playing any sort of gig ALWAYS has a couple of spare sticks within quick reach somewhere on the kit in case they break one OR drop one.
This was the best one I ever seen He didn't even listen to the whole song and pretty much nailed it true artist. The fact that he broke the drumstick and you really couldn't tell Master musician

I play stringed instruments, I can tell you drums are wayy harder. You have to be able to keep several different rhythms going with different parts of your body. Not easy..and he plays in Red Hot Chili Peppper

I've probably watched this 20 times now as I watch other people's reactions to it. This reaction is quite entertaining! I only wish you knew that Chad was the first to just jump in and play like that where the others before him all listened all the way through at least once like @poppys34 said. I would love to see how you react knowing that. But this was a fun watch.

Larnell Lewis when he is on drumeo channel doing the same, playing Chick Corea. It’s unbelievable. As a former vocalist who plays no instruments, it’s my understanding from my friends who are nerdy musicians and multi-instrumentalists, having a full understanding of music theory and exercising “active listening” is key. This is bad ass.

Hey, Duane. First off, I just want to say that through my whole watch through of your reaction, you only really paused the video a handful of times and. you chose to take in the video first before offering your feedback.
Second, I liken what Chad is doing to what most rappers do before they hop on a beat. They count the bars and structure cadence, delivery etc according to beat. Chad is doing pretty much the same, but the other thing that he does is matching where the vocals go and anticipating when the song drops and/or when it crescendos and going off of that!
He adds his fills, basically his own rendition of what he THINKS the drum pattern would sound!
stop what you're doing. go to your local pawn shop. buy the cheapest full size wood construction acoustic guitar they have. take lessons.
it will change how you hear and appreciate music... for the better.

AKA a worthless and unplayable abomination with frets and strings that will hurt your fingers in five minutes and disgust you from trying to learn guitar ever again. An entry level Yamaha (even a second hand one that has been checked out by seasoned guitar player) is way more useful than a crappy contraption from Wish. And you can resell it for a fair price if you're bored or if you want to go further in guitar playing
Starting with a decent instrument is always the best and fastest way to get into learning something, whether it's knitting or flying.
