Interesting Note: That's Derringer playing it live with the band in the video, but Ronnie Montrose played on the album version, with Derringer credited as producer. In other words, the band just got even more killer. Chuck Ruff on drums.
Edgar Winter is credited as the first musician to “wear” a strapped on keyboard and bring it to the front stage spotlight. A classic instrumental for sure!
He also somehow managed to have second, third and fourth instruments that he was equally good at. Tina Turner and her producer could have had anyone play the sax on 'The Best.' And they picked a guy who had the sax as his third instrument (if I remember the order right).
Edgar and his brother Johnny are both albino.Johnny isn’t in this one but they have a lot of songs together. Check out Tobacco Road and MoJo Blues. ☮️💜
Being albinos and growing up in Texas, they couldn't play out in the sun so they stayed inside. Johnny mastered the guitar and Edgar mastered everything else!
The whole band looked cool as hell, Mr.Frankenstein, Mr.Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and Mr.I Can Dream About You and the top tier drummer were in their bag on this one....jaw dropping!
Great reaction. I got to meet Edgar at a bar in Minneapolis. Talked to him outside during a break. What a cool dude what a great night one of my best all-time nights in a bar.
he had a much more highly talented brother. or at least one that didn't have an album cover that still gives me nightmares. (they only come out at night). album covers almost never frighten me, but boy, that one was a doozy.
I used to lie on the floor with my head between two stereo speakers and listen to this cranked up high😂. Check out “Tobacco Road” with his brother, Johnny. Amazing!🌺✌️

Just saw Edgar Winter in concert last night touring w/ Ringo Starr, Steve Lukather and many others. . .! He played Free Ride and Frankenstein and rocked it. . ! Fantastic night!
This is my favorite performance to recommend to reactors, exactly because of the way you responded to it. This is an incredible live performance! Edgar Winter and his brother, Johnny, grew up as albino kids in Texas, and because they couldn't go out much (from a combination of skin and eye sensitivity to sunlight and the teasing of other kids), they stayed at home a lot and mastered many different instruments. Time well spent and proof (if anyone needs it) that everyone has a gift if they are lucky enough to discover and cultivate it. Thank goodness Edgar and Johnny both did, because they have given the world so much incredible music.
This song was actually a hit on AM radio. (I guess if anything was on AM radio it was a hit) That’s how I heard it. A shortened version of course. Couldn’t take my eyes off them in this performance, which I’d never seen before. Thanks for reacting to it!
At the time this came out, yes AM radio played the hits BUT the stations weren't locked into genre so they played some of everything. We grew up with pop, bubblegum, rock, country, folk, Motown, progressive, and everything in between. If people were buying the songs, we heard them on the radio. later (early to mid 70's) we also got Album Oriented Rock (AOR) stations that would play the full length versions of hits as well as entire albums.
Same as you, Bread Man. This was an amazing performance for me bc all these years I just figured this song was impossible to play live and they nailed it and then some. Although I've loved this and a few other of their songs for decades, I was totally ignorant of the band- or Edgar mostly. That was before Harri played it, and his followers educated me in this comment section. Hats off to all. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
I just saw Edgar Winter this weekend as part of the Ringo Star Allstars tour. At the age of 76 he still rips this song. From 1973 to 2023 this is still a fun song to listen to. What is even more fun is all the reactions he gets from today TH-cam reaction videos.
The Winter brothers had no friend in the Texas sun where they lived, so they practiced their instruments indoors. They had a friend in the late blues great, Muddy Waters, and are part of the Texas tradition of blues players like ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Janis Joplin, and many others. The brothers, left a great body of work.
Edgar and Johhny Winter are both legends. Johnny was a Blues guitarist like no other. He and Edgar started out playing music together when they were toddlers. They had a plastic ukulele that they shared.Edgar grew tired of playing it and asked his parents for different instruments. He mastered all of them in short order. They played together for awhile as young adults, but Johnny decided he wanted to go strictly Blues guitar. He told Edgar there wouldn't be any saxophones playing in his band. So, Edgar went out on his own and began recording his own music. Janis Joplin and the Winter brothers all went to the same school together in Texas. There must be something in the water there.
You always hit it right on the head!!!... that the reason it’s called Frankenstein!!!!..... it’s a mid - mass of all, every thing and the kitchen sink!!! Just like the creation Frankenstein ... and it’s GREAT!!!!
I'm so glad you did this song. I requested it a while back. Edgar Winter is definitely unique and so very talented. The guitarist was Rick Derringer, who sang "Hang on, Sloopy" when with the group The McCoys. He joined the group after lead guitarist Ronnie Montrose left the band. This song was on the "They Only Come Out at Night" album. Another great hit from that album was "Free Ride," which you should also react to. Another great song, but recorded earlier, is "Tobacco Road," also worth reacting to. And if you love the blues, you should react to something by Johnny Winter, Edgar's brother. The musical talent definitely runs in the family.
Rick Derringer was the producer on the original recording, but did not play on it (AFAIK). But Rick was the touring guitarist when I saw them in '73 or '74.
I saw Edgar Winter and Leon Russel in Benicia, CA, in the '90s! In a theater that sat 200 people. THEY DID FRANKENSTEIN AND STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND...
My kids and I were blessed enough to get to see Edgar Winter open for Alice Cooper in 2017 and let me tell you, Edgar still puts on a show like no other. His vocals are still very strong and when performing Frankenstein with his current band(which was super tight), he still played the keyboard, sax, and drums and was all over the place. It was an awesome show!
Harri, that's why they call it The Edgar Winter Group 😉😊 The reason for the name, actually comes from how the song was made. Edgar Winter had just bought 1 of the first "portable" ARP Synthesizers and was, in fact the 1st to ever strap one around his neck so he could more around while playing. He was a child prodigy, but, being so smart and able, he only took a couple lessons before getting bored with the instrument. So, he decided instead, to devote an afternoon in the studio, with tapes-a-rollin', and just experiment on the device until he figured it out. They didn't have digital recording equipment back then so, the name of the song comes from the fact that they cut and cut and cut pieces of tape and spliced them all back together to make (i.e. compose) the song. Naturally, Frankenstein was the logical name for it. Fun Facts 😉😊 !!!
Edgar Winter Group are legends for decades and Edgar is master on multiple instrubments was one of the industry my booked session musician, especially his sax work.
Edgar winter composed this masterpiece and the drummer Chuck Ruff coined the name Frankenstein because of the way they had to cut and splice to make it all fit together. It’s always such a joy each and every time I watch this. Just incredible talent and they are just jamming and having a great time! RiP to Johnny Winter, like his brother could play multiple instruments and sing the blues like no one else I’ve ever heard. Much admiration and respect🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
hey thanks for putting this up. youre right this is the best version. so clean and tight. rick derringer on guitar and hartman on bass, dont know the drummer but these guys were the best of their day. i think this is mid 70's. edgar is just pure music flowing out, incredible. the drum duet rivals that of the grateful dead. shows you how spoiled we were back then.
I was fortunate enough to see The Edgar Winter Group live in 1974(?) with Bad Co. as the opening act. It shortly was after Ronnie Montrose had left the band and Rick Derringer was playing guitar, as he is in this video. Bad Co. had just released their first album a few months earlier, but were all over the radio. It was a great show, almost too much for my teenage brain to comprehend. Thanks, Harri!
Was a trip to see him and his brother together on stage under black lights ! look like ghosts when they would open their eyes . the pink eyes were eerie as hell ! almost every concert the other brother would show up .
From a Texan to another Texan Band we lived down the street. They started as a garage band and they drove our parents nut. They gave me a love of music.
Thank You Harri!!!!!!!!! It was terrific to watch your reaction!!! I knew you would appreciate this performance. It’s one of a kind! If you want to hear more of this you should watch Tobacco Road from 1970 with Edgar and his brother Johnny on keyboards. It’s really unreal!
There are a lot of musicians who can play multiple instruments, but they are usually known for one in particular. I myself play 7 different instruments. Prog rock requires only the best musicians and that's why I've been a massive fan of prog rock since I was 8 when I started playing the drums. I'm now 60 and still listen to Yes, Pink Floyd, Rush etc. No computers or auto tune, just raw talent. There was a black family living on my estate who has a son that had albinism and not wishing to sound wrong, but the poor guy looked very odd with white skin, African features and a bright ginger afro. A lovely family that went through some difficult times, as you can imagine back in the 60s. So pleased I stumbled upon your channel. You've just got yourself another subscriber. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
Edgar Winter named this song "Frankenstein because he was working on this for a while. He was piecing this and that together but he didn't ever quite finish it. They were making an album and they needed a song. They decided to use this instrumental but didn't have a name for it. Edgar decided since the song was made up of different parts he put together that "Frankenstein" was appropriate.
I remember seeing them live and being 420 friendly, in the front of the crowd. Afterwards stopped at the corner store for a pack of smokes. A stray pure white cat was begging, so i got him 2 cans of food and he jumped in my car. I got a great friend that night and named him Edward.
And on the same album this was released from , we have Autumn, one of the most beautiful ballads written, sung by Dan Hartman, the bass player. RIP Dan.
Edgar and his brother Johnny were albinos from Beaumont, TX. There and in Houston they couldn't go outside and play in the hot Texas sun so they stayed inside and learned to play all sorts of instruments. Their first big gig was playing with BB King when they were still just young kids. Frankenstein was written by accident just putting together bits and pieces of sounds they had been playing with. Over time it morphed into this. That's how it was named Frankenstein.
I can’t believe I never watched this one until today. I’m so glad you watched a good live version or you may have had no idea what was happening. Back in the day I saw them do this live a couple of time. I laughed a little when you thought you recognized the song and said ‘maybe I’ll know when they start to sing.’ We’ll never know I guess! Great one, Harri.
Growing up with all these great musicians in the 60’s and 70’s I think we took them for granted sometimes..I was very fortunate to have this great music a true renaissance that might not be duplicated!
The reason this music seems so fresh and raw and full of energy, is because for the most part, no one plays instruments on stage anymore. When's the last time you saw any 'real artist,' playing music on a instrument, vs the common canned beats and electronic noise that's filling the airwaves today? The 'music industry,' no longer runs on real music and art. It runs on money and whomever can get it for them.
Saw Edgar Winter live in Central Park Schaefer concerts in the early 70’s and when they played this they cut the lights and put neon green light on his hands… it was wild.. with Rick Derringer on guitar
Songs like this are what made the 70s great. Album rock stations played songs like this cuz they were great. Didn't need to be a top 40 hit to get airplay.
There is just SO MUCH MORE to the Winters Bros discography and it is ALL funky as this; there are examples of either or both Winters' gettin' SO Down and Low, as to make this look like a Baptist church choir practice!!
Edgar Winter is a master of the ARP2600 synth, and this video is an amazing showcase of that fact. The rest of his band being just as tight and on time as they were through what started as a jam track is also terrific.
I saw Edgar Winter 3 times...one was with Johnny also. One had Rick Derringer as the warm up band, then he came back on & played the show with Edgar. Crazy good stuff there! "artists" today don't have the stamina for this stuff.
Had the opportunity to see Edgar and Leon Russell play a small club together back in the late '80's. Both bands played this together as an encore. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Hi Harri👋 The Brothers Winter are both incredibly and wickedly talented🎶💯. They are Albino brothers that grew up in Texas indoors out of the hot sun. They taught themselves everything. Johnny Winter played in Woodstock and had a solo career and he and SRV were friends. Johnny also had Tommy Shannon as his bass player before Tommy joined Double Trouble. You owe it to yourself to react to Tobacco Road by the brothers together. You will see Tommy Shannon in that video. You will never hear another voice like Edgar Winter in this song.
My friend went to school with Edgar and his brother back in Texas. You said they were really really talented musically and involved in all activities he sure the hell is talented
A journalist once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like being the greatest guitarist, he responded with; I don't know, you'll have to ask Johnny Winter. Both huge talent.
And this is what can be achieved when you're a child that has to avoid sunlight. Stay inside and master musical instruments because you can't be out playing with you friends. Imagine if we has all these "Smart" devices back then...we'd probably never been able to experience this talent.
So, so, so much talent on that stage.
Rick Derringer on guitar and Dan Hartman on bass. Killer. 🎸
That rhythm section was just deadly.
Good Lord.
No way!!! Rick Derringer? Dang
I never knew that was Derringer!

Saw Edgar Winter live in Central Park Schaefer concerts in the early 70’s and when they played this they cut the lights and put neon green light on his hands… it was wild.. with Rick Derringer on guitar
I've seen Edgar in concert. He was awesome, great show. He's one of my favorite artists.
Monster hit! Classic instrument playing.
Now that you’ve done Edgar Winter you need to see and hear brother Johnny Winter
One of the best shows I've ever seen.
the first rock/jazz fusionists?????? Fabulous!!!!!
His technique on the keyboard would have may my piano teacher proud.
Probably one of the last INSTRUMENTAL songs tobe popular!, unlike the '60s that had tons of them! The Stones even had one 2120 SOUTH MICHIGAN AVENUE!
My friend went to school with Edgar and his brother back in Texas. You said they were really really talented musically and involved in all activities he sure the hell is talented
Another vote for "Tobacco Road". Wait until you hear Edgar sing
A journalist once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like being the greatest guitarist, he responded with; I don't know, you'll have to ask Johnny Winter. Both huge talent.
Winter was way better ! Hendrix was a flash in a pan .
That’s what’s up!
Laughing my ass off Jimi Hendrix was not a good guitarist he was a drug addict.
Absolutely Amazing Performance. I saw this at a Friend’s house on a Saturday Afternoon. Didn’t realize it’s Greatness until much later. Blown Away
And this is what can be achieved when you're a child that has to avoid sunlight. Stay inside and master musical instruments because you can't be out playing with you friends. Imagine if we has all these "Smart" devices back then...we'd probably never been able to experience this talent.
