I had the same experience. I was 13 when it came out and never was shown in my local theater and even if it was, I never would have gotten any theater to see it. I had to wait for the R rated version to show late night on Showtime the following year. I didn’t see the NC17 version until the day I turned 18 when I purchased it on VHS. It may hold the record as MGM’s most rented or purchased video but as a lifelong Verhoeven fan since RoboCop (first seeing it way too young at 5 years old), this is far from his best work. I’ve read that this as sort of an afterthought with Carolco Pictures as an afterthought when his other project Crusade (an epic film that would have re-teamed him with Schwarzenegger from Total Recall) collapsed before actually production over a budget argument, hence making Showgirls instead with the same studio that also went with Cutthroat Island instead of financing Crusade.
