I Broke Raft With Too Much Speed

- There's just never enough speed. I found a way to get past that previous speed limit so all I need to do is keep adding sails. Obviously that has a few challenges to it, like running into islands constantly and even getting stuck in one or two somehow. After working out the many kinks I finally have a raft of adequate speed, it moves so fast that things dropped off instantly disappear. If only there was a mod for more speed.

@@cyberneticsquid But there are only a handful of games that support multiple GPUs. So the only reason to have 2 GPUs in 2020 is of your doing heavy computational tasks in which case he should have gotten a Quadro, or if he can find a way to record with 1 GPU, and play with the other.

the reason the island stuck thing happened is because of the way the game works it goes like this:
move(speed)
if touching island: stop
this kind of programming works because usually you are going slow enough that the front will get detected first
you were going so fast that by the time collision detection kicked in, you were _already_ half way through the island

DF the reason it seemed so much faster than 42 and why things were behaving weirdly is because the raft turns about it's geometric center at a fixed rotation speed (in degrees/second), ignoring size and wheel placement.
Raft speed is only the net forward motion of the raft. With a long enough raft, you could almost certainly break the physics entirely, or the speed of light, whichever comes first.
Gotta hate it when you bump into an island, go into reverse to get unstuck, only to find out you backed up and got mysteriously lodged into another island. XP

The betterFPS mod has a option to turn raft collision checking off when building, it will stop the lagging while building huge rafts

Today I learned DF understands the true speed of 42.7.
To avoid further island-raft merging compliations, you should try stacking sails vertically rather than horizontally.

I haven’t watched one of his videos in almost a year, and I don’t know why, his content is amazing, and his name is a description of it.
For the record, the way you got your raft stuck on the island is a bug in the Unity engine's physics system. While the position of objects is calculated every frame, collisions are only calculated every few frames. But you were moving so fast that by the time the collision was calculated the raft was already inside the island.

Hey you could build vertically, a skyscraper of sails, so that the raft isn't too big on the water and thus is more steerable
Every time DF breaks small part of a game, he's getting closer to his laugh. I can hear his giggles which is wholesome but I'm still waiting for his laugh...
If anyone is curious about how the island got stuck on the raft:
The game loads islands a specific distance from the raft, and once you're a certain distance it despawns those islands if it's too far away.
DF made the raft so big, an island hit the raft's spawn distance, but since the raft is bigger than the spawn distance it spawned directly into the raft.
I would've loved to see what it was like to be in the water with the llamas and see the front of this raft zoom by

You should try to make a long raft and steer it so that the far end moves super fast
