I live in CT. My severance is based on two months of my salary plus a prorated amount of my annual bonus. I was let go on 11/21/24. I received one half of my severance payout on 12/10/24 and will receive the other half in January probably around the same time. 1/10/25 give or take a day or two. Should I wait until after the second payment to apply for unemployment or should I go ahead and apply now?

Hello! An offset is a consideration or amount that diminishes or balances the effect of something else. In this case, when severance pay is considered an offset, it is counted against an employee’s ability to receive unemployment benefits. Thanks! Any insights on North Carolina? Also, does delaying your severance by 6 -8 months help your chances of receiving unemployment?
