    I thought you wanted to leave the skirt, lower branches, to shade the ground and keep the soil more moist.

    try using a backpack sprayer and add a few contents of white chalkboard marker. You can also add some liquid seaweed to the mix as well. The white chalk will dry an opaque white and it is easy to apply.

    I planted a dozen small avos last yr. in more sun than recommended, zone 9a, far NorCali, painting the limbs as they grew saved me from having to shade them much at all other then late afternoon shade which they get anyway.

    Good video, I would definitely use pruners though, a nice clean cut will heal quickly, snapping off branches will often leave a raggedy end which will take longer to heal...

    I really appreciate you and your father's wisdom regarding avocado trees. I can't remember which cultivar I have, but it is grafted and embarking on its third year. It has one huge single fruit that is still hard. Do I need to harvest it for it to ripen?
    I am in zone 10 and this tree is developing some really long horizontal branches with uprights spouting along the length of them. The tree is loaded with leaf buds on every tip. If and when should I pinch these off? There's no trouble with space, I am just used to pruning a peach tree which tends to crack if you let its arms grow too wide.

    Might I suggest you thin your banana trees to the main tree, and only keep one follower. This will give bigger bunches and stronger healthier plants. You could transplant some of the better suckers and start a new stand.

    I want to get another avocado tree but Evergreen never really has any. Maybe a handful of sickly haas, but that’s it. Where are you getting some of yours?

      Clausen nursery in Vista is a great place to buy avocado trees, that’s where I got my Reed. Maddock nursery in Fallbrook is also a very good place to buy avocado trees, they have thousands. I got my 2 lamb Hass and my Sir prize Hass at Maddock. Clausen is closer and they have a nice website if you want to see what they have.

      So Cal backyard Orchard thank you! I have a lush fuerte that is doing phenomenally and a haas that is very bare and slow to grow. I was going to move the haas to a better spot in my yard, near the fuerte, but I heard moving it will kill it. I put iv organic on it to keep it from burning.

    Why are you leaving stubs? It's makes it more difficult for the tree to compartmentalize the wound. You should also prune to correct major structural defects.

    • @caseG80
      @caseG80 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DJ Chancla wood chips or mulch provide cover for the soil keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They provide a home for all the soil life gives the small bugs something to eat as well as the soil food web and wood chips have shown to add antibiotics for the soil. Good way to look at it and what we are trying to accomplish is how nature does it you never see bare dirt in a thriving forest. Cheers

    Ey brother, I have two avocado seedlings, but I noticed that they can take the full sun better than my grafted ones. I was just wondering if you knew something about that

    • @socalbackyardorchard3768
      @socalbackyardorchard3768  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ariel Cortez yes I have noticed the same thing, I have a seedling tree that has never sunburnt. Seedlings are hardy. They protect themselves from sunburn because they have a normal branching structure. Bud wood for grafting is normally taken from the tips of branches, that’s why the grafted trees have a open spreading type growth habit that leaves wood exposed to the sun.

    Enjoy watching your videos bro, especially the ones on avacados. I have a couple questions I was hoping you may help me out with. Back in November I bought and planted a Hass avocado tree in a 15 gal ...I would say about 6 ft tall 4 ft wide full ,thick, healthy and happy.
    Though not strong enough to stand on its own I took the nursery stake off and restaked it myself so I can have room to sway and move the wind to build a strong root system. And my concern that I have now is that this avocado tree has set so much fruit I must have counted at least 200 little baby avocados on this thing. I just don't know if that's normal and let the tree be or if I should thin it out cuz it seems to be having trouble putting out New Growth I've noticed that the growth is starting from the bottom of the tree and it's working its way up, at the top it's bare right now. So what do you think I should do should I let the tree be or should I thin it out and if I thin it out should I thin it out completely or can I leave some food on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated bro thanks

    • @socalbackyardorchard3768
      @socalbackyardorchard3768  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eulogio Garcia let it be bro, no need to thin out avocados. Avocados will drop fruit on their own if it’s too much. Be careful with sunburn, if their isn’t too much growth on the top you may need to protect it with shade cloth or paint it.

    What is different between seedling ang grafting plant about fruting avocado?

    • @LaneyBGood
      @LaneyBGood 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maya Pirati if you grow from seed expect fruit in 13-15 years. Grafted trees are new rootstock with a mature tree branch grafted onto it. Fruit on grafted tree is more like 2-3 year wait.

      Marina Vega most likely your not watering the tree enough make sure there’s plenty of mulch or compost even some horse manure can work well keep it a foot away from trunk. And water it often avocados have very shallow feeder roots that need to be kept moist and when the humidity is low avocados need double the water. I’m in riverside smack in the middle of the strongest Santa Ana winds and I keep my trees doing great with tons of water luckily I’m on well water but lots of mulch never cleaning under the tree and watering some times every day or every other keeps them looking great. I’ve never seen a issue of over watering yet they are big drinkers in are climate. Cheers
