Chosen Men - Keeping the 95th Rifles Simple! [How I Paint Things]

  • The 95th Rifles - also known as the Greenjackets, or the Grasshoppers - are probably one of the most famed and feted light infantry units throughout the world. Painting their distinctive green uniforms isn't a chore... especially if you're willing to forego absolutely strident accuracy and take up the mantle of "Uniform Isn't!"
The video where I 'go overboard' in painting a face, hopefully queued up to the right moment! • Birthday Bonanza! Easy...

Literally been looking for 95th Rifles painting tutorials for the past few weeks. I've been binging the Sharpe TV series again and was thinking, 'I wish Sonic Sledgehammer had a painting tutorial for this.'
    Low and behold.

Mixed strong tone with Matt varnish once too, totally by accident meant to use medium but grabbed the wrong bottle! Didn't turn out too terribly!

Just painted my first batch of these and I also used Luftwaffe Camo Green. It seems a good match. Really fun miniatures to paint.

It's the stretch of time he's been playing Sharpe that averages out his death count, I think.

For what it's worth, I looked up the hex code for Rifle Green a while back (444C38, if you're curious), and then checked Encycolorpedia for the closest match I could find when it came to miniature paints. The Vallejo Luftwaffe Camo Green (434F38) that you picked was the closest, and comes in at a delta E of 1.98, which means you're unlikely to notice the difference unless you closely compare the two side by side. (Reaper Master Olive Drab has the same hex code, by the way, if you prefer their paints and can get them.)

The video comes at exactly the right time. I've been pushing 20 Riflemen around on my desk for 2 months without knowing how best to start. Thank you for the tutorial and your work.

Vallejo German Grey is such a neat color, it can look both blue and black in different places on the same mini. It was out of stock for so long where I buy paints, but now that I have it, it is such an enjoyable color to play with.

A simple but effective uniform, they were one of the first (regular) units of UK to employ rifles on the battlefield, and their weapons were more shorter than regular muskets, hence their "sword" bayonets. After all, before industrial revolution, uniforms' colours were very theorical, and fading could happen in weeks or less, expecially under strong sun, as in Spain, so dark green could be any colour's shade, also if some brands have a Napoleonic's section.

Don’t mention the uniform colours, it only encourages “Them”. I’m no expert but in one of the books Cornwall describes the riflemen as, British coats, French packs, and Spanish trousers. As long as the jacket is some sort of darkish green the rest doesn’t matter.

A great tutorial, you are very right about the lack of uniformity as campaigning has its effect on tunics etc and reminder I have the sharpe figures from brigade games stashed somewhere in the lead pile.

I've got a feeling that for once the metal units would be slightly easier to paint; having moulded trim on their cuffs would have made that a bit simpler than having to guesstimate!

Applying a base layer of paint to aid with the way the later layers adhere to the miniature and provide depth to the colour?
    That's undercoating!

Bastards!!! LOL. Tremendous guide. I've gone a little off pieste with this one. I'm following your prep guide from the British napoleonic infantryman. Primed white, with the special wash and the dry brush praxati. It's worked so well for me for my line battalions so I'm keeping the method. Also because I'm doing 60th rifles for my Black Powder rifle company. So using Leviadon blue for the trousers and dark angels green for the jacket. Everything else I'm following your guide here which as always is extremely useful. I will be building a 95th unit later for both Black Powder and Sharp Practice so will be following this guide for that project. Will you do French Voltigiers at some point and more Napoleonics?
