He's pointing out he can read because he's betting Sharpe cannot. Sharpe seems to consider responding to Harris, then says nothing. He has just been underestimated, but he's not going to reveal that yet.
I remember noticing it and hoping it wouldn't annoy me from watching, every scene seemed to have him recovering from a long run lol, luckily I got over it

Really strong work by the costuming department. Note how each soldier's uniform is rumpled in a different way, holes, missing buttons, open seams. They tell a story of their own and give depth to the characters.

The swap is also the reason Gold is so weird (They couldn't use the original script written because of legal issues.) and why Sharpe has it jacket un done for much of the first 2 episodes, It was Tailored to fit Paul not Sean. If you look up the Channel History Hack they have loads of podcasts taking to the cast of Sharpe.

Nah it’s more that he knows exactly what his life has been since that is also Sharpe’s background. In the books he’s an orphan that joined at 16 (ish doesn’t know his birthday so couldn’t be sure). He might feel bad for him knowing what that life is but more likely he’s seeing himself and reacting to how depressing that list sounds.
I like to think Sharpe's feeling sorry for himself. Each member of his new command is worse than the last: a thief, a poacher, a cad, and finally a waif. Having already formed a low opinion of Harper, he's thoroughly unimpressed by the 'Chosen Men'. "Well, I didn't choose you," he mockingly tells them.

I couldnt imagine myself trying to shoot a hat thrown in air with a baker rifle. The timing from when the lit pan to the charge going off must make this even harder.
This show was so low-budget that they kept that prop hat with the hole and re-used it in the scene where Sharpe and the men meet Sweet William. (BTW I made that up, but you believed it, and it may well be true.)
The fact that he's Irish is irrelevant. None of them "volunteered" out of patriotism: they are there for the regular pay. Life was so hard at the bottom of the social ladder -- whether you were Irish or English -- that risking life and limb in the army seems like a good bargain.

It was not Britain's fault the war devolved into a stalemate, but the improvements the British army made as a result of the Boer War stopped an easy German victory as in the Franco Prussian war. The French made similar improvements. The problem was that doctrine had evolved to the point that it was a slugging match because everyone was on a similar level. If you're saying Britain should have not gotten involved for the above reason, thats probably true. But Britain certainly wasnt meat grinding its army. Thats a myth.

I mean, the similarities are definetly there. Gaunt may not be "from the ranks", but he and Sharpe are basically the same. Witty, strong, great and brave leaders, annoyed by superior officers and a hand with the ladies
I like how Sharpe is really an NCO with the rank of an officer. It makes his style of leadership much more hands-on instead of letting Harper take care of it, like traditional officer-NCO leadership.

Re-watching this, I'm struck how Sharpe says a lot of the same stuff Hakeswill once said - Sharpe's model for leadership is still unformed. And you can kind of see that Sharpe might have been tempted to be a petty tyrant, too.

@The505Guys Not as Rifles. Essentially skirmishers. Dressed differently to distinguish themselves. Also, due to the style of fighting they were expected to engage in, camoflague was a bit more important.
Back in the day it was probably more just to be sure they were all, at least, somewhat coherent The one guy saying he could read not getting one tongue lashing? That was an exceptional and rare skill among lower class men back then.
Production values are very high for this series. Especially for a british television drama of this era. I'd wager that this would have been the most expensive British drama at this point in history .

I like how Sharpe is really an NCO with the rank of an officer. It makes his style of leadership much more hands-on instead of letting Harper take care of it, like traditional officer-NCO leadership.

Well, Sean Bean has Always said he'd love to do more episodes and let's face it, we'd hate it if anyone else played him wouldn't we? They did do some more in the 2000's ( challange and Peril), let's hope this channel gets the word out on this little gem of a show, you never know....
Probably a ressurgence of people wanting wholesome stories again with strong male influences pushing through the algorithms, hopefully that's the case
Re-watching this, I'm struck how Sharpe says a lot of the same stuff Hakeswill once said - Sharpe's model for leadership is still unformed. And you can kind of see that Sharpe might have been tempted to be a petty tyrant, too.

@The505Guys Not as Rifles. Essentially skirmishers. Dressed differently to distinguish themselves. Also, due to the style of fighting they were expected to engage in, camoflague was a bit more important.

Back in the day it was probably more just to be sure they were all, at least, somewhat coherent The one guy saying he could read not getting one tongue lashing? That was an exceptional and rare skill among lower class men back then.
Sharpe great storytelling and acting on a shitty budget but it's a great series.
Production values are very high for this series. Especially for a british television drama of this era. I'd wager that this would have been the most expensive British drama at this point in history .

The rifle as originally manufactured was expected to be capable of firing at a range of up to 200 yards (183 meters) with a high hit rate. The Baker rifle was used by skirmishers facing their opponents in pairs, sniping at the enemy either from positions in front of the main lines or from hidden positions in heights overlooking battlefields.
The accuracy of the rifle in capable hands is most famously demonstrated at the Battle of Cacabelos (during Moore's retreat to Corunna in 1809) by the action of Rifleman Thomas Plunkett (or Plunket) of the 1st Battalion, 95th Rifles, who shot French General Colbert at an unknown but long range (as much as 600 yards (550 m) according to some sources). He then shot Colbert's aide-de-camp, Latour-Maubourg, who went to the aid of his general, suggesting that the success of the first shot was not due to luck.[1][3]
That rifleman Plunkett and others were able to regularly hit targets at ranges considered to be beyond the rifle's effective range speaks for both their marksmanship and the capabilities of the rifle.
It's the British equilivent of the Kentucky Rifle. The Baker can use a bayonet whereas the Kentucky can't use a bayonet.
The Baker rifle as seen issued was the third pattern of the design and fired a .62 caliber ball. Earlier models actually fired the same .75 caliber ball as the British infantry musket and had a longer barrel. The shorter barrel length subsequent meant the rifle was issued with a long, brass-handle knife to give the weapon the same overall length of the infantry musket so the rifleman could still form and fight in close formation (such as square formation to resist cavalry attacks). This also means Rifle Regiments issue the order "Fix Swords" instead of bayonets.
It was wicked accurate in the the right hands, with a greased leather patch wrapped around the ball to impart spin from the rifling and provide a marksman with a reliable weapon. And a Green Jacket was trained to be. Accounts have on soldier hitting a French general from a distance of at least 500 meters. Then he shot an aide-de-camp assisting the wounded officer to prove the point.
