Did you know Rio

  • Did you know Rio is actually based on a true story? In the movie, Blu and Jewel are Spix’s macaws. Less than 100 of these exist today, and are essentially extinct in the wild. About 9 years before the film came out, a Spix’s macaw named Presley was discovered and eventually given to a captive breeding program. Despite attempts to breed, the eggs were infertile and Presley later passed away. Safe to say the movie had a much happier ending.

They are not extinct! They were just extinct in the wild. But now the breeding programme has been successful and there are several hundred of Spix’s macaws. Recently 8 were released in the wild and monitored, which has been successful. They plan to release 11 more in December.

The reason they went extinct in the wild is becsuse of the illigal pet trade (among other human caused problems). They are no longer extinct in the wild. The movie didn't just bring awareness, it brought donations and several pairs have now been released from a breeding program.

Plus it wouldn’t be that hard to come up with a plot centered around a Rio De Janireo inspired region since you could easily make the plot at least in part about the smuggling of rare and valuable Pokémon (I know, I took that from the movie Rio but that topic has never been done in the main series games) It’s a shame really that there doesn’t seem to be a huge demand for a Rio De Janireo inspired region but hopefully we will get one someday.

To be more exact there are 3 species of Blue Macaw, we have the Spix, Hyacinthinus, and Glaucus. Of these 3, the only one that is "officially" extinct is the Glaucus, they were literally a small version of the Hyacinthinus, while the Spix is not exactly part of the same family of birds.
The last time a Glaucus supposedly was seen was during the 60's, the IUCN classifies it as critically endangered, while in 2003 the "Ministry of Nature" declared it officially extinct. Despite the ministry's statement, we are not sure that if it is really extinct, its natural habitat is a fairly huge region, in addition, since the 1960s there have been other rumors of sightings of the species and the supposed commercialization of live specimens in Sweden, Holland and even in Brazil, it is believed that it is very likely that the species could be alive, but in captivity.

Last time i watched this movie and got to the ending i cried because i was so lonely and these birds shared a kiss before flying together. Animated birds have a better love life than me

Another fact: Director Carlos Saldanha initially envisioned the movie about a penguin washed ashore in Rio but that idea was scrapped because they didn’t want another movie about penguins such as Happy Feet and Surfs Up.
