JAWS: THE REVENGE - Movie Review

  • Jaws: The Revenge was released in 1987, directed by Joseph Sargent. It tells the story of Ellen Brody going to the Bahamas, while a shark is pursuing her family... for revenge! Does Jaws 4 end the franchise on a satisfying note or will the experience end up as shallow as puddle of water?

The fundamental flaw of this film is that it takes a premise that could work thematically and treats it literally. The shark works as a monstrous symbol of recurring family trauma, but all of this revenge stuff should be in Ellen's head. Objectively, the string of shark attacks should be a pure coincidence, even if Ellen subjectively takes them as anything but coincidence. And really, there's enough room to interpret it that way until the ending, when the shark decides to leap out of the water and strike at Ellen on the boat. If the movie could have held onto the ambiguity of the situation throughout the entire runtime, the premise would have a decent _out_ for those who can't buy into the outlandish magical realism of a vengeful shark (in other words, most people).

That would actually make the film more interesting. I think that's what Jaws 2 tried to do, having Brody paranoid and alert. But just like you said, it wasn't utilized very well. I've been told there was a movie novelization of Jaws 4 and while it gives more context, it's still extremely silly.

The best part about Jaws 4 was the Nintendo video game.

Hi Matt. New subscriber and I have some interesting info about this film. The novelization sticks fairly close to the final film, although it does contain some extra subplots, The novel contains a subplot in which Hoagie is a government agent and he transports laundered money. The only reference to this in the film is when Michael Brody asks, "What do you do when you're not flying people?" to which Hoagie replies, "I deliver laundry." In the novel, the character of Jake is ultimately killed by the shark; Jake was originally supposed to die in the film, but the script was changed to allow him to survive.
The novelization suggests that the shark may be acting under the influence of a vengeful voodoo witch doctor (who has a feud with the Brody family), and the shark's apparent revenge has magical implications. Taken from the earlier drafts of the screenplay, the shark is directed by a voodoo curse laid by Papa Jacques, a Haitian witch doctor.
Hank Searls. the writer of the novelization, explained to the Poughskeepsie Journal that "in the book, I don't contend that the shark is thinking at all. That's why I've got the voodoo guy standing in for him." He also says that it works in the book, but it was "too corny" for the film. At one point in the theatrical version, Michael Brody says, "Come on, sharks don't commit murder. Tell me you don't believe in that voodoo."

Oh my gosh, if all that is true, it's still ridiculous as hell, but that would at least explain SO much. Thank you for the info and glad you liked my video! :D

as always another good review matt, I am sorry you had to watch this film, as a kid i enjoyed it but when i watched it when I was older I was like this is not as good as I remember lmao x3 the 4th is the weakest one out of all the films, i enjoyed the first 2 the most, but I enjoyed your review matt :3

Thank you! Yeah, as a kid, I remember liking certain scenes, mostly the first shark attack, but as a kid I was really bored. The movie does have a "so bad it's good" charm to it though. More than I can say for Jaws 3 where I was bored throughout. Thank you as always for your support! :D

@@TheRealMediaMatt indeed I have to admit you explained the first shark attack scene pretty well how it would prob feel from a real attack disorienting etc, I was always upset they killed shawn off so early in the film tho x3 but his scene was one of the best in the film

@@sonicDhedgehog Thank you! It was the one of the few things that stuck with me when I first saw it and thought it was done fairly well. And I agree, seeing Sean go so quickly was sad. The Brody's have gone through enough shark attacks lol

You should make a prison movie mini-series, with movies like Shawshank and The Green Mile. I think it would be interesting to see the different takes on prison life in different movies.
