SPOILER: Hazel finds out she's a wizard, and with her wizard friends Isaac and Augustus she saves the world from the incarnation of world suck known as Lord Voldemort.
I read all of John Green's books in the winter of 2013, six months after discovering vlogbrothers. Thank you, Nerdfighteria, for not spoiling any of them! They are terrific reads.
There's a line in this videos that gives me literal chills: "The Fault in Our Stars has been with me in some form for more than a decade, and I am so excited to... [share] it." I think that it reminds me that the books I read are written by real people, who care about their readers and their stories, and it's a very nice, connected feeling.
Freshman year I was reading the book for the first time and when I was on page 80 something, a girl leaned over into my ear and told me the ending... I was beyond enraged at her.
I was one of those 1000 who bought Looking for Alaska, and I have to say a HUGE thank you to all Nerdfighters who didn't spoil it for me. Thanks for being awesome fellow readers :)
I bought all of John's books (except for WGWG because I had already read it) and I allowed my friends to borrow them before I read them since I have been drowning in homework. And some of them didn't realize that I hadn't read Looking For Alaska and texted me a question about the ending. John, I too hate spoilers.
Mr. John Green, I read your novel over the course of the past few days because a) the movie's out, b) friends of mine could not stop talking about it, and c) you're an awesome-seeming guy and Crash Course helped a ton with the Cold War (thank you so much for that! Your videos are exceptions...like the Mongols!). However, while I was reading the content advisory on IMDb, I spoiled the book for myself which I immediately regretted; you could say that the fault was not in my stars, dear Brutus, but in myself that I am the underling who made a foolish decision. But, as for the problem of spoilers, perhaps it is not the epidemic we see it as. Knowing the ending of your book, I could appreciate more the literary elements and foreshadowing you put in TFiOS in the same way knowing the nature of Chillingworth in "The Scarlet Letter" or hearing the fate of Uncle Tom before reading "Uncle Tom's Cabin" made me appreciate those characters and those works-at-large more. In the latter two scenarios, I felt knowing what would happen to Tom made his actions more noble and appreciated him throughout the novel rather than after the fact, and learning Chillingworth's symbolism made him, in a way, tragic, so I empathized for the villain. So what I'm trying to say, Mr. Green, is that your work stands (and will continue to stand) the test of time, and I'll put my chips on it being considered a modern classic before long. Though spoilers happen and it does detract the SLIGHTEST bit from dramatic tension, it is not a lost cause since the best authors (and editors) leave the nuggets for us the readers to discover, and knowing a character's fate helped me realize those early on. After all, Shakespeare put dramatic irony in Romeo and Juliet, and Julius Caesar--still considered the greats! Thank you for the novel, and godspeed in the future!
Spoiler: When Augustus finds out he isn't actually 7, he goes to Hamburg and travels back in time to 1789 to try and kill Robespierre and instate a constitutional monarchy. Speaking of which Robespierre would be a brilliant candidate for the evil baby orphanage.
Bro are we even reading the same book Hazel is a cyborg that has to to make a choice of either saving Augustus by turning him into a cyborg like herself or letting him go even tho it would make her sad.
John I've read A WHOLE FREAKING LOT OF BOOKS but out of all the books I've ever read...yours made me cry. Please never stop blessing us with your beautiful and amazing mind. I wanted to like, say that to you on FB but I was too nervous so I did it here which lessened my nerves.
John: I've been rereading your books while waiting for TFIOS and wanted to thank you for creating them. You have enclosed a type of emotional depth in all of your books that cannot be replicated. I first started reading your books three years ago and they have remained my favorites ever since. Thank you.
My friend spoiled the book for me before I even bought it.. Yeah, but I finally bought the book a couple days ago, and it's amazing! (Btw: That's a huge compliment because if you knew me, you would know that I hate reading with a burning passion.) ANNDDDD THE MOVIE COMES OUT THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR ME!
Whenever someone claims they hate reading, I shed a lugubrious tear for humanity and enter a languished state of pity and sorrow. Reading should never be seen as a negative thing. Literature is one of the most miraculous, beautiful constructs of learning accomplished by humankind. There's a book out there for everyone :)
I always feel sad when I her people saying they don't like reading. Like a deep sighing sadness. For me, saying you don't like books is like saying you don't like listening to music . EVERYONE has some type of music they like because there's so many genres. For some reason people over-look that the exact same thing applies to books.
Harlequin Hoatzin There are certain types of books I can deal with, but i'm just one of those people who can sit and read a book. I don't enjoy reading. I'd rather watch something being acted out than reading it and imagining it inside my head. Being someone who loves theatre and acting, I enjoy seeing others reenact things such as what would be in the book that i'm reading. I understand where you're coming from though; reading is an important part of life and it improves vocabulary. I do read. I read a lot actually. Do I enjoy it? No. Does it matter if I enjoy it or not? No. It doesn't because reading is very important, but like I said, I don't enjoy it. Movies give me a certain type of thrill, and I can really connect to it. I can't do that as well with a book. It's a lot easier for me to comprehend everything while watching a movie. Do you see what I mean? Thanks for your reply, though. :)
I read Looking for Alaska last week. It was amazing! I literally read it in a matter of hours because I could not put it down. I liked it so much I went out and bought An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars. Your writing is truly amazing and, John Green, you are now one of my very favorite authors. Thanks for writing such awesome novels!
As a musician, I really appreciate that you don't end your sing-a-ma-jig concerts on half cadences. Always authentic cadences!!! Even though you think you can't sing, (which you can) you have great ears for music.
Spoiler: When Hazel and Gus are in Amsterdam, Gus tells Hazel that he has... one eye. The other one is painted on. He's a cyclops. Always has been. Can't believe she didn't notice that only his left eye blinks. Come to think of it, Nobody did. Mythology jokes? Anybody? Bueller?
Trying to figure out the significance of Jan 10 -- outside of the date in LfA; checking Wikipedia I found something that seems oddly relevant to this video and the mention of George RR Martin: On Jan 10, 1645 the Archbishop William Laud is beheaded at the Tower of London.
I bought Looking For Alaska a few days ago. I couldn't put it down.I can't believe I waited so long to read it. It is one of my favorite books. It was just amazing. You are a brilliant writer. I am so excited to read The Fault in Our Stars!
Read tfios in 2days, googled john green's other books, read LfA in 2 days again and discovered vlogbrothers (which was my intro to vlogs actually, I only came to youtube for songs before that) and haven't looked back since. My best friend and I became closer because of tfios and this channel and this community, and I'm ever so thankful for all of those things
I've read it 3 times (going to read it a fourth and i just finished it today) and I've cried every time! I was reading the last page and my eyes were just like "HOLD! HOLD! ... *read last line* RELEASE THE WATERWORKS!!" and I was like "NO! I'M SITTING IN LATIN! YOU WILL NOT LEAK EYES!" GAH! I both love and hate the way you make me feel when I read your books. And I am so thankful that you and Hank and the books have come into my life. Thank you for creating such awesome. Thank you so much.
I was given a Kindle on Christmas day, and promptly purchased Paper Towns. Started reading it yesterday, finished it today. I'm now EVEN MORE EXCITED for the arrival of my copy of TFIOS, because although I always had faith in John Green as a brilliant author, I now have undeniable evidence that my faith was well placed. :)
I didn't even listen to the second chapter reading you did to not ruin it for myself.. I can't wait to get it!! I'm sorry for the leak, John, but I'm thankful that Nerdfightaria is such a great community.
I'VE FINALLY CAUGHT UP ON ALL THE VLOGBROTHERS VIDEOS!!! I started this summer and I'm done at last! Sorry. I've been dying to be able to say that for ages. John, I've never read one of your books because I'm trying to get my hands on Looking for Alaska before any of the others. I want to be able to watch you evolve as a writer. However, I'm very excited for TFiOS. I'm glad that everyone's being so nice about the mix-up. I wish you great success when it's officially released. :)
I love how cool nerdfighters are about not spoiling the book for everyone else, everyone here is so awesome! (also, please could you have singamajigs in more of your videos?)
Hey John, loyal fan here. Just wanted you to know I got 2 pre orders ordered for myself. One from Amazon.ca and one from Amazon.com. I really had to make sure I got a signed copy so I ordered from both of the sites. And as an update I just called Coles (Canadian Barnes and Noble) and they're going to have 6 copies in tomorrow, so I'm gonna up up early in anticipation for the book. Thank you so much for being an amazing author, person and friend to the nerdfighter community. We truly care. DFTBA.
John, you are one classy gentleman. Figuratively, I can't wait for TFIOS, but literally, I assure you I can. I too shall have no truck with spoilers, but when I do receive my book, wild horses won't be able to tear me away from it. Merry Christmas, sir.
So, I finished Looking for Alaska today (loved it) and then I watched this video and FREAKED OUT because of the Jan 10th thing. Also I have read An Abundance of Katherine (which I also loved) oddly enough both of these I read/ordered before realizing that you were the author. Now I impatiently wait for Jan 10th so I can get The Fault In Our Stars.
I'm sorry John but I had to read your book when it arrived at my doorstep. I was already more than halfway through by the time I watched this video, and i could not stop reading. It was amazing. I hope that doesn't count as a spoiler.
Oh my goodness I'm so smegging excited!! EEeeeeeeeee! The only book I've ever been more excited about was HP7! Thank you Nerdfighters for not spoiling the book :)
I just downloaded TFiOS to my Kindle Fire and, four chapters in, found myself smiling and relating with a book more than I should. Kudos, John. I'm going to love this book.
Finished reading the TFIOS a few minutes ago. it was the first book I have ever had to scream at. Good job John Green. That was an amazing book! I'm looking forward to reading more of your books.
I got this morning! I was going to keep it in its package but my anticipation for the book outweighed the good in me, so I opened it. It's so beautifully blue, the cover. I could stare at its fantasticness all day. I only checked to see the signature, I promise! (it's greeen!)
Dear John, I literally just recieved your new book TFiOS in the mail. I was so confused when i recieved a package in the mail and opened it. Once it was opened, I quietly started to freak out. I opened the cover to see what signature i got (it's a red J-scribble, yay!) then immediantley shut it! I am so excited to read the book but I will wait until January 10th! Best Wishes, Michaela
I honestly don't mind spoilers for anything. As long as the story is good it feels worth it to get there on my own even if I know what will happen. On what happened to John (even though it is in the past): that sucks! I am so sorry that happened to you! Don't let it get you down!
So...I am a 'new' Nerdfighter, and I preordered TFiOS. But while waiting for it to come to me, I checked out Paper Towns from my local library. Lo and behold, in the book cover, hidden behind it was a post-it note that said DFTBA, and talked about your tour on TFiOS. This is why I officially love Nerdfighteria. Plus the book was amazing, and I am currently reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson. :)
This is interesting to me because I hadn't really thought about how spoilers change the way you read a book. It does make sense that John would want the book unspoiled as much as possible. happy holidays
I am UBER excited to get TFiOS, I will receive a copy when I go to Tour de Nerdfighting in Santa Monica, I'm super-psyched!!! And from the two chapters you posted, I'm already falling in love, can't wait for more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I preordered TFIOS and did not receive it early,TY! Instead I am finishing my 1st reading of Paper Towns (BTW frakking love it) and will then read Looking for Alaska which between work and my other things should put me only waiting a few days to receive my copy of TFIOS. I love that John is adamant about no spoilers, I truly enjoy things better when I am not spoiled. So thanks 4 not Spoiling it! I
Looking for Alaska is literally my favourite book. I will be so heartbroken if someone posts spoilers and I see them. Thank you nerdfighters who got it early and are pledging to not read it until January 10th, you guys are awesome :D
@vlogbrothers John, I admit to an almost complete ignorance when it comes to the book seller's issues. I hope no one, least of all you, loses too much money! I love that you care so much about our experience as readers so much! I enjoyed your reading of the first 2 chapters immensely! I will not skip over them when I read the book, nor enjoy reading them less. I agree that my experience of them will be different, but not diminished (rather enhanced, I think). I do agree that starting a new b
John, I just got both Looking For Alaska, and Paper Towns, I am looking forward to reading them, and soon The Fault In Our Stars. Merry Christmas/Winter Solstice/Whatever religous beliefs you hold, to all the nerdfighters out there.
I bought Looking For Alaska this autumn, and preordered TFiOS in November, and I got Paper Towns for Christmas. I also got gift certificates worth a total of about £85, so I'm gonna buy more of your books through book shops, rather than directly from Amazon. Hopefully that'll help you get more readers in Norway.
When I first watched all Vlogbrothers videos in order nearly a year ago, I had not yet read LFA, so I did not recognise the importance of January 10. Now that I'm watching this again, it's simply lovely. I think she would have liked it.
i got looking for alaska and paper towns for christmas... i just read looking for alaska and i loved it!:D about to start paper towns, and im waiting for the 10th of january when the fault in our stars arrives:3 cant wait!
I received my copy of this book early and took it as a blessing in disguise. I left for Japan on the 4th of January to live there for 4 months(IT'S AMAZING HERE BTW) and wouldn't of had this when it came out on the 10th. The fact that it got sent to me early gave me the opportunity to take it with me on the plane and read it there(14hr flight=1 happy reader) and I held back from all online commenting of anything even this until now. I'm happy at my luck in its early release! DFTBA!
I was one of the lucky people who got to read the embargoed title about a month ago. This is the first time I've talked about it on the internet at all, and I didn't even tell my boyfriend what happens. I've actually been wanting to write something to you, John Green, just to say I loved it, and I think it's your best one yet (and that's saying something!). And I think you should keep writing female protagonists.
This week, I re-read Looking For Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, and Will Grayson Will Grayson, just in preparation for January 10th. I love Nerdfighteria for not spoiling this book for me!
For Christmas, I got looking for Alaska, an abundance of kathrines, AND paper towns. I don't know much about them, which makes it even better. ......I'm so exited! ~DFTBA
Most of the people who pre-ordered it are Nerdfighters, which means they respect you and each others, and they won't spoil it for anyone else. I love this community so much
i initially pre-ordered your book and then, i went and bought it so i could see u on your book tour! so i will be reading it on the 10th and seeing u in georgia on the 15th :) . Also i went to barnes and nobles to buy an abundance of Katherine's, paper towns, or let it snow,(since i have read Will Grayson, Will Grayson and Looking for Alaska but they were also sold out which really sucked, but is awesome at the same time that so many people are buying your books
Ordered your book four days ago. It'll be released, and perhaps delivered, the day I think a very important make-or-break history project is also due. If the book doesn't come in then, that's okay because the due date for the project may be a couple days later than I'm thinking. No matter what happens in that book, I bet it'll help me Keep Calm (and hopefully DFTBA as well.)
I just finished reading Looking for Alaska yesterday and The Abundance of Katherines today. I'm buying Paper Towns on Saturday. ...I'm a little obsessed.
Actually, the people reading the book so far have done pretty well with not spoiling it. I have had most of the popular books I have decided to read spoiled for me, but I haven't had even a little bit of The Fault in our Stars spoiled for me yet! Great job, Nerdfighters! :D
We all respond to such a story differently. There was usually company around, something coming up, when I read the heaviest part of the story, so I couldn't afford to cry. But cry or not, the story weighed my heart down heavily, and I just kept turning the pages.
I can with confidence say there have been no spoilers, since it’s been 9 years since the book came out, and I still haven’t read it or watched the movie, and I have no idea what happens. Great job guys! :D
this video may be 8 years old but i just finished looking for Alaska and i went down a trail of videos and ended here my heart died when he said it was to be published on Jan 10th since its a major reference to looking for alaska wont spoil it but still loved it none the less
Aww that's such a bummer! Well I will definitely not spoil it for you then. But seriously I picked it up kind of randomly then finished it in about two days it was so hard to put down.
John!! My grandma gave me a 50 dollar gift card for amazon.com for Christmas. I used it to purchase your entire collection and pre-order The Fault In Our Stars. Needless to say this has been the best Christmas ever. Thank you for remembering to be awesome.
My heart swelled when I saw all of the pictures of TFiOS 'not existing'. Only the nerfighters would do something as awesome as this. You are a very lucky guy John!
@windowsforvista The whole point of this community is our amazing communication and cooperation, nerdfighters ARE the comments and the responses and the blogs and the good will of thousands of fans who could never fathom spoiling something so amazing.
SPOILER: Hazel finds out she's a wizard, and with her wizard friends Isaac and Augustus she saves the world from the incarnation of world suck known as Lord Voldemort.
I think your plots twisted XD

Spoiler alert: There is a person that is a main character and he/she does stuff
Damn it. And I was just about to read it, too. Day ruined, thanks a bunch
SPOILER: Fault In Our Stars is GOOD
Really loving these fake spoilers in the comments.
Holy shit I'm kidding.
Spoiler: Augustus falls into the chocolate river and gets sucked up a pipe.
This one's clever. I approve.
Freshman year I was reading the book for the first time and when I was on page 80 something, a girl leaned over into my ear and told me the ending... I was beyond enraged at her.
When I told my friend I was starting Harry Potter, he told me something from the seventh book.
Darth Vader is Hazel's father!
I was one of those 1000 who bought Looking for Alaska, and I have to say a HUGE thank you to all Nerdfighters who didn't spoil it for me. Thanks for being awesome fellow readers :)

I think you guys are at a farther part than me.. im at the part where issac and hazel arehaving a card duel with pegasus to savethe world.
Oh, yeah. Just after they discover that An Imperial Affliction is an analogy of when Rodney Mullen and Mika Hakkinen fought to the death.

That probably would have been a better way to work in the pun.
I noticed your pun, it was very clever.
Thanks :)
Haha lol

January 10th is an important date in looking for alaska.
Read TFIOS yesterday. Can I die now?
Yes, yes you can
no, you can't until you see the movie

Hey John
I wonder if you are worried about going bald due to the constant hair pulling?
Spoiler Alert!
Gus dies of Peep poisoning! He couldn't stop eating the Peeps!

I'm looking forward to reading more of your books.
half way through looking for alaska :D im so glad nobody has spoiled it yet, you re all so nice
I got this morning! I was going to keep it in its package but my anticipation for the book outweighed the good in me, so I opened it. It's so beautifully blue, the cover. I could stare at its fantasticness all day. I only checked to see the signature, I promise! (it's greeen!)
Dear John,
I literally just recieved your new book TFiOS in the mail. I was so confused when i recieved a package in the mail and opened it. Once it was opened, I quietly started to freak out. I opened the cover to see what signature i got (it's a red J-scribble, yay!) then immediantley shut it! I am so excited to read the book but I will wait until January 10th!
Best Wishes,
Michaela
I CAN'T WAIT.. I'VE BEEN SOO EXCITED SINCE CHRISTMAS!!!!!!
The pictures of the books bound up and "This does not exist until..." Made me cry. Nerdfighters are so made of awesome.
Happy Holidays John, Hank, and all Nerdfighter!! :D
TFIOS is the most fantastically eloquent book I have ever read. It is by far my favorite book. Thank you John for writing it.
i got looking for alaska and paper towns for christmas... i just read looking for alaska and i loved it!:D about to start paper towns, and im waiting for the 10th of january when the fault in our stars arrives:3 cant wait!
This book was spoiled for me and it was still easily my favorite book. Ever.
DFTBA!
Hauntingly beautiful sing-a-ma-jig outro.
On December 23, 2012, I finally made it to this video. One more year to go and I'll be all caught up! Happy holidays, Nerdfighters, and DFTBA
I am reading it, b I won't talk to anyone about it until a few days after January 10 that way people can process the book. I truly love it, thank you.
I think you very well may have some of the most loyal and caring fans in the world, and this makes me so proud to be a nerdfighter.
I ordered ALL of your books along with TFiOS. So I appreciate this video :)
Just pre-ordered TFiOS! So happy!
@aprilthecoolestever thank you for not spoiling the book to the rest of nerdfighteria, i can't wait to read the book!!! DFTBA!!
I am so excited for it, I would even go so far as to say I am more excited for January 10th than I am for Christmas :)
My mom preordered it for me as a Christmas present! Cannot wait to read it!
I love Nerdfighteria. i just makes me feel so warm and happy
An A #1 community, in our hearts.
I got my copy tonight! I'm so excited to read it.
this video may be 8 years old but i just finished looking for Alaska and i went down a trail of videos and ended here my heart died when he said it was to be published on Jan 10th since its a major reference to looking for alaska wont spoil it but still loved it none the less
I got mine today too, it haz a green signature! and I'm so tempted to read it but, it shall wait for 7 hrs.
Aww that's such a bummer! Well I will definitely not spoil it for you then. But seriously I picked it up kind of randomly then finished it in about two days it was so hard to put down.
I just pre-ordered this book and I can't wait to read it when it comes out.
I only hope I become that as great a writer as you are.
I haven't read your books yet, only reviews and your videos about them.
It's okay. Some people just don't cry as a reaction to upsetting stuff. Don't feel bad about it!
Having only just read Alaska over the today and yesterday I am very glad the title of this video was honest about no spoilers at all.
John!! My grandma gave me a 50 dollar gift card for amazon.com for Christmas. I used it to purchase your entire collection and pre-order The Fault In Our Stars. Needless to say this has been the best Christmas ever. Thank you for remembering to be awesome.
My Uncle preordered TFiOS for me for Christmas. So. Stoked.
