    So for people interested in Japanese tanto, here’s a quick breakdown. Tanto is the word referring to short sword/daggers usually with a blade less than 12inches. The Kwaiken/kaiken are small daggers primarily carried by women to defend or preserve her honor. So Kwaiken are technically tanto and tanto could be any of several blade shapes (sugata) most of Williams blade design’s (like the crkt) are osoraku zukuri blade shape. Most Kwaiken you see are shobu zukuri or hira zukuri. I would classify the civivi tamashi as an kanmuri otoshi zukuri. Hope you enjoyed the random info ✌🏻

      I have both Americanized tantos and the Japanese style or Kwaiken as they are called. I like both for different reasons. The Japanese style is really akin to a short sword. Even the blade steel. The shorter Americanized tantos are made out of typical knife steels, a wide variety of choices as this blade shape is very popular. I collect them and most of them sre strictly tactical, though you can use them to cut like any blade. Some take them camping or whatnot, though I have better knives for bushcraft/camping chores as I don't think the tanto is ideal for that.

    Liked your comments about muscle memory. I’ve carried an Al Mar SERE 2000 for most of two decades. With the company changing hands and my knife getting older, I started looking for a replacement. I bought an Off Grid Rhino, about the right size, but found myself relearning because it’s a flipper and I’m accustomed to thumb stud opening and liner/frame lock closing. Wanted super strength, so picked up a Cold Steel SR1 Lite. Easy to open, pocket clip tolerable after some mods, but it’s just a bit too big and it’s a back lock. You spoke about choils. I open 40 lb. plastic bags of wood pellets, swiping all the way across the top, doing my best to cut both layers. A pronounced choil, a flipper tab, even a guard built into the handle can catch or drag on the plastic. Makes me appreciate the sloped contour of the slight guard built into the SERE 2000 (as well as the pommel contour that lets me flick it with a finger & thumb grip when playing machete against a vine). If you know of a truly rugged knife that can satisfy a guy whose aging muscle memory has matched up to a SERE 2000 for nearly 20 years, please let me know. Thanks.

    I make sure to keep a sturdy fixed blade in my bedroom just in case i do need to escape.
    I live in california, and it plausable that if there were a big earth quake, i could get stuck in my room.
    If i need to dig my way through a wall or door, i havent found better candidates than the gerber strongarm or becker bk 2
    Both have demonstrations online of being used to breach doors, etc.
    Hell, someone even batoned a strongarm through a metal 55 gallon drum lid. Sure, the edge was wrecked, but it made it out the other side in one piece.
    Surely i could use mine to dig through the wood and drywall in my house during an emergency.

    Main reason why not all folders have finger choils is because not everyone wants or needs to have a finger choil on their folders. To me they're silly, specifically the enlarged sharpening choil that fits only thin fingers and are uncomfortable and sharp. Choils to me only make sense if you are making a compact knife like the spyderco native and chaparral.

    Hey DCA&Crew, I'm a utilitarian when it comes to cutlery. I have a few "fine" knives but most of my cutlery (like myself) show the scars of hard misuse. I"ve been using MY Parang Duku Chandong (8"&10") for several years and find them to be superior choppers and pretty good slicers. I have not seen you showcase these very useful tools. The 10" is my "one tool option". - Keep up the good work.

      No. The mountain lion attack happened right outside my hometown of fort Collins Colorado at a place called "horse tooth reservoir". The guy was hiking or running the horse tooth falls trail, and got attacked by a two year old cougar who had left it's mother a few months before. The guy was an acquaintance of mine before the attack. The guy literally killed the cougar with his pocket knife and fists. I hadn't seen him for about a year until one day he was all over Colorado news channels and Facebook.
      So... Maybe do some research?

    Hi David (and Seth),
    My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question:
    I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features:
    1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard")
    2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong)
    3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it...
    4) About 3" or more Blade Length
    5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly.
    6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip
    7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each.
    Thanks so much!

    For the mountain lion I would recommend either a good machete, or one of the longer, double edged Cold Steel push daggers, as it would be difficult to dislodge from your hand, and could do a lot of close quarters damage.

    The western style tanto is an altered form of the ninjato tip. Basically a straight, shorter, lighter katana. Even though the reality of anyone actually using one is as dubious as the Americanized concept of a ninja, there are replicas of supposed originals in Japanese museums.

      Is Flip Ricasso back in town?

    • @Dynotop1a
      @Dynotop1a 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are several other ways to close a Spyderco lockback with one hand.
      One of my preferred methods is to put your index finger in the Spydiehole, depress the lock with your thumb, move fingers out of the way, and then guide the blade closed with your index.
      That method never lets the blade swing free, so it’s safer, and also works best for backlocks without a ricasso. Though, it also might require repetition to get fast and comfortable.
      I’ve personally never had any issue with the “ricasso flip” cutting my finger whether I’m blindfolded, upside-down, or doing it behind my back, but I guess that just comes with practice.

    DCA, I'm curious to know why just a small portion (half inch of an 9 inch knife for hypothetical example) of a survival knife isn't serrated? I think it does provide a bit of sawing duties I have found out and also a bit easier to cut through rope/nets. I understand the straight edged blade is great for the continued slicing path, but even a small portion could help out significantly. Just curious since I was doing yard/tree work and had a bit of issues with stubborn hardened wood branches. Ty in advance!

    Revolvers malfunction, too.
    1. Master the tap/rack technique (I call it smack/rack because you do really want to give the mag a good, HARD smack since you’re pushing the rounds up into the bottom of the slide and the idea is to ensure a good seat… and it rhymes better)
    2. Probably carry a fixed blade, or consider something like an Endura with the Emerson wave and a signet ring for quick draw and secure hold. Consider the Benchmade SOCP dagger, Boker Spike Karambit, oh Cold Steel Karambit, maybe even just one of the CRKT Minimalist line or Cold Steel Mini-Tac, consider push daggers or the Ka-Bar TDI line, or you could opt for something a little more generally practical like an ESEE Izula, Bradford Guardian, Ka-Bar Forged Wrench Knife, Cold Steel SRK (or SRK-C),
    3. Most importantly, with whatever you get… practice, practice, practice. Like the great DCA and Thomas said: know your tools.

  • @Leftyotism

    22:42 Anything fixed and thick, preferably tanto for the way more stable tip and the full blade thickness through the sping to the very tip. Also the steel should be rather tough, so it might bend a little instead of snapping in half and rendering your knife not being a knife anymore.

      Maybe if the blade wasn't changed it would be at least part of the same bugout, but it sounds like literally everything except the axis lock was changed. So you didn't even need the bugout to build what you did lol.
      You could've just ordered everything and thrown it together. Sounds pretty sick though. Where/who did you get the blame from?

    I got a sog trident elite. The belt clip came loose after 3 days. The safety is in a terrible spot, I had to super glue it to keep it off since it would always get pushed on when carrying it, assuming it was just rubbing against my clothes and pushing it on. I don't have the Trident they showed, I believe it's a newer version. And I prefer the glass breaker on the end and not by the blade, and a separate blade for the seat belt cutter.

    Hi DCA, two part question. I’m looking at the ANV Z100 for my son due to the frame lock, washers and open back, as he’s going into construction. Is there another knife with this combination that you’d recommend over the Z100? Price ~$200. Part 2, my grand dad is turning 91 and is struggling to open his lock back edc. I’m looking at Spyderco for the thumb hole for him to pull at, with Pakkawood handles to fill out the grip, and specifically the Delica model so it isn’t so large in his pocket. I want to stay with lock back since that is his preference and it is safer for him in operation and closing. Is there another knife that has these criteria that may better suit senior users? Price, again ~$200 Thanks!

    I really like the idea of a gravity knife and understand they are illegal to carry in most places but not necessarily to own. The only decent quality one I can find is the reate exo, are there any other ones I should look at and why don't you guys sell them?

    • @Cadwallader38
      @Cadwallader38 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to determine what someone means by gravity knife because most laws determine that as any knife that can be opened with centrifugal force but any knife will open with centrifugal force.
      I personally would consider the paragon warlock a gravity knife but it's different than what most people imagine because instead of the blade sliding out of a hole in the handle the handle separates into two halves that house the blade and when you press the button they free the blade and it can swing into position. Also Balisongs are gravity knives absolutely. If you want a true gravity knife like the stereotype that scared Americans you'd be best off looking on eBay or military surplus for paratrooper knives because a decent amount of them were gravity knives although some had a very interesting and useful butterfly/pliers type opening system.

    Since you mentioned the SOG Trident being an assisted opening knife, I'd like to know why there is such knife snobbery against AO blades from the same people that have no problem with side opening autos. Aside from how they are actuuated, don't they function the same?

    • @andrewestrada250
      @andrewestrada250 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disregarding the Trident; Typically side opening autos utilize the same button to disengage the lock whereas assisted folders are usually a liner lock or frame locks. That’s why I personally dislike most assisted knives but don’t mind autos

    Hi DCA ,
    I’m not a fan of frame locks, mostly for aesthetic reasons. I know that this preference is cutting me off from a significant number of classic designs. Can you recommend a knife that will ease me into the frame lock world? On a similar note, I would give my right arm for a liner lock Pilar, if you can pull any strings :)

    • @tmutant
      @tmutant 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm with crd4146 on this. I have a couple of frame locks and don't like the aesthetics ( I did TRY, though). Also in cold weather, I'd rather have all the metal on the frame covered. So my list of cons for frame locks is 2. I don't like metal scales in cold weather at all. G-10, micarta, and FRN all the way for me.

      For the large Pilar, have a look at the GiantMouse Ace Biblio

      A bit depending on what makes you like the Pilar so much.

    I have had one particular knife in my pocket since I was 16. TheOtter Mercator Solingen K55 Black Cat Knife German, Stainless Steel, Army Issue - L154S. It not a very good knife but it just slips into you pant pocket. It is the size of a man's comb. Very slim overall. Just blade and thin stainless cover. Have you ever done a review of very slim knives? I'm looking to get something just as slim, but with a much better blade and lock, 3' to 3.5" no longer. Price, I'm not really worried about. Suggestion or review would be greatly appreciated.

    Having breached more than a few doors I don't like the "multi-tool" style of breachers. I would prefer a standard sledge with a fiberglass handle and a Halligan style pry bar. Those were my two gotos. If neither of those will get it done, you may need to need to pop the hinges with a shotgun. Failing that you're looking at something kinetic or explosives or some type of vehicle assist. I do like the flat top striking surface on the Gerber.

      I'm with you on disliking combination tools. The fire service is great at coming up with combo tools, that end up being poor versions of the 2 or 3 tools they were supposed to replace.

    • @John-tx1wk
      @John-tx1wk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CSSVirginia A Halligan or Kelly bar are not the tools for every job but when used for what they're made for, they're damn near perfect. Light weight and relatively cheap to replace if damaged. I preferred a 36" model and humped one a many a mile. The FNG always carried the sledge if we took one.

    I have a question for DCA (or Seth): I have an interest in getting some decent-quality old-school automatic switchblades (Italian stilettos and German lever-locks, or “shell-pullers”) but I’m not sure where to start. Perhaps between $75-150 would be my range.

    I recently cut my thumb while grasping a partially-opened Artisan Cutlery Proponent clipped inside the waistband. I was working in the yard and I'm guessing the combination of my "spare tire", the knife's large thumb studs and constantly bending down caused it to open a quarter-inch. I've always liked IWB carry, but now I'm paranoid about other folders partially opening that way. Have you heard of this happening? Other than tip-down, are there other ways to minimize that risk?

    Hey DCA I have a quick question... so I assume you're well aware at this point when a model of knife has a bunch of different colors and flavors to choose from, most of the time you see something like this... satin blade with different color micarta handles, and/or a black blade with different color G-10 handle options... but you don't often see black blade with any micarta options, I know there are some out there, sure, but you don't see it that much or as often as I would like, as someone that likes a blacked out knife and now care about handle options, ever since I discovered black dyemore... 😀 I can easily get black micarta... (and G-10 really)... the black blade is the problem... Is there a manufacturer reason for mostly satin blade finishes with micarta options, and black with G-10...??? Thanks

    Some of those questions were pretty funny. If you have a knife that will go through a door, I'm sure it will go through anyone trying to get you into 'said' room. So in the first place, don't let someone get you into a position like that.

  • @allrededc

    Hey DCA! I really like most of what Civivi has to offer, and I've almost pulled the trigger on several of their Damascus versions, but the vagueness of describing it simply as Damascus without any clue to its composition has given me pause. Can you walk us through a comparison of this Damascus, versus the steels that civivi normally uses, such as D2, Nitro-V, 14C28N, etc? I'm most concerned with corrosion resistance and edge retention. Thanks!

    Also just wanted to mention, regarding finger choils in some locations the finger choil can be measured as part of the blade, if it is being measured from tip to handle. So if there is a length restriction that is something to consider. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

    • @davidkiser5250
      @davidkiser5250 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I actually don't see other LEOs measuring pocket knives blades that often (it's usually "cut-and-dried" clear violations of concealed weapons) my state does have a standard based on old case law (4") that separates a non criminal pocket knife from a "concealed weapon", and yes I would absolutely measure overall blade length-and feel that the statute and prosecutors would agree.

    Hey Mr. Anderson, great videos and information. I was wondering what you would recommend for a duty knife for a fire fighter? I currently carry a Gerber Gator combo edge, it’s been a great knife with no issues, for the last 22 years. I’d like to upgrade, just to finish out my last 3 years of my career (knock on wood). I was on a much tighter budget back then, but my goal would be a knife around $50-$75. The gator was/is my choice because of the rubberized handle which is perfect in wet conditions and with structural fire fighting gloves on. Also, I can access the blade easily. Curious to see what you recommend, take care. Jeff J.

    Would it be practical to produce a chart that gave recommended sharpening angles for steel types and heat treatments? Certain steels must have optimum grind angles.

    • @LonestarTaoboy
      @LonestarTaoboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do think consideration would have to be given to the blade geometry. S35vn flat grind, vs 335vn hollow ground on same steel, would affect the angle of sharpening and overall appearance of the finished edge on both. I believe your suggestion is a good one considering steels with good toughness (Nitro V, 1428N, etc) are well suited for low angles edges, vs hard steels tendency to chip on low angles.
