They were the BIGGEST employer in my city growing up 96-2005. They literally employed THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS and if you graduated from school here, you either worked at Blackberry or you moved out of the entire region lol that's how powerful they were. Even with the Amount of engineers we have here, it is sad none of them have the capacity to start an enterprise like this. I truly love my life now but I miss those times, there was this thing in the air like you could be the next founder of another blackberry.
It's really crazy (and sad) how quick their fall from grace was - now driving out in that area of Waterloo just feels sad. I'll be interested to see if Waterloo/Waterloo Region is mentioned at all in the film
@@razberrycorvet21 I would say it was more of a painfully slow d3ath, they could've pivoted but they didn't want to get hip with what was painstakingly the future of the smartphone. I doubt they'll center much of the film around waterloo, but we'll see. Excited either way :)
The fall of Blackberry (I mean, RIM) was the best thing to happen to this area. A whole bunch of tech start-ups resulted from the crash, which created a bunch of new jobs and investment. The people who lost their jobs were the kind who could easily transition to being entrepreneurs or finding new and lucrative employment. KW is still very much, I would say even more, Silicon Valley North.
I know a guy who was laid off in 2013 and he got 14 months' severance, one for every year he'd worked there, so like at least $120,000. Dude owns two houses and hasn't sold one because he can't decide which one he wants to keep - but complains that he has 'no money'. While owning two houses. In Waterloo. Whatever dude.
He also explained to me a lot of the insane corporate culture, waste and inefficiency and of course above all hubris that led to Blackberry's downfall. Now Mike and Jim don't dare show their faces in the KW area after what they did. Lol!
Theres no incentive to start a tech company in this country. If anything you will be taxed to the moon. Thats why we all go to the USA.

Just watched this today, genuinely one of the best movies I’ve seen in ages. If this isn’t awards-worthy I don’t know what is. Everything from the acting, to the direction, to the editing, it’s all perfect. Absolutely want to watch again, and so much more than what I expected.

After seeing this movie, I can say Glenn Howerton was born to play Lex Luthor.
My first ever cellphone was a Blackberry, and by modern smartphone standards it was terrible. But at the time, man that thing was sweet. I worked at a Rogers call center at the time, and the Blackberry and iPhone fans were constantly arguing about who's device was superior lol. There was a weird period where BB tried to pivot and create their own version of a "smartphone", but it never caught on. I miss that little crunchy keyboard. RIP Blackberry 😢

My mom had a Blackberry in 2010, at the height of their “fame.” Flash forward two years later, she has an iPhone. I actually liked it.

when that went down you got a lot of phone calls..I did the same. But i can only think of two times they went down and one was the worldwide network problem. The upgrades killed me, at 8 PM waiting for the message counts to update on Thursday change day 3x a year or so

Smartphones are what they are today. Due to the blackberry being it’s foundation.
The BB era was just something else. No other phone will be able to compare on how the BB took over once upon a time.
Just got out of the theater and it was fantastic. More people need to see this!
This is going to be a huge movie, bigger than any Jonah Hill movie because it has the true underdogs in it: J and one of the most underrated actors of all time, Dennis from always sunny soon to be known to the world as Glenn Howerton
The thing is out of that whole cast of always sunny Glenn was the best actor right there with Danny Devito, he’s about to blow Charlie Day out of the water because drama is remembered more so than whimsical comedy

So cool when they flim in your city. Right next to my apartment, is the diamond district of antwerp Belgium and thwy were filming rough diamonds and other shows. Also, behind the bedrooms, they did some shots. Was fun filming them.
I worked as a subcontracter for BB providers.
They screwed up royally , Android and Iphone came up.. and they HAD the solution on a shelf.. all they had to do was port it to Android and Iphone

Blackberry Sandbox on Android and Iphone... instant safe. Barely any development investment required.. they had it all
but no, they ignored Android and Iphone for 2 years.. and then bought a company to manage them.. when they could have just dusted off Blackberry Connect

I thought it was a kind of an Ad for blackberry's comeback. But, when I looked at the channel name, "Ooops! Its a trailer in real".
I watch it today. It’s pretty good, I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the camerawork and chiptune soundtrack.
Also when ProDZ appeared on screen I was laughing so hard, that’s the last thing I was expecting. I wish he had a bigger role
