i really hated that they killed the older Gert just because it was the gert we saw in the first series. even if you replace it with an exact copy it is not the same and i feel like my favorite character was killed unceremoniously and replaced with an impostor. it actually makes me not care at all about the next issues.
Oml and i thought the same thing. They just killed off the main character for no reason. If they really wanted to keep kid gert just have her turn back into a kid when she goes back to fairyland or something.
If they really wanted her to be a kid again why not try and argue that upon re-entering fairyland she begins to slowly de-age back to what it was like when she was there originally. Would’ve probably lead to a few funny moments/jokes and wouldn’t, y’know, unceremoniously kill off the character we’ve followed the entire time
To me, I Hate Fairyland as a whole kinda represents the best and worst of Image Comics. When they're on fire with something, it's really good. But they put out so much stuff that a lot of it feels like junk filler and lazy slop.
they could have tried to keep both if they wanted that for brand, the kid Gertrude never stop being also her, honestly I had a feeling the story was going to be messy as hell when they reintroduce original adult gert as a loser (not saying she should be a winner but i feel it clearly was retconed she came back and grew normally, not came back as an adult suddenly) wanting back to fairyland but once there she just "remembers" that she hates fairyland and wanted out as soon as possible! like you could get a bunch of conflict if you made it so both Gerts are now linked so if one wants out, the other must follow, kid gert wants out, adult gert can tell her how awful real life is, specially if they DON'T retcon the coming back as a kid, and why us better to stay, she killed the ruler once, she can do it again and now live that fantasy! Kid gert thinks that now she knows her bad choices in irl she can chose better and not be a loser once back
Looks like the creator had vision and few ideas, which worked somehow for some time. But then he ran out of ideas and literally just added some fluff without content.
They fluffed the 2022 reboot pretty hard I do hope we can turn things around because losing the "main" character we read through sucks, I really love this series but I can't accept how disappointing this reboot/continuation has been.
I'm okay with Duncan aging under the premise that the Guest magic is the thing that delays aging, and it were to be pretty restricted to the Current Guest. If they're throwing around retcons around the same time-ish, I can roll with it. The comic aaaallllmost pulls off a big pile of retcon drops? Sometimes stories just need to do this, but I feel like they shoulda just done it all at once in a big, clunky lore dump and lampshaded it- switching Gertrudes, changing key and guest lore, having multiple witches, (though that's kinda an Oz reference and I'm here for it) etc. The spacing of these hiccups is such that it just hits every time you settle in to the new equilibrium, keeping it from claiming the sense of competence the series honestly is otherwise entitled to.

I was super excited for volume 2 when it came out, they continued with older Gert and it was awesome. Then they killed her and I have no clue why.
