Kayaking at High Water Level: Meuse from Linne to Roermond

  • The Meuse is a capricious rain-fed river that often has a much higher discharge in the fall and early spring than during the dry summer months. I started at the "Lus van Linne" in Linne and paddled over 10 kilometers along the Meuse to the Alexanderhaven in Roermond-North. The discharge was 820 m3/second, whereas during the drier summer months, it is only 30 m3/second. Just before the final destination, I also navigated the Roer from its mouth to the Steenen Brug.
During low water discharge, the Meuse between Linne and Roermond is unattractive for kayaking. The current is weak, and the river is heavily trafficked by pleasure boats. Right behind the Lus van Linne, a speedboat route begins, with speedboats traveling at high speeds over the Meuse.
In Linne, the Meuse is deeply cut into the landscape. The eastern bank forms a high steep edge, transitioning to the higher sandy grounds of the Linnerveld to the east.
Between Linne and Buggenum, commercial shipping uses the Lateraalkanaal because the Meuse is very winding in that section, significantly shortening the route by several kilometers.
