  • With October right around the corner, I figured it'd be a good time to take a look back at the forgotten failure that is the direct-to-video Addams Family Reunion (1998). This bizarre take on the franchise is even more bizarre than the Addams Family themselves.

Raul Julia + Anjelica Huston = one of the best screen couplings of _all time._
not in a kid's movie, not in a comedy movie - in _any_ movie. go ahead! do much better! you won't find many. i guarantee you won't find many more pairings more *instantly* likable, *absurdly* charismatic and genuinely, hilariously _moving_ in their flaming devotion to each other.
they are a _joy_ to watch together. anytime they see each other, magic happens in those two movies.

Both original movies were the definition of the Addams Family. Not a nuclear family, but a family that normal people, labeled as the outcasts just for explaining their feelings through wardrobe, sharing their thoughts, and knowing they have a dark side, could feel at home. It's a place where the unusual is common practice, creative destruction is encouraged, the shy are respected, and the eccentric are welcome. They're the Addams.

The key thing about the original Addams Family movies is that they came out at a time when they were trying to make big budget Hollywood movies based on old sitcoms. And where as other films failed trying to copy what the Brady Bunch movie did, that is self referential parodies made without the ironic nostalgic fondness for them, The Addams Family took things in a different direction. Sure, there was some inspiration drawn from the original series, but what they did with these movies was brilliant. They reinvented the characters without reinventing the wheel. They added a level of depth that you can't get with an episodic sitcom, all the while bulking up concepts and tweaking characters, interactions, and themes without completely throwing away what made the original sitcom and morbid New Yorker cartoons they were based on so special. They built the concept up, without tearing anything down, giving us something uniquely its own, while making a story for the characters that wasn't a 90 minute sitcom episode. Where THIS one failed was making the concept "family friendly" without knowing what "family friendly" meant, drawing too much from previous incarnations the wrong way where everything's a pale imitation, with ambitions of making it a franchise before making a product of quality. And the SAD thing is, while this was technically a pilot that was going to lead to a TV show, there's more thought, care, and better execution in said TV show than this movie ever had. Sure, it's not quite the original sitcom, but it does manage to have a fondness for the series, right down to it being a dream job for the actor that played Gomez (I forget his name). And that dream was even better when he got to work with John Astin who actually DID play his father (I think) in that series.

I remember going to the theater to see The Addams Family movie. I loved it, and the second movie too. It made me wish I was an Addams too because their family was so much fun, and they looked at life differently. I miss being a 90’s carefree kid when kids were allowed to be kids instead of a 2020 pandemic adult struggling to survive!

Thank you for this latest entry in the Forgotten Failures lineup, Joe. I had never heard of it before, and it's obvious why. I tried to watch "Clue" but even with the always-entertaining Tim Curry in a pivotal role, I still couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. So I don't think I could manage to sit through this Addams Family movie. Still, I like peeking at these embarrassments, which you watch so we don't have to. :-D

I was just gonna mention it till you basically teased it near the end talking about The New Addams Family TV show because the actress Nicole Fugere who played Wednesday Addams in Addams Family Reunion reprises her role in The New Addams Family which I thought was an interesting thing when I learned it. I actually enjoy The New Addams Family TV show I remember watching it when it was on TV on ABC Family back in the late 90s. I have since then come to learn a lot of the plots of the episodes are basically just modernized versions of the episodes from the 1960s series but I still enjoy them all the same.
I can't help talk about The New Addams Family TV show then the movie you made this video for just because for me the TV show is a lot more interesting then the movie was at least to me.

I'm willing to bet it's a lot more buried too.
I mean this "movie" may be obscure and never got a release outside VHS but I highly doubt those episodes are anywhere outside of TH-cam.
I mean it's been 20 years and they've gone through at least one name change of the channel since then.

I recently watched both original films, and one interesting thing that caught my eye is that it at least appears (I'm too lazy to check imdb) that the little girl they antagonize in the first movie when they get kicked out of their home is the same person who plays the girl they antagonize at camp during the sequel.

    Biggest Failure:
A "Reunion" without a single original cast member.
You should have had that before all the original stars was dead.
(of course that'd be kinda difficult since a few of them died in the 1960's while the original show was still being recorded.
When Morticia died the show was taken off the air.

He was 'well cast' if they were trying to make you think of Raul Julia. They have a similar look and delivery, so in that regard it was well cast. If they wanted someone completely different more like John Astin, I think Norm MacDonald has a lot of his mannerisms and dry sarcastic delivery.

I think that Tim Curry did a really good portrayal of Gomez, but he needed to have an actress that could play Morticia in a way that compliments both portrayals. Darryl Hannah as Morticia did not portray her character with the excellently nuanced performance as seen by Anjelica Huston (she is a favorite actress of mine).
