30 year ago and his playing then still wipes the floor with most of today’s players!!! Incredible to watch and witness. Vinnie is without doubt our most innovative player too date!!
This might be the sickest Vinnie Colaiuta Drum solo.on TH-cam... every phase of VC is great but the Yamaha days was my favourite.. Thanks for sharing!!
Even by Vinnie standards this is extraordinary. Kudos to the cat that shot this vid. Another gem display of the difference between memorizing some polyrhythmic phrases and fluently speaking in the language of polyrhythms. Oh and nice chops too haha!
Too many of todays players are easy to transcribe and decipher becuase all they play is lick after lick and they do the same on almost every video they do. Vinnie is a completely different drummer, he creates on the spot no generic ideas, he plays 50 solos and he will never repeat himself. A true one of a kind and one of the hardest dudes to transcribe
Has anybody noticed that the start tempo and the ending tempo are almost identical? 30 minutes of the most unbelievable technique and polymetric "stuff", and the tempo has barely budged. Vinnie's time is not metronomic, in fact in his very early days he used to rush and drag quite a bit, but his sense of pulse and flow is second to none.
@@trieck oh wow... I never knew that magazine even existed. I guess "Drums and Drumming" got absorbed into Modern Drummer back in the early 90's. Anyhow, that's funny he would say that but I don't doubt he really meant it. He must've felt like he went for stuff that just didn't land right but man he was absolutely on fire during this period!

This is the performance where Vinnie came off stage saying to Steve Smith, “Man, I just couldn’t make It happen tonight”
Vinnie is also comedian.

Awesome solo! Too bad it was recorded with a Fischer Price cassette player.
Agreed, lol. :D
It was recorded in 1990, what do you expect them to use?
