Absolute musical genius. No one has ever had the flow that weckl has. His playing is soooo dynamic, his fills come in as waves, not like "fills." He moves around the kit so smoothly, and he's even better now than back then in that respect. Loved watching him play ever since I bought Back to Basics in the mid 90s.
He took fusion drumming to the highest level then and now. To this day, though a lot of people wouldn't admit it, most fusion drummers want to be like Dave and try to play like Dave whether they are aware of it or not. He was definitely influenced by Steve , Peter and many that he looked up to when he was young, but man Dave blew them all away, with the exception of Buddy off course. There is no fusion drummer more exciting to watch. When you think of drumming perfection you think of Dave. Arguably the most musical drummer. It's hard to think of anyone better. There will always be Vinnie and Dennis for close comparison, but I doubt Dave will ever be surpassed.
For me, Dave Weckl is the GOAT of drumming. No other drummer I have ever heard achieved this level of fluidity and all-around proficiency and versatility with multiple genres of music. Dave has everything - speed, chops, groove, dynamics,...and he can does it all so effortlessly. The god of drums!
His musical vocabulary on the drums is second to none. Effortless riffing and ultra-smooth flow. If I could play like him, it would be like flying in a dream come true. Crazy-town drummer.
There is absolutely no discrepancy between a concept Dave can conjure and his physical faculties in being able to pull off anything his mind can conceive. He is a true Master. One of the greatest drummers to ever live. His feel and smooth playing style are unmatched.
Audio technology was at its peak in the 80s. The only reason why Dave sounded a little less great than today was because some one else was doing the audio mixing and not himself
You can hear a lot of Steve Gadd in Weckl playing if you listen closely. Back then . Great use of Dynamic overtones and Different groupings creates a great flow of great ideas. Thanks for posting this solo Presentation.
I remember auditioning with Spur of the Moment for college back in 1990. Had the chart and the Profs didn't know who Weckl was at the time. I showed up with the chart, backing track and a lot of nerves but I was accepted.😊
Spur of the moment and island magic.....classics. I remember getting the little black vinyl in a copy of MD back in the 80s... still have it somewhere 🤔
Right? But the album didn’t come out until a few years later. So interesting. Yeah, I’ve been listening to Dave since ‘86 when I heard “Got a Match’ on the radio.
What a video! Fantastic solo, really original. Name me as another drummer with as many recorded solos, with as much variation, technique and perfection as the Weckl library. Thought not. Numero uno.
@@doubts Dave Weckl's sound and his improv are what blows me away. Alot of drummers with sic chops ,but the way he makes the drums talk is second to none.
Y que tal lejos pero lejos detrás está Virgil Donati? Aunque sí, DW inventó la mayoría de los trucos que hay. Y sigue pateando traseros, con su cabello blanco 😉 Masterplan es un plan maestro de verdad, creo yo.

I prefer his passion and sound back here....but incredible always
weckl practically reinvented drumming during the 80's
Lmao, bullshit. He reinvented triggers!
Yes he did ! The Worlds greatest drummer at that time !!
THOSE SIX STROKE ROLLS ARE PHENOMENAL THE FINESSE TECHNIQUES

The sound of 80's Weckl is the sound of pure bliss.

God bless TH-cam. Anytime I need my fix from the mullet era of Dave, I find it right here. 🔥
So great. So lucky to have this footage so long later. Historical. Drummers will study Weckl for centuries.
Still loving watching this after all these years. Fantastic then, is still fantastic and will always be. Thanks Dave
The start of an amazing future ahead.
I love watching Weckl because he just digs himself so deep in the pocket and then spends 10 mins digging himself out again. So much fun to watch.

Musicians get better with time , Dave has always been better , he’s so smooth
Even in 86 his drums sound just as good as today. Even before all of the technology.

Gadd and à little bit of Erskine too..

man he's so good. love his drums too, especially the 8" rack tom
Of all the styles, Weckl's resonates the most with me. Love his triplets.
His drum tones tho...dang. Weckl was like the logical evolution of the style that Steve Gadd pioneered...#respect

Brilliant!
Really... that solo at 13:00 is incredible. So much taste and expression. Here at 26 years old showing why he is the GOAT 🐐

FANTASTIC!!!

Love the tom sound, K/Z hihats, and mullet!
The best of history
Beginning with Chick Corea Elektric Band "Side Walk"👍

He does more with his left hand than most guys do with both hands.

My favorite set up by far
Anyone remember that Spur of the Moment version where he is in a blue room? I saw that video here in TH-cam but now is nowhere to be found

Musicality! Mostly missing in today's new-er gen soloing world. Respect DW! ✌🏽🥁 I hear Jerry Marotta/Gabriel-esc at the onset; just my earring.
Only 26 at the time...
Anyone else got the Modern Drummer +1 on cassette and then went "excuse me?" when Sheryl Crow became famous?
and at 20:36 he even changes his shirt between fills ! 😮
He stores all his power in his mullet. Once that eagle starts flying better watch out
21:10 pretty cool scene overlap with clip of 86 Tokyo clinic
Sheer brilliance! Music alway's loud in the car while driving... Next came jelling along with Pat Metheny's music. Haha... superb!
I don't know what's smoother, his playing or that hair.
Super
He was using Vic Firth either the sd4 or the 5a 😊
